Word spread quickly throughout the region that both the Dakota and Durand School Boards had voted to reject the Governor's mask requirement in schools and were going to make them optional. In fact, when word of the vote got out, many people were hoping, calling and trying to pressure their own districts into doing the same thing. Let me open by saying that nobody, and I do mean NOBODY, hates wearing a fricken mask more than I do. As an overweight asthmatic, breathing through any form of...

Resilience is something you choose,” said Ruby Johnson, a mother of seven children from New Lenox. “Our kids did not choose to be masked all day, unable to see their friends or teachers smile at them...

Two initiatives of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), carried by State Senator Brian Stewart (R-Freeport) during session earlier this year, have now been signed into law. Senate Bill 1878 will align the values of bowfin and paddlefish with sturgeon, as all three fish are roe-bearing species. The legislation increases their fair market value or replacement cost from $1 per pound to $4 per pound, which increases criminal penalties for illegal harvesting. “Paddlefish and bowfin are highly valued for their roe, just like s...
About a year ago, we did the story about how the Stephenson County Board was raising fees for liquor licenses to bars and restaurants throughout the county, and how the extreme increase caused a major reaction from owners of those establishments. Well, it would seem that the Finance Committee has yet to get the point that an increase is one thing, but an enormous increase in fees creates a wave of anger and resentment. As part of the study the County performed regarding fees, the latest one the...
On October 1st of this year, residents of Lena are going to see an increase in their water bill. At last week’s Board meeting the Village Board approved the measure unanimously. But the reasoning behind the increases make perfect sense. “Water rates have not changed in nearly a decade. Sewer rates have changed once in about the same amount of time. Inflation over this time has increased the costs of everything. Meanwhile the water/sewer infrastructure continues to get older and less rel...

State Sen. Brian Stewart (R-Freeport) is calling for a full audit of the Pritzker Administration’s mismanagement of Illinois’ unemployment benefits system, based on a scathing report released July 28 by the Illinois Auditor General. The Auditor General’s preliminary financial audit of the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES), and its failures with the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Program, covers only the first seven weeks of the multi-month program, but Stewart says its findings are stark. “It’s really hard to believe the mista...
