Coach Andrew Janecke has received a substantial grant to upgrade the Meridian Park baseball field from a local donor that requests to be anonymous. The entire old complex was removed: the backstop, chain link fence, storage shed, press box and both dugouts. Concrete pads were poured closer to home plate and the dugouts were stripped of their old siding and placed on the pads where metal siding will be added shortly. A permanent chain link was put up from the right field line to center field....
Stockton had been running cross country for several seasons, but this year was the first for their new co-op with Lena-Winslow. The Panthers had several boys from their track team looking to get involved in Cross Country, and as luck would have it – the Lena-Winslow Boys make up the entire roster of boys for the new co-op, while Stockton makes up the roster for the girls. Be that as it may, the team just claimed their first meet title by edging past West Carroll for first place of last W...

The Warren Warriors and Pearl City Wolves came into their non-conference battle on Monday in Pearl City with two very different goals in mind. For the Wolves, it was a trap game. After finishing fifth at the Oregon Tournament, they had arch rival Lena-Winslow coming on Thursday, so ... how do you get motivated to play a team you blew out on day one of the season? And for Warren, the Warriors – who are easily one of the youngest varsity teams anywhere – they were looking for improvement. In game...

Pearl City and Warren were locked in a back-and-forth match in game one of their non-conference battle to open the season. Serving errors by the Wolves, (5 in game one) were keeping the Warriors close, but Warren was also paying some exceptional defense. At one point, Warren setter, Averi Sabinson, went up for a kill, but the ball was blocked right back at her by Pearl City's super-soph, Danica Stager. But in one deft move that would have made the Sportscenter highlights, Sabinson, reached down...
Stockton was in complete control in game two of their non-conference match against Morrison, but the crowd was excited and chanting – for a very good reason. Entering the night's action, senior setter, Kacy Wright needed ten assists to reach the 1000 mark for her career. And with the Blackhawks in front 20-10 in game two, she was one set away. The pass came to her, and she put it up for Maddie Mammoser who blasted it down as the gym went wild and time out was called. Wright was presented with a...
In spite of all the summer leagues, conditioning and pre-season practices, every coach will tell you that you're never quite sure how the first match will go ... until you play it. Lena-Winslow opened their season at home against East Dubuque, but in game one – the Panthers did everything they could to give the game away. Service errors happen – especially when you're being aggressive. So, having one or two in a game – or even three – does not raise an eyebrow. A weaker team that is struggling w...
Lena-Winslow head coach, Ric Arand, summed up Friday night's opening contest at Morrison the best. "I told the guys, this was a battle of attrition," coach Arand explained. "Both teams had so many guys going down with cramps, and it was like which team is going to be able to put all eleven guys in the right spot." There was a lot of leg cramping due to a cool but heavy air, and as Arand pointed out – everyone might be in shape, but they are not yet in "game" shape. "We do a lot of sprints, a...

Bronco sophomore, Hayden Schofield was almost super-human Saturday against Alden-Hebron. He ran the ball for 170 yards and scored twice – including a 98 yard break away early in the second half – but he also had a kickoff return for a touchdown. The problem was, it wasn't enough. While Schofield did everything he could to carry the Broncos, but a collection of mistakes in almost every aspect of the game proved to be too much for Orangeville to overcome as Alden-Hebron claimed the 36-22 vic...
The Galena Pirates continue to be the team to beat in area volleyball. But even though they won their own tournament on Saturday, it seems the competition is close than many would think. Durand had fallen to Galena in the finals the last two years, but didn’t get that far on Saturday as they fell to Stockton in pool play. But the Bulldogs rebounded well, blowing out Annawan to make it into the consolation finals, then edged past Riverdale 27-25, 26-24 to claim the third place title. Stockton won their pool with an impressive 21-16, 21-17 win o...

Two contrasting styles hooked up in South Wayne last Friday night as the ground pounding Blackhawk/Warren Warriors played host to the air-it-out Southwestern/East Dubuque Warcats. And in a game that featured several huge plays and momentum swinging moments, in the end it was a last second Hail Mary that claimed the win for the Warcats. SW/ED came in with a lot of fire and emotion, and exploded right out of the gate as Zander Tierney took the opening kickoff, broke through a hole to his left,...

5 Golf teams – including some very big schools – all gathered in Rockford to officially begin the 2024 Fall Sports High School season at the Rockford Jefferson J-Hawk Invitational. The tournament used a two-person, best ball, format. In other words, both players would tee off, but then choose the better of those two shots, and continue this process throughout the tournament. Locally, Freeport competed, as did the NUIC teams from Pecatonica and Stockton. Final team results were: 1 Rockford Guilford 244 2 Rockford Harlem 245 3 Freeport 249 Bel...
A total of ten Boys teams and three Girls teams gathered at Lake Carroll's Golf Course last Saturday for the Eastland Invitational. Eastland also had three girls who competed individually, but you needed four scores to qualify as a team. But the best part of the tournament was that it was comprised almost exclusively of NUIC teams – with only Winnebago not being a part of the conference. So, that gave everyone an early glimpse into which teams might be competing for the conference title. W...

The first full week of the NFL pre-season is in the books, college teams are gearing up to begin their respective seasons in the newly arranged conferences where the NCAA has also expanded the playoff format to 12 teams instead of four, and at the High school level the Morrison Mustangs are now a part of the NUIC (replacing West Carroll who went to 8-man) which is only going to make the best small school conference in the state that much tougher. Here at Village Voices, we've already been...
This week is the IHSA's annual "No Contact" week where coaches and players are not allowed to work on their respective sports as they get ready for the first official day of practice which is this Monday, August 12th. But that allowed everyone to finish their summer schedules last week, and everyone made sure to take advantage of that. In football, Lena-Winslow made a trip to Byron where they scrimmaged against both the Tigers as well as the 5A Sycamore Spartans – and I was there to see them i...
