When the boxing match – disguised as a basketball game – was sent to the judges for scoring, the split decision came out in favor of the Eastland Cougars by a 41-39 margin. Physical basketball is expected during the post season when referees don't want to be the ones to determine an outcome, but the tag team body checking mauling that took place in Lanark Wednesday night was almost to the point of being ridiculous. And this came at the hands of a solid group of referees – not some rookie know-...
When the Lena-Winslow Lady Panthers stepped out onto the floor to challenge the Wildcats from RR/SM, the first thing anybody took notice of were the shoes. "I've tried to do team shoes before and it turned into a nightmare," admitted head coach Dennis Huttenlocher. "Sure, it might look cool if we were all in a white shoe, but my policy right now is you have to have shoes on your feet to play. What shoe you get is totally up to them." There were the neon green, the purple and yellow bursts, some...
While sports fans may be filing into area gymnasiums to see the region's athletes handle the leather, speech kids are getting up at the crack of dawn Saturday morning to kick off their season at the Stockton Pow Wow held Saturday in Stockton. Eight teams competed in the opening tournament of the speech season, and while it is very early and a lot will change between now and when the Regionals arrive in February, the Stockton/Warren Warhawks opened up out of the gate in impressive fashion. Teams...
The Panthers claimed their fourth State Championship, the Blackhawk/Warren Warriors claimed the 7A Title in Wisconsin, Polo won the 8-Man Football state crown, and we don’t even cover Sterling Newman or Byron but everyone knows what they did this season. The point being, Northwest Illinois is easily the center of the small school football universe in Illinois. So how do you possibly name an All Area Team? Rather than wimp out on the task, we have altered it – slightly – and present to you our s...
When you think about international politics and trade, the last person that might come to mind would be someone in our own backyard. But Thursday afternoon at the Kolb/Lena Cheese plant, Lena Village President, Dennis Bergman, received a very prestigious award from the French Government – the Order of Agricultural Merit. Dominique Huth, President and CEO of Savencia Cheese – the company that owns the Kolb/Lena plant – welcomed everyone with a short background about the company itself, and how t...

Ready or not, Christmas is upon us. It came fast this year. I have a friend who vacations in Jamaica at Christmas time. One year he told the Jamaicans it was 20 below back in Wisconsin. Their reply: “Below what?” Speaking of cold - Last Sunday we had five people get baptized at our church. I had filled the baptism tank the night before and turned the heater on “high”. The next morning when I arrived at church, the water was a little on the warm side so I turned the heater off expecting it to c...
Watchdog group Truth in Accounting has issued a report that ranks Illinois among the least fiscally-transparent states in the nation. Illinois has been ranked ninth-worst, with the state’s score negatively affected by such factors as the late delivery of its annual documents, a failure to have an external auditor look at the numbers, and a distorted net financial position due to misleading and confusing information on its report. The Truth in Accounting group measures each state’s Com...
For many of the athletes, football had just ended, so they sat out the first wrestling meet as the Pantherhawks swept past Stillman Valley 44-18. In order to better convey the scoring breakdown as it takes place, and thanks to the new statistics system the Pantherhawks are using, we will be revealing the scores in the order of the matches as they were wrestled. A typical wrestling meet "draws" the opening weight, and then it progresses in order through them. Against Stillman, the weight drawn...

Illinois Democrats had a moment during the final week of legislative session in 2019. Some might say a rare moment; others may say a moment they can choose to take at any time. Federal investigations are swirling about multiple Democrat leaders in Chicago City Hall, the Illinois House, and the Illinois Senate. Democrats had a moment to step back, fix the immediate problems, work on the long-range problems, and attempt to persuade the public they are worthy of their continued trust running all...

Both the Stockton Blackhawks and Eastland Cougars got their Boys Basketball season tipped off in non-conference action against each other at Stockton last Monday night. And while there are some strong reasons to be optimistic for both teams, it was the quick hands of Eastland that led to ten transition layups in the Cougar's 55-40 victory. "We didn't take care of the ball," said Stockton head coach John Hammann. "We talked about being patient on offense, but when Henze hit the early shots agains...
