  • Lena Yard Of The Month

    Aug 16, 2023

There is no complicated science or detailed logic when it comes to flowers in the yard of Lynn Haight at 512 Quail Drive. She has the simple philosophy of "When I find something I like, I put it in!" The end result has produced a gorgeous setting which was chosen by the Lena Beautification Committee as July's Yard of the Month. Haight said that her love of flowers came from her mother who shared the same fondness. A flower box filled with geraniums at the front door has been the traditional...

  • What'cha Neighbors Up To?

    Aug 9, 2023

A local Mayor – okay, we’ll give him credit, it was new Lanark Mayor Mark Macomber – wondered if there was any way that local town governments we cover could submit simple – “what are we up to” notices that Village Voices would print. And, truth be told, we thought it was a great idea – so we emailed every community in our coverage area, and below is our first submission. Whenever any town mayor, or clerk, sends in information to us, we will include it as a regular item in the paper – kinda like Church News. It could be about a fund raiser lik...

  • County Putting Politics Over People

    Dan Stevens|Aug 9, 2023

It has been the center of controversy for years in Stephenson County, and has only gotten more contentious over time. But with the RFP proposal to potentially sell the Stephenson County Nursing Home, it is finally reaching a tipping point – but not the kind many people think. Before I begin, I need to express that I have no "skin" in the game. No relative of mine is a resident of Walnut Acres, and accusations made on social media of how the Voices has been "bought out and influenced" by the R...

The State of Illinois mandates pay increases for the State’s Attorney, Public Defender and the Sheriff – but the increases carry a reimbursement to the county from the state – so all of the mandated increases were approved. There is a massive difference between covering the Stephenson County Board and the Stockton Park District. While one strictly follows Roberts Rules of Order but spends countless hours arguing without any form of resolution, the other pays very little attention to Roberts, but actually got some things done at their July meeting. The biggest complaint in Stockton was that the heater on the pool was out. So, temperatures dropped at night to the point where people were swimming in 77 degree water te...
