Readers may not be familiar with William H. Hills, but they should be. And last week efforts were made to honor the longtime Lena resident and World War II veteran who is currently residing at Oakley Courts in Freeport on his 97th birthday. Bill joined the Army back in 1942, and was originally a member of the Veterinary Corps working with dogs and mules, but was then transitioned to being a driver for the Colonel leading the setup of advanced Headquarter posts as the front advanced through the P...
On January 19, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) gave approval for adults age 65 and older to begin receiving the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as January 25. Due to the large number of eligible patients, scheduling will be done in phases. Monroe Clinic will begin vaccinating patients ages 75 and older as they are at a higher risk for serious complications and hospitalization due to COVID-19. As we proceed, we will add scheduling for our patients ages 65 and older, being mindful of...
Anybody trying to log on to the Village of Lena website recently would be seeing the same message ... "New Website Under Construction – Website development by the Stevens Company." A few cursory phone calls would also tell you that current Village Trustee – Cathy Stevens – is the primary contact overseeing the new site construction. With Cathy Stevens also being my wife ... the leap of logic that Village Voices, or somehow I personally, was involved in the new site construction would seem to ma...

Schools in our region have been hit with a nearly impossible task – to educate kids now in both a virtual and one-to-one environment at the same time, all while following strict guidelines concerning cleanliness and social distancing in order to keep those students (and themselves) safe. At the same time, the Districts themselves have been placed into a tough position as State funding has taken a major hit, and while property taxes are the primary source of local funding for schools, all but a...
State Representative Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) was sworn-in to his third term as 89th District State Representative during inauguration ceremonies in Springfield on Wednesday. While Representative Chesney was first sworn into office at the end of the 100th General Assembly, he says his first full term in the 101st General Assembly was both rewarding and challenging, and he expressed his gratitude to the citizens of the 89th District for the honor to serve. "Representing Northwest Illinois...
We know there are a ton of people who share in this sentiment, but 2020 will probably not be fondly remembered by many of us. Whether it was the pandemic, the ugly political scene nationally, or the hardships of cancellations and quarantine, everyone is anxious to turn the page and get closer to returning to normal. Be that as it may, our first issue of the year is always dedicated to looking back at what took place the previous year, so while we are certain you already know what the number one...
State Sen. Brian Stewart (R-Freeport) says he is standing shoulder to shoulder with local law enforcement officials who have expressed serious concerns about several provisions in a criminal justice reform proposal currently awaiting action by Illinois lawmakers. The 45th District Senator says he strongly opposes House Bill 163 because its provisions are a blatant attack on the law enforcement profession, and it leaves communities vulnerable to criminal acts and violence. “We should renew our commitment to the police officers who put their l...

At the Stephenson County Board meeting held via Zoom on December 16, an item on the agenda which had gotten a lot of area attention was the proposed annual increase in Fees to be imposed by the Board. The fees crossed the spectrum from Marriage licenses to other services, but the area of concern revolved around the service industry – specifically, the large increase scheduled to be imposed on restaurants and food service vendors. "I run a food service truck down in Dixon/Sterling, and the l...
You probably already knew that the idea of Santa Claus came from St. Nicholas, but the real saint wasn't a bearded man who wore a red suit. That all came much later. According to legend, the fourth-century Christian bishop gave away his abundant inheritance to help the needy and rescued women from servitude. His name was Sinter Klaas in Dutch, which later morphed into Santa Claus. The rest of the trappings followed. Before Coca-Cola got in on it, Santa used to look a lot less jolly - even...

Many people remember how back in October, the Stephenson County Nursing Center – DBA Walnut Acres – transported many of their residents to a Rockford facility in order to quarantine the wing of the facility in which Covid-19 had broken out. But now the fallout from that outbreak is beginning to take shape. On November 6, the Nursing Center received official notice from the Illinois Department of Public Health that a survey had been conducted into the matter, and showed that the facility "wa...

The story of the Rutherford Refuge begins with a gift. A gift of about 24 acres of land in rural Warren from a loving husband to his dear wife. John and Barbara Rutherford found an ad in the local newspaper in 1989 for a small tract of land along Clear Creek on East Twin Bridges Road. John, being the good husband that he was, promptly bought the land as a gift for Barbara. "My parents saw something here," said Darcy Renkens, John and Barbara's daughter. "I think they realized what a gem this...

No matter what your political views are, this past election was intense, but has finally come to an end – although I know you wouldn't know it from all of the signs still set up along the roads all over the region. But following the results, whether you believe in the fraud argument or not, to say that there are some hard feelings would be an understatement. It would be impossible for me to count how many times I've listened to someone – from both sides of the aisle – ranting over our curre...

By Pat Mahon McConnell American Legion The McConnell American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1225 decided in September that we needed to do a project for active military men and women and decided that putting together gift boxes was the best idea.
