  • Someone Didn't Do Their Homework

    Dan Stevens|Oct 23, 2024

Last week, we reported on the proposed Track and football field project that the School Board of Lena-Winslow approved, and how they discovered a Village Water main lying underneath the current field. The School Board was told that there was no easement or agreement on record – after all the main was put in over 40 years ago – so the responsibility, and cost, to move the main would reside with the Village of Lena. So, the decision, as far as the School Board knew, was that the Village nee...

  • Yes, Your Highness

    Dan Stevens|Oct 23, 2024

The Freeport City Council has an odd tradition of letting Council Members “Chair” their monthly Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting, and last week it was Cecelia Stacy’s turn. Now, for a woman who takes a dramatic pause before each and every vote she makes, and desperately wants to feel important, this seemed like the perfect recipe for disaster. (And it was.) The biggest issue “debated” on the Council Floor during the COW, only illustrated the racism, and complete lack of comprehen...

  • Shut Up Sanders

    Dan Stevens|Oct 16, 2024

Larry Sanders reached a whole new level of imbecility at Monday’s Freeport City Council meeting – to the point where he got called out during public comments. But … odds are he still won’t realize how much he is hurting the Council as opposed to helping it. You knew it was going to be a bad evening when an ordinance came up to approve a lease with Pete Alber for the fourth year. Alber rents out the first floor of one of the buildings in the Rawleigh complex. And it was pointed out, “The floor is...

  • Sheets Pleads Guilty

    Oct 16, 2024

Former Dakota teacher and football coach, Daniel Sheets was back in court on October first where he pled guilty to the charges of Child Pornography of which he was facing nine counts for allegedly videotaping minors without their knowledge or permission. Apparently, the plea was a “blind” plea – which, as explained to us, means that no stipulation in terms of sentencing was agreed to. That means that the entire decision regarding sentencing now resides with Judge Schorsch, and could range anywhere between six and thirty years in prison. However...

    Oct 16, 2024

On September 4, at 10:38 am, Freeport Patrolman, Dan Moore, responded to a call for service at the Mary Hosmer Apartments regarding a female who was possibly being held against her will. Patrolman Moore was initially the only Officer on scene and made contact with the suspect male, who expressed to Patrolman Moore that he was experiencing a mental health crisis. Officer Moore remained calm while speaking with the male and was able to convince the male to open the door so he could check on the...

  • Avoid West Avenue

    Oct 16, 2024

Freeport City Road crews will be working on lead service line replacements for the next four weeks on West Avenue beginning October 14th, which will heavily delay traffic one block at a time along West Avenue (known by many as Hwy 26) from Galena Avenue down to Empire Street. Traffic will be reduced to one lane flagging as this work is carried out. Vehicles should seek alternate routes if possible. Work will begin each day at 6:00 am, and continue until 4:00 pm. Again, this will cause major traffic delays one block at a time with the work...

  • Arand Field Makeover

    Dan Stevens|Oct 16, 2024

The Lena-Winslow School District was facing an issue regarding their track. In a word, it was old. The asphalt was more than 30 years old, and has gotten to the point where there is no way they can resurface, or repair it. Bottom line, the track needs to be replaced. “We’ve known that the track was going to be an issue a long time ago,” said Superintendent Tom Chiles. “So, there’s been a committee looking into it for a few years now.” At the most recent School Board meeting, the committee’s...

  • Tough Decisions Coming

    Dan Stevens|Oct 9, 2024

Like a broken record, we had been hearing Stephenson County Board Chairman, Scott Helms, complain, scold and preach to the board with almost every single vote they approved, "How are you going to pay for it?" Now, admittedly, we figured he was just being overly-conservative, after all, he is a banker – and don't all bankers prefer to save money than spend it? But after hearing some rumblings circulating around the County Office building, we had a sit down with County Finance Director, A...

In recognition of his votes taken in the legislature that benefit manufacturers and the broader business community in Illinois, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) has been named a “Champion of Manufacturing” by the Illinois Manufacturing Association (IMA). “Illinois manufacturers appreciate Senator Chesney, who has a strong record of supporting policies vital to advancing the industry and growing our economy,” said IMA Vice President of Government Affairs Donovan Griffith. “We’re proud to count on Senator Chesney as a member of the manuf...

  • Power Of The Press?

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2024

The phone calls came in shortly after the Freeport City Council reversed course and voted to approve the Grant Application program in cooperation with Highland College and the Freeport Park District. “If you hadn’t posted that story, I don’t think anything would have changed. I had a lot of people telling me they called.” We posted our story – You Better Sit Down For This One – late Thursday night. By Sunday night, it had received over 750 hits on our website. But there was still no way of know...

  • Latest Telephone Scam

    Sep 25, 2024

The Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office would like to advise the public of a telephone scam occurring in Jo Daviess County. In this particular scam, the scammer will call and say that they are a law enforcement official and indicate that the individual has an outstanding warrant for their arrest. The scammer’s phone number may indicate that it is a local law enforcement phone number. The scammer will then attempt to convince the individual to send money for the warrant. The Sheriff’s Office urges the public to exercise extreme caution if they...

  • Early Voting Advantage

    Dan Stevens|Sep 25, 2024

We all got the little card in the mail from the County Clerk, and if you filled it out and mailed it back in, you probably already have your mail in ballot for the upcoming election in November. But even if you only glanced over it and threw it away, people can still begin to vote on September 26th down at the Stewart Center in Stephenson County. So, why are we running a story about this, and more to the point – why should you care? Glad you asked. The real campaign is about to go into high p...

  • You Better Sit Down For This One

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2024

There is a well-known axiom in politics ... "People get the government they deserve." The whole point behind the saying is that if voters don't pay any attention when casting their vote – or worse yet – don't bother to vote, then they should not be surprised when the government they put into office is completely inept. Just when you thought the "foolish four" of Freeport couldn't do anything else to harm their community, the witless wonders surpass your worst expectations. The State of Ill...

  • Setting The Record Straight

    Sep 18, 2024

Due to more misinformation being circulated surrounding the recent contract talks related to the Pretzel City Skills Enhancement Program, the City of Freeport wants to reiterate our commitment to continuing the development of skills for our underserved youth in our community for the Spring of 2025 and for the foreseeable future. In an effort to establish a program, the City moved forward with a pilot program this summer, brought forth by a collaboration of the Freeport Township and the City with the ultimate goal of training individuals who...

  • Prostate Cancer Fighter & Survivor Breakfast

    Sep 11, 2024

This September marks the 25th anniversary of recognizing National Prostate Awareness Month. Much has changed in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer these past 25 years but its incidence has not reduced. It remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers with more than a quarter million men diagnosed annually. Nearly 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime with a higher incidence in men with African American heritage or family history of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, there are relatively few...
