  • Finished!

    Dan Stevens|Dec 1, 2021

Early on the season the Lena-Winslow Panthers were winning easily over the Dakota Indians, but head coach Ric Arand was not a happy camper, and he ripped into them on the radio at halftime with his point of emphasis ... "We're not finishing runs." It's an upper level concept in football, and one that helps to set the Panthers apart. To Finish a run, means that you don't simply go down after being hit – you continue to push forward, and fight to gain as much yardage as possible. And it's not j...

  • The Lighter Side

    Dec 1, 2021

I'm ready to start my Christmas shopping ... OK, who's got some money I can use? All I want for Christmas is a free refill of my wallet when I'm done shopping. I spend a lot of money Christmas shopping ... most of it on myself. I almost dropped BEFORE I shopped ... yep, I had to park two miles away from the mall. With all of the pushing and shoving to get this year's door busters, they should call it Black and Blue Friday. I always hang mistletoe in the same spot – the middle belt loop on the back of my jeans. I really hope you like the p...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Dec 1, 2021

The holiday season is quickly approaching. And while that always brings out holiday decorations, Christmas Carols, lots of goodies, and trips to see relatives. The one thing it also tends to bring out are ... movies! Some of the best movies ever made were released over the holidays, and this year I for one am already looking forward to the King Richard movie – the one about Serena and Venus Williams - while my wife and daughters have been talking about the Gucci movie. Neither one of us wants t...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Dec 1, 2021

Silence is golden, unless you have kids, then silence is just really suspicious. Well, we made it through Thanksgiving which means all the pumpkins in front of the house can finally be disposed of. It’s always fun to go out to the pumpkin patch and pick them early in the fall, and then decorate by placing them in strategic places around the homestead, but now it’s time for them to go. We have Christmas decorations to set up. The day before yesterday I got the lawn mower out for the last tim...

  • Roby's Ring Season

    Dan Stevens|Dec 1, 2021

While the television announcers were gushing over the exploits of Marey Roby during the Panther's State Championship victory, what couldn't be overlooked was the incredible road Marey had to take in order to once again be on the field – let alone making such big runs for the Panthers. As many remember, in the first game of the Spring season down at Princeton, Marey caught a screen pass with the score tied at 14-14 in the second quarter against Princeton, when he was hit low and awkwardly. The h...

  • One Man's Opinion

    Jim Sacia|Dec 1, 2021

Growing up on a 32 -cow dairy farm in Wisconsin, one of 10 children, working hard was a given. We all pitched in. We all did our part. I could not have been blessed with greater parents. There never was excess but they saw to it that there was always enough. We learned early on to make do with what we had. Along the line, I developed a strong work ethic. Reflecting, I'm sure it was seeking parental approval. Nothing made me prouder than being complimented for "a job well done." In our little...

  • Your Voices

    Dec 1, 2021

Dan, When people have power, they will use it one way or another and not always in the best way. Recently the Athletic Directors from the seven schools in the NUIC who have a wrestling program voted whether to allow Aquin to co-op with Dakota and Orangeville for wrestling. Aquin has one student who would like to participate in a high school wrestling program. Wrestling is not available at Aquin. Dakota, Orangeville and Aquin had agreed they could work together as a co-op and the proposal was brought before the group of seven Athletic Directors...

  • An Illinois Pioneer

    John Day|Dec 1, 2021

Built in 1870, the Wesley United Methodist Church in Stockton is a classic example of nineteenth century architecture. It rests on a pleasant lawn and is landscaped with hedges, plants, flowers, and bushes. It is a brilliant white. The roof is peeked and at the front of the structure is a bell tower with a tall steeple that has a cross upon its top. Inside there is a choir loft, oak pews, and a modest pulpit. Tall stained-glass windows line the walls. It is in the glass in one of the windows...
