Galena, Fulton and Lena-Winslow all swept through their respective NUIC conference divisions to claim the crown, but now come the Regionals – so where do we think they will stack up when they compete in the post season tournament? Glad you asked. Earlville Regional There are no local teams competing at Earlville, so do you really care? Newark is the top seed for a region, so expect them to win it and make the trip to Eastland for the Sectional. AFC Regional All of the first three matches will p...

The Pearl City Wolves haven’t been getting a lot of attention in the press lately, but don’t think for one minute everyone who follows area volleyball wasn’t noticing what was going on. First year coach, Tammy Stephen, was slowly but surely, making the Wolves believe. A team without a power hitter, and full of smart kids who were good athletes – but few pure volleyball players – wasn’t expected to compete in the powerful NUIC North. After all, the conference had three state ranked teams in it...
East Dubuque came into River Ridge Wednesday night looking like a M*A*S*H unit with three starters injured, and their best outside hitter done for the season. "Yeah, I brought three freshmen up, and we're trying to settle in on a new lineup, but we're focused on having fun the rest of the season," said head coach Ashley Sites. So, for all practical purposes, the match was one River Ridge needed to win comfortably. A back-and-forth see-saw affair would lead to more questions than answers. But...
The good news was that the Lena-Winslow Panthers continued to roll through the NUIC North with a straight set win over Orangeville on the road 25-14, 25-18. The bad news was sitting on a bleacher with an ice pack on her knee trying to fight back the tears. Mia Diffenderfer came down awkwardly early in game two and heard something pop in her knee. The normally stoic sophomore who would never show emotion whether she made a great play or a bad one, was suddenly fighting back tears – so you knew i...
With five wins needed to qualify for the IHSA post season party, Friday's conference battle in Stockton between the Blackhawks and Dakota Indians became a playoff for the playoffs as both teams came in with identical 3-4 overall records. The loser would be eliminated, while the winner stayed alive with one week left in which they had to claim their fifth win. Squaring off were two traditional running teams. And with Mother Nature put her two cents in as well as the rain was pelting everyone all...
Emma Norton, a native of Lanark, and graduate of Eastland High School, is a part of the 2023-24 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater golf team, which claimed the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title for the seventh consecutive season over the weekend. Norton is majoring in Management at UW-Whitewater. The Warhawks overcame a ten-stroke first round deficit to win the title by 18 strokes. Four UWW golfers claimed All-WIAC honors with their performance over the weekend. Head Coach...

There wasn't too much tension in the Orangeville gymnasium when AFC paid a non-conference visit to the Broncos. In fact, it was quite evident throughout the varsity match that a lot of people weren't really paying attention – or perhaps the nachos were extra good that day. Whatever the reason, in both contests, the scorekeepers missed a Bronco point – and while Orangeville was never in jeopardy of losing a game, let alone the match – it needs to be pointed out that they had to score 26 point...
Midway through game one of the Lena-Winslow Panther's conference battle at Pecatonica, the Indians had just made their third big stuff block to claim a 13-12 lead. But in spite of falling behind for the first time in the game, Panther head coach, Sue Amendt, never called a time out. "We were playing well," Amendt said. "They made some great blocks, but we were playing well. Besides, if I called a time out, they wouldn't listen to me anyway. They'd all be giggling over who belched, or something...
As the Lena-Winslow Panthers kicked off to open their homecoming game against the EPC Wildcatz, several things were immediately clear as being different than most Friday nights, but the outcome was very familiar as Le-Win remained undefeated with a 46-6 win. The most obvious thing was the Panthers jerseys for the game as they sported their pink alternative option per annual tradition of supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. While the jerseys certainly were a change, the athletes wearing those pink uniforms were not and the names...

RR/SM had a heart breaking finish at the Sherrard Boys Golf Sectional last week as they suffered the same fate as Stockton did in the Regional. The top three teams at the Sectional qualify for the State Tournament, and after all the numbers were in, RR/SM had shot a 333 as a team – a score that left them tied with Fulton for third place. But because of the tie breaker, Fulton advanced as a team, while RR/SM was forced to try and qualify their golfers individually. The top ten golfers who were n...

Lena-Winslow has a big front line. With Molly Amendt, Grace Groezinger and Eden Dietz, you've got three six footers (or close enough to it) right there. Add in the hops of Kaidynce Lynch, Alyssa Daughenbaugh and Mia Diffenderfer, and suddenly it's not easy finding holes against the Panther blockers. Durand found that out the hard way Tuesday night as the Panthers swept them 25-19, 25-17 to complete the first round of conference play undefeated at 6-0 in the NUIC North. The Bulldogs have...
Trouble hit the Aquin Bulldogs in the early minutes of their opening game on the road in Orangeville when middle hitter, Ava Theisen, went down in a lump after turning an ankle. Although it was a one point game at the time, the Bulldogs proceeded to fall apart in almost every phase of their game as hits went long, or into the net, passes suddenly went awry and sailing out of bounds, and even the region's top setter got called for a double hit – twice! The Bulldogs committed a whopping 15 unforce...
The Du/Pec Rivermen offense stepped out onto the field in their conference battle against Lena-Winslow in a shotgun spread formation – and stayed there all night. The Rivermen are known as a high octane offense, thanks in large part to star quarterback Cooper Hoffman. Yes, they would run the ball, but their main weapon was through the air – and they relied on it all night against Lena-Winslow. The Panthers meanwhile, have thrown a grand total of one pass all season, and that didn't change Fri...
The effort certainly was there and the game never got out of hand, but the five turnovers by the Stockton Blackhawks eventually doomed their chances Friday night as they fell short 22-8 against the Forreston Cardinals. The loss dampened homecoming night for the Blackhawks but they certainly could have been celebrating too if they had managed to hang on to the football in key situations. Moving the ball wasn't a problem as Tanner Gile and Karl Hubb both had good rushing nights, but every time in the first half the Blackhawks approached the...
