Voters in Freeport stepped up in the last election, and literally might have saved the city by approving Home Rule to continue. If it hadn't passed, they would have been forced to close one or more of the fire stations – and who knows how badly it might have impacted the Freeport Police Department.
However, there is also a consequence to having home rule – your City Council can increase your taxes without having to go to the voters for a referendum.
