Residents of the Gladewood subdivision along the Yellow Creek were seeing their main road continue to deteriorate, but when they went to the City of Freeport to see when the road was going to be redone as part of the expansive Freeport Road projects schedule that is expected to last for several years, the answer they got was one that nobody expected. “It’s not a Freeport City Street,” said City Manager Rob Boyer. “It’s a private street, so any and all repairs and maintenance are the responsib...
They’re trying. The Freeport City Council is making an honest attempt to make their meetings more productive, even though that attempt is being twisted by the mental minority as an attempt to “shut up” the voices they don’t want to hear, and stop members from, “asking questions”. The situation had gotten well beyond being out of control. The last two finance meetings were never held because Council members simply decided not to show up – even though the meetings are mandatory – leaving no quor...
Fatal Traffic Crash On 11/10/24 at approximately 11:40 pm, Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to the area of Illinois Route 26 North and Winneshiek Road in rural Freeport for a cellphone crash detection alert. Upon arrival, responding deputies discovered a scene involving a head-on collision between a semi-truck tractor/trailer and a 2005 Dodge Neon. The results of the preliminary investigation indicate that the 2005 Dodge Neon, driven by a 35 year old Freeport man, was traveling southbound on Illinois Route 26 in the n...

It would be hard to find anyone in the region who didn't know how big the Queen of Hearts raffle has gotten at the Little John's Tap in Pearl City. With jackpots over $200,000 it has often seen very large crowds just trying to get in to buy a ticket, let alone the massive size of the crowd when it comes time to do the drawing on Thursdays. But over the past week or so, the popular raffle has sparked a ton of anger and questions that led to a flood of phone calls for us to "look into" it, and at...
When I first heard about the proposal to put field turf on the Lena-Winslow football field, I thought it was a bit over-the-top. Then when I heard the 1.2 million dollar price tag – I was honestly getting ready to write all kinds of things blasting the idea. I mean, yes, Lena has the premier football program in all of 1A football, but does that merit a huge amount of tax dollars to put field turf on the field? I mean, should Lena-Winslow have a turf field when the Bears don't? But then I did m...
To the credit of Mayor Jodi Miller and the legal counsel for the City of Freeport, they tried to reign in the idiots. Attorney Roxanne Sosnowski opened the meeting by pointing out that according to their own ordinances, council members could only speak twice on a subject, and could only speak the second time after everyone who wanted to, had the opportunity to speak the first time. It was a rule that was already on the books, but had been overlooked … until now. And while the effort to reign i...

In recognition of his advocacy on behalf of the farming and agriculture community in Northwest Illinois, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) has received the “Friend of Agriculture” award from the Illinois Farm Bureau. Chesney received the award at a recent event at Shedd Farms in Rockton, with IL Farm Bureau District Two Director Brent Pollard, Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau Legislative Chair Kevin Shedd, and Winnebago-Boone Farm Bureau President John Mitchell presenting it. “It is an honor to receive this award from leaders of the Farm Bur...
It was supposed to be a Pre-trial hearing – where everyone would simply confirm that they were ready to proceed to the trial scheduled to begin on Monday, October 28th. That’s what it was supposed to be. “We’re asking to move the trial back your honor,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Thomas Madigan to Judge Schorsch. “In conversations with the attorney for the defendant, we learned that there is some discovery that they have not received yet.” “This is a two year old case, and we’re still h...
It may not have been a record, but after a more than three-hour Freeport City Council meeting that included a ton of the usual nonsense and idiocy, the overwhelming feeling when it was over, was an honest sense of accomplishment. The main issue, that brought a lot of people in for public comment, was the Open Bible Water Main debate. The Reader’s Digest Version, is that the Daycare Center at Open Bible was being forced by the Fire Marshall to attach their sprinkler system to City Water, so t...
Our Freeport Moose Lodge Board of Officers wanted to also do our part in helping North Carolina and Florida. Our board approved that we in Freeport offer our help to the hurricane victims of these states. It was decided that we will act as a donation coordinator so that even small donations can be collected and sent to help these states in their rebuilding efforts. To make it easy for everyone to donate to this cause, checks or cash can be dropped off to the Freeport Moose Lodge to our new address: 440 East Challenge St. Freeport, Il 61032....
Last week, we reported on the proposed Track and football field project that the School Board of Lena-Winslow approved, and how they discovered a Village Water main lying underneath the current field. The School Board was told that there was no easement or agreement on record – after all the main was put in over 40 years ago – so the responsibility, and cost, to move the main would reside with the Village of Lena. So, the decision, as far as the School Board knew, was that the Village nee...
The Freeport City Council has an odd tradition of letting Council Members “Chair” their monthly Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting, and last week it was Cecelia Stacy’s turn. Now, for a woman who takes a dramatic pause before each and every vote she makes, and desperately wants to feel important, this seemed like the perfect recipe for disaster. (And it was.) The biggest issue “debated” on the Council Floor during the COW, only illustrated the racism, and complete lack of comprehen...
Larry Sanders reached a whole new level of imbecility at Monday’s Freeport City Council meeting – to the point where he got called out during public comments. But … odds are he still won’t realize how much he is hurting the Council as opposed to helping it. You knew it was going to be a bad evening when an ordinance came up to approve a lease with Pete Alber for the fourth year. Alber rents out the first floor of one of the buildings in the Rawleigh complex. And it was pointed out, “The floor is...
Former Dakota teacher and football coach, Daniel Sheets was back in court on October first where he pled guilty to the charges of Child Pornography of which he was facing nine counts for allegedly videotaping minors without their knowledge or permission. Apparently, the plea was a “blind” plea – which, as explained to us, means that no stipulation in terms of sentencing was agreed to. That means that the entire decision regarding sentencing now resides with Judge Schorsch, and could range anywhere between six and thirty years in prison. However...

On September 4, at 10:38 am, Freeport Patrolman, Dan Moore, responded to a call for service at the Mary Hosmer Apartments regarding a female who was possibly being held against her will. Patrolman Moore was initially the only Officer on scene and made contact with the suspect male, who expressed to Patrolman Moore that he was experiencing a mental health crisis. Officer Moore remained calm while speaking with the male and was able to convince the male to open the door so he could check on the...
Freeport City Road crews will be working on lead service line replacements for the next four weeks on West Avenue beginning October 14th, which will heavily delay traffic one block at a time along West Avenue (known by many as Hwy 26) from Galena Avenue down to Empire Street. Traffic will be reduced to one lane flagging as this work is carried out. Vehicles should seek alternate routes if possible. Work will begin each day at 6:00 am, and continue until 4:00 pm. Again, this will cause major traffic delays one block at a time with the work...
The Lena-Winslow School District was facing an issue regarding their track. In a word, it was old. The asphalt was more than 30 years old, and has gotten to the point where there is no way they can resurface, or repair it. Bottom line, the track needs to be replaced. “We’ve known that the track was going to be an issue a long time ago,” said Superintendent Tom Chiles. “So, there’s been a committee looking into it for a few years now.” At the most recent School Board meeting, the committee’s...
Like a broken record, we had been hearing Stephenson County Board Chairman, Scott Helms, complain, scold and preach to the board with almost every single vote they approved, "How are you going to pay for it?" Now, admittedly, we figured he was just being overly-conservative, after all, he is a banker – and don't all bankers prefer to save money than spend it? But after hearing some rumblings circulating around the County Office building, we had a sit down with County Finance Director, A...
