At the Stephenson County Board meeting held via Zoom on December 16, an item on the agenda which had gotten a lot of area attention was the proposed annual increase in Fees to be imposed by the Board. The fees crossed the spectrum from Marriage licenses to other services, but the area of concern revolved around the service industry – specifically, the large increase scheduled to be imposed on restaurants and food service vendors. "I run a food service truck down in Dixon/Sterling, and the l...
I’ve searched every available outlet. I am without success anywhere to find a sensible reason to close our restaurants and bars. They have a ridiculously low infection rate for COVID. It’s 1.4 percent. For home gatherings it’s over 70 percent. Governor Pritzker assures us the science is being followed. Governor Cuomo of New York just ordered all New York dining facilities closed to indoor dining. They are facing a huge snowstorm forcing them to remove all of their outdoor canopies. As a small bu...
“Merry Christmas!” A couple were in a busy shopping center just before Christmas. The wife suddenly noticed that her husband was missing. Since they had a lot to do, she called his phone. "Where are you?” she asked. “You know we have lots to do." He replied, "Do you remember the jewelers we went to about 10 years ago, and you fell in love with that diamond necklace. I couldn't afford it at the time, and I said that one day I would get it for you?" Little tears started to well up in her eyes and...
One of the hardest things to do – at least in my household – is keeping a secret in terms of what gift people are getting. I mean, with two teenage girls growing up, they had certain “wants” that I felt compelled to fulfill, but also needed to convince them that I wasn’t. Let me explain. Years back, when the girls were both still living under our roof, all three women in the house made it very clear that they wanted brand new iphones. (And yours truly was resisting with all my might.) But on th...

Dear Santa; I'm writing to let you know that I've been naughty this year, and it was worth it. Dear Santa; I have been very good for the last week or so. Let's focus on that. Dear Santa; Can we bring back the year when clowns tried to kill us all? I liked that one better than this Covid stuff. Dear Santa; Please text my dad. He has my whole list. Dear Santa; If you want to grab a beer, feel free to get the lot, or just one. The fridge is near the back door. Dear Santa; How are you? Well, enough chit chat. Let's get down to business. This year...
Now that the first snow of the season has arrived, the Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) invites the public to it's Valley of Eden Bird Sanctuary for cross-country skiing on several miles of groomed trails for both traditional cross-country skis as well as snowshoes. New this year are directional signs along the trails and a sledding hill near the viewing platform that is just up from the welcome kiosk. There are few places to go cross-country skiing in Jo Daviess County and we thank...
You probably already knew that the idea of Santa Claus came from St. Nicholas, but the real saint wasn't a bearded man who wore a red suit. That all came much later. According to legend, the fourth-century Christian bishop gave away his abundant inheritance to help the needy and rescued women from servitude. His name was Sinter Klaas in Dutch, which later morphed into Santa Claus. The rest of the trappings followed. Before Coca-Cola got in on it, Santa used to look a lot less jolly - even...
