The changeup has been an effective pitch in area softball. So much so, that most batters deliberately lay off of it when they see it coming. Not only does it throw off a hitter's timing, but it's coming in so slow that even when people do hit it, they end up with lazy fly balls on the infield, or a slow roller back to the pitcher. Most pitchers, however, struggle throwing a changeup for strikes. So the strategy is to let it go past, take the ball, and wait for something better to try and hit....
Once again, the Lena-Winslow/Stockton Pantherhawks were battling with Dakota for wrestling supremacy, but this year the Pantherhawks were looking to recapture the honor taken away in 2019 – and it wasn't going to be easy. Even with three forfeit victories at the lesser weights, with the heavyweights coming up that Dakota had a decided advantage in, the match was very much in doubt. Simon Rillie had pulled off a huge win by edging Maddux Blakely in a 6-4 overtime thriller, and while Case H...

The Lena-Winslow/Stockton Pantherhawks had been breezing through the competition as they awaited the annual showdown with Dakota. But if they really wanted to challenge themselves ... they needed to take on a tougher opponent – so last week they moved up a class to challenge both Freeport and DeKalb. And while Freeport is still building their program and was not much of a challenge, the DeKalb Barbs handed the Pantherhawks their first defeat of the season. Lena-Winslow 58.0 Freeport 6.0 285: J...
Cade Janecke has had your typical Spring sports season. Not only was he an all-conference football player for the Orangeville Broncos, and is currently a major stud on the Bronco baseball team, he was also playing hockey up in Wisconsin on the U18 Jets hockey team out of Janesville. So, for about three weeks, Cade was practicing and/or playing football, baseball and hockey all at the same time ... in addition to finishing his senior year at Orangeville High School. But all of that hard work has...
Baseball Aquin 16 AFC 6 Ty Stykel is a beast on the mound, but he's also amazing at the plate. Against the Raiders of AFC he went 3 for 4 with a triple and six RBIs in Aquin's blow out conference victory. Aiden Wolf also went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and three RBIs of his own as every single Aquin player recorded a hit in the game. Evan Broge got the win on the mound. He threw four innings and allowed one earned run on two hits while walking three and striking out three. Orangeville 9...

While the biggest news of the Spring is that both Baseball and Softball will actually get a post season tournament, a preview of what the Sectional finals might look like was put on display in Lena Tuesday afternoon as arguably the two best pitchers in the region battled it out in what can only be described as a gem. Ty Stykel of Aquin has been a stand out athlete for the Bulldogs in every sport, but in baseball he is their superstar – leading the pitching staff while also batting leadoff for t...

Baseball Eastland 13 AFC 3 Cougar batters started off slowly, but heated up in the third inning as they scored 5, 3 and 4 runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings to claim a ten-run rule win over AFC at home. Rogers, Henze and Burkholder loaded the bases in the third inning to set the table. Cropper drove one in with a sac fly, then the Baber twins blew the game open as they reached on an error and a walk – both eventually scoring themselves as Eastland plated five in the inning. With no disrespect intended to the Dakota Indians or Eastland Cougars, the undeniable power in softball has been the Orangeville Broncos for several years. They have won countless titles, and regionals, and the last time organized softball was being played under the eye of the IHSA, the Broncos were Sectional champs and only one game away from going to the State finals. So, with their starting pitcher, Tori Plowman coming back, along with the best softball player in the region in Tessa Janecke,...

Baseball Dakota 6 Lena-Winslow 5 The Panthers and Indians locked up in a back and forth scoring affair in Dakota. The Panthers tied it back up in the top of the fifth with two runs, only to see Dakota match that effort in the bottom of the fifth to go back on top by a 6-4 score. And while...

Monday night was the beginning of the final week of play for volleyball teams in the region, so that meant that not only were teams trying to fill up every single slot on their schedule, it also meant that the stronger teams were desperately trying to schedule matches against each other – and the battle between Durand and Eastland certainly qualified as a top tier battle. For the record, Eastland won the match in two games – 25-21, 25-22 – but both games were nip and tuck until the final few poi...
The Eastland Cougars had been hoping they would get one more chance at the Dakota Indians, while Dakota was finally back at full strength after having to sit through some Covid quarantines that left them missing three starters from the floor when they fell to Aquin. So both teams came into Tuesday nights battle in Dakota with something to prove. Dakota made it clear from the very beginning that they were going to make their case for being the best team in the region with a dominating 25-16, 25-1...
On Senior Night in Freeport, the Aquin Bulldogs took down the Lena-Winslow Panthers in straight games 25-19, 25-17 to close out an undefeated conference season. And while it doesn't happen very often, on this night, the game itself was not the lead story. Following the contest, Aquin head coach Korissa Blasing had a special meeting with her players and parents, where she had to deliver some very hard news – she was stepping down. "My fiancé got a really good job down in Morrison, and we mo...
