  • Board Delivers Hadley A Haymaker

    Dan Stevens|Oct 12, 2022

Working on a board, any board, is never easy. By definition, you look for people with opposing views to debate what are the best ways to proceed. But the only way progress is made, is through the leadership that guides it. Simply put, lack of leadership leads to a lack of results. That was never more evident than in the Stephenson County Board “Special Meeting that Wasn’t” on October 3rd. It is important to point out that a vote was taken at the regular meeting on September 22nd in regard to wh...

  • Explaining The SAFE-T Act Debate

Carl Larson, Stephenson County States Attorney|Oct 5, 2022

The Safe-T Act, if enacted, will have a number of impacts on the system of criminal justice within Illinois. Virtually all of them will reduce the ability of police, prosecutors and judges to meaningfully address crime. As McHenry County State's Attorney Patrick Kenneally wrote in a lawsuit challenging the Safe-T act filed September 19, 2022, " To many in law enforcement and many Illinoisans, the sudden and unexpected enactment of HB 3653 was a political ambush. An ambush orchestrated by a...

    Sep 28, 2022

River Ridge students were presented a bench as a result of three years of sorting, cleaning, and prepping bottle caps. In 2019, Francis Fennell of the Warren's Lions' Club said his organization had bottle caps and that they knew of a company, Green Tree Plastics, in Evansville, IN that would melt the plastics down into a bench. So, River Ridge Wildcats took on the challenge. Then COVID hit and the project went on hold. Once COVID eased up, the sorting, cleaning and prepping returned. On Sept....

  • Citizens Committee Forming

    Sep 28, 2022

A Citizens Committee is being formed to promote a Yes vote in the upcoming Lena-Winslow School District Referendum. The referendum will determine how school board members are chosen. A Yes vote would change from using congressional townships to at-large members. Some of the reasons to vote Yes are: - The use of congressional townships to determine who can serve on a School Board is an archaic system that was used when there were many schools, including one room schools, in a district. Those days are long gone. - The use of congressional...
