Three NUIC seniors have received all-state recognition by the Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association (IHSBCA). Matthew Riedl of Warren/Stockton, Ty Stykel of Freeport Aquin and Drew Burkholder of Eastland were named first team all-state in 1A by the IHSBCA. Riedl made the team as a catcher. He hit .460 with an on-base percentage of .590. He had 29 hits, including two home runs. He had 23 RBI and 12 stolen bases. Defensively, he threw out seven runners stealing and had only two...
It was an action packed and competitive season in which four teams – all in the same conference – ended up claiming the four respective Regional titles. We've never seen that before in any sport, but it also poses a major problem when it comes to an All Area team – a lot of talent needs to be recognized. The other problem we face is in respect to the sport itself – most teams place their best athletes at shortstop, or catcher – which makes for a ton of very strong players all going up against e...
Trying to put together an All Area team in baseball is never easy for a couple of reasons – the first one being, most schools place their best athletes at the same position – shortstop and/or catcher. And in the outfield, if we tried to keep positions in order, some exceptional athletes who played center field would not make it ... so we fudge the positions a little. The one advantage we do have, is that unlike softball, where one pitcher can throw every game for her team – you need a pitch...
With the pandemic shortened season behind us, everyone is looking forward to what we view as a 'normal' school year with conference races in every sport, and post season regionals and playoffs to get excited about. And while that is true for the NUIC, there have been many changes that a lot of fans may not know about. The biggest news, is that Fulton will be joining the NUIC in every sport and activity. With seven schools in both the North and West, Fulton will join the NUIC South – making t...

All conference selections took on a whole new dimension this year – especially in the NUIC North. The reason? For the third time in a row, the Orangeville Broncos had made it to the Class 1A Super Sectional, but for the first time in their history, they finally advanced on to the State final four with a strong 11-4 victory over the Williamsfield Cougars. In any contest, strange hops, mysterious drops and big plays can often turn the tide, and in the first inning things were not looking too good for the Broncos. Tessa Janecke led off with a smash to left field that seemed destined for the fence, but a...
When you think of playing softball, the one thing that almost never enters into anyone's mind is that it might be a game of attrition ... but Wednesday afternoon in the IHSA Class 1A third place game, the Broncos and Knights from Arthur Lovington/Atwood/Hammond ... ALAHA for short – was determined by who survived the onslaught of strange plays that knocked players out of the game. The Knights came in with a superstar on the mound in the form of Mackenzie Brown – a senior who had already acc...
I had heard some rumblings, but wasn’t quite sure what people were talking about, and with the team in the midst of the first run to state in program history, I didn’t pay much attention to it. But on the way home from the Softball state tournament in Peoria last week, I got behind a car that I thought at first was a Bronco supporter. But as I got closer, the name painted on the back window caught me off guard … “Go Brodogs!” it read. The longer I was behind it, the more irritated it made me,...

It had been a chant the Orangeville Broncos used throughout the post season as the goal was simple – for the third time, advance on to the Super Sectional. And while Pearl City made a huge hurdle to overcome, thanks to some key hits, taking advantage of a Wolf weakness, and keeping their composure when their coach couldn't, the goal was realized Thursday in Pearl City as Orangeville escaped with a 4-3 victory to claim the Sectional title for the third year in a row. The biggest hurdle to overcom...
Ever since the pitch count rule came into effect several years ago, the biggest factor that can determine the outcome of any High School baseball game is – who is on the mound. Every team tries to line up their "ace" for the bigger tests, while trying to use other pitchers on staff to get past what is seen as a weaker opponent. But in the post season ... there often aren't any weak opponents after the first round, so how the pitching staff stacks up makes a monumental impact. That was the c...
Fans had to wait a while longer than expected to see the Orangeville Lady Broncos take on Dakota in the Regional final at Orangeville last Tuesday. When the game opened, Dakota drew first blood as the Broncos seemed a bit off-kilter after Tabytha Toelke stole second base after knocking in the first run of the game. With the sun beating down, and several clouds in the sky, what began as a slight lightning delay turned into an hour long rain delay as the sky opened up and it poured down on the...
Warren/Stockton senior Matthew Riedl, and Orangeville's Cade Janecke have been friends for several years. With both of them being exceptional baseball players, they have played together and against each other throughout their lives in Summer Ball, and of course when playing for their respective school's teams. Once again, they squared off against each other as the Broncos and Warhawks met for the Regional championship last week in Warren. And after an error put the Warhawk leadoff hitter on base...
The Boys Track Sectionals were held last Friday in Winnebago, but unlike previous years where the IHSA had set cut off marks that determined whether or not an athlete qualified for State, the 2021 results did not include that in the posting. The point being, that there might be more area State qualifiers than what are listed here. All we could do was report the area conference athletes who finished in the top three in their respective events. Regardless of that, Forreston dominated the individual events, while Lena-Winslow’s 4x800 relay team a...
The true joy of being a local newspaper that covers area sports, is seeing athletes come in as wide-eyed freshman, and develop over the course of their four years into super star athletes. While many area kids fall into that category, Karlie Krogman of Eastland was one of those rare multi-sport stars who excelled at everything she did – a volleyball middle hitter who led her team in kills, a basketball post who has a state championship title under her belt, and this year she was able to be both...

The two youngest softball teams squared off in the first round at Lena's Dodds Park Wednesday evening as the SM/RR Hornets came to town to challenge the Panthers, but this one took longer than seven innings to decide. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Panthers had the bases loaded against Hornet ace Mikayla Bass, and freshman Kyah White was fouling off pitches to preserve the 2-2 count. "I thought when my team called time out and came out and talked to me, that settled me...
Drew Streckwald only threw four innings against South Beloit in the Lena-Winslow Panther's Regional opener, but he still got the complete game victory – allowing only two hits while striking out seven (including five of the last six batters he faced). It would have been nice to see him pitch longer, but the Panther offense wouldn't let that happen as Lena-Winslow blasted out 17 hits, while taking advantage of six Sobo errors as they spent more time running around the bases than covering them o...
Sydney Wright has always been a solid addition to every Pearl City team she has played on, but is typically not the "star". But that all changed Thursday in Pearl City. The Wolves were in a dogfight with Stockton/Warren as the Warhawks held a no-hitter through 3 and 2/3 innings, as Lauren Kehl was actually out-dueling Pearl City's Cheyenne Handsaker early on. In the top of the third inning, Elaina Martin stepped into the box against Handsaker, who had only given up a first inning single, and had...
