The first week of August was the official "No Contact" Week as required by the IHSA, and all over the region High School football and Volleyball teams officially began practice on Monday, August 8th. But the first competitions are not as far away as you might think. Local Golf teams will begin their season this weekend. The first competition will take place on Friday when the Stockton Blackhawks travel to Rockford to compete in the Jefferson Jayhawk Invite. But Saturday is even bigger as the...
After 14 years, an August tradition for runners in Freeport looked like it was on its last legs and would run off into the sunset. But some of the participants in past years said not so fast and volunteered to help keep the Colby Smith Memorial race literally running and keep it going. So, bright and early on Saturday, Aug. 27, the 4-mile race will begin as usual at 8 a.m. at St. Thomas Church and hundreds of people will get some exercise as they run across town to Aquin High School. The race...

Orangeville's Whitney Sullivan was a major factor in the Bronco's capturing the NUIC North Basketball Conference title last season, and apparently her size, speed and talents have not gone unnoticed. The Bronco junior was given a Division I basketball scholarship by the Wisconsin Badgers over the summer months. As reported on their website ... "Recruiting is the lifeblood of any major college athletics team, but following it closely as a fan can sometimes be difficult and can often be time...

Tyler's Justice Center for Children hosted its 2nd Annual Teeing Off for Tyler's golf outing on Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Woodbine Bend Golf Course. It was a beautiful day and we had a nice turnout and were able to raise nearly $11,000.00 for the Center between the participating golfers, numerous sponsors, and the money raised from our silent auction and raffles. We would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who participated in the event, made a donation or sponsored this event in any...

Collin Fosler, a senior at Scales Mound High School, competed in the High Jump Saturday June 4th in La Crosse for the Wisconsin State Track Meet. Out of 16 jumpers Collin won the WIAA D3 High Jump title with a jump of 6'4" and did it on his 18th birthday! (Not bad for a kid who is 6'2" tall) Many people did not know he was competing this year because he spent the majority of the season in physical therapy from an injury he got from the state basketball tournament. He was finally able to heal...
The Jim Shaw Classic All Star Basketball games were held at Eastland High School on Tuesday last week, and the very next day the first ever Volleyball All Star game was played at Eastland as well. And judging from the smiles witnessed both on and off the court ... both events were a big hit with the kids who participated ... which was the whole point. In the Jim Shaw Classic, the game worth watching was the Girls contest, where the South jumped out to a huge 29-8 halftime lead, only to see it...

Pearl City deserved better. The Lady Wolves didn't just fix their defensive problems, they perfected them. What had been the Achilles heel for the Wolves all season, was erased as they didn't just play strong defense – they played perfect defense for eleven innings – not making a single error in their Sectional semi-final against the Forreston Cardinals. Forreston, made five. The Wolves had more hits, had more baserunners, never walked a batter and – thanks to the excellent defense – never g...
The baseball season came to a bitter end for the Lena-Winslow Panthers in the Sectional semi-finals at the hands of a very strong Sterling Newman Comet squad. Jake Zeal threw an excellent game, and also added a monster solo homerun to make it a 3-2 ballgame going into the fifth inning. But the Achilles heal for the Panthers on this day was their battery – whether it was ruled a wild pitch, or a passed ball didn't matter. The point that did was that even though the Comets were only hitting s...
There is an old sports axiom that points out how hard it is to beat a team three times in the same season ... especially when they are good. But the Warren/Stockton Warhawks played the villain role to a "T" as they knocked off a formidable Fulton squad for the third time in the Sectional semi-finals to end their season in a 4-1 game that was dominated by Warhawk starter Caleb Mammoser. In the top of the first inning, Austin Chumbler smacked a single, stole second, then beat the throw home on a...
Coming into the Sectional Championship game, Warhawk head coach Jim Nielsen knew that the keys would be solid defense, and making sure they didn't leave too many runs on base. "We left a lot of runs on base against Fulton, and we can't afford to do that," Nielsen pointed out. More prophetic words were never spoken. The Warhawks had Newman on the ropes. After plating two runs in the first inning, they held a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded and only one out. Ian...

Girls from any of the nine school districts covered by Village Voices who made the All Conference team – whether 1st, 2nd or Honorable Mentio...

In the first inning of their Regional opener at home against Milledgeville, the Stockton/Warren Warhawks were, well ... not in sync. A soft floater over second fell for a hit, a shot to left was misjudged and went over the fielder's head, and those plays counted as hits! Add in the two errors, and the Warhawks were lucky to get out of the inning only down 2-0. "We were so flat in practice yesterday," said assistant coach Dean Zink, "the slow start had me scared we were going to lose." The Warhaw...
The Lena-Winslow Panthers will always remember their Regional semi-final game against Eastland as "One that Got Away", while the Cougars will forever think of it as "The Cougar Come Back." But no matter which team you rooted for nobody could argue that they witnessed one of the finest softball games of the year. The game turned against the Panthers very early as senior centerfielder, Kamryn Cain, smashed an RBI in the first inning to put the Panthers up 1-0. But she then tried to pull off a dela...
