  • Turkey Tip Off Opens Boys Season

    Dan Stevens|Nov 30, 2022

The Boys' Basketball season officially got underway in Scales Mound on Monday as the Hornets played host to their first Tip-Off Tourney. The opening contest was a back and forth battle between Galena and East Dubuque that was a lot of fun to watch. Pirate junior, Connor Glasgow led all players with a 26 point night, but it wasn't enough as new Warrior head coach, Scott Schaber, lost his voice – but not the game as the Warriors held off a late Pirate rally to claim the 65-61 victory. With 31 s...

  • Too Big And Too Many

    Dan Stevens|Nov 30, 2022

The Aquin Lady Bulldogs and River Ridge/Scales Mound Lady Wildcats squared off at the Dakota Turkey Tournament Tuesday night in a battle of unbeatens, but it was the Wildcats who ran away with a dominant 67-44 victory. The Wildcats jumped out to the early 8-2 lead as Aquin simply had no answer for Sydney Driscoll in the middle. The senior post was getting fed the ball, and even with defenders hanging on her, would muscle up the inside shot. But when the Wildcats subbed Driscoll out as part of a...

  • Dynasty

    Dan Stevens|Nov 30, 2022

With their sixth state championship in 12 years, and third title in a row, it became official on Friday – the Lena-Winslow Panther football team has become a dynasty. "Most people around here have no idea where Lena-Winslow is," said University of Illinois Executive Senior Associate Director of Athletics, Development, Howard Milton. "We just refer to Lena-Winslow as the Alabama of small school football." The Panthers proved that point once again as they methodically pounded the ball down the fie...

  • The Alabama Of 1A?

    Dan Stevens|Nov 30, 2022

I was born in Champaign, Illinois. My mother taught at the U of I while I was young. For five generations every member of my family got their degree from the U of I, and both of my parents are burried in the cemetery across the street from Memorial Stadium - behind where the Panther fans were sitting for the state title game. The point being, I have a lot of connections there, and look forward to seeing old friends and family members whenever I come down - even if it is a "working trip." But I...

  • Preachers Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Nov 30, 2022

With the rise of self-driving vehicles, it's only a matter of time before we get a country song where a guy's truck leaves him too. As I write this, my wife and I are in southwest Florida where Hurricane Ian struck in late September. They say it was the worst hurricane in Florida’s history. I guess I wouldn’t argue that much, except, how do they know? The earth has been around for some 6000 years and the indigenous people who lived here before us, didn’t have ways to track the storms like we do...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Nov 30, 2022

What’s your favorite cookie? The typical answer is chocolate chip, and I love my wife’s chocolate chip cookies – especially when fresh and warm out of the oven when the chocolate is a bit on the melty side. But man does not live by chocolate chip alone. We are about to hit the holiday baking season, and the thought of your standard Christmas sugar cookie covered with icing and sprinkles as decoration will certainly be high on the list. But I think we’ve been spoiled. If you haven’t gotten a...

  • Lighter Side

    Nov 30, 2022

All I want for Christmas is a free refill … of my wallet when I am done shopping. I got my Christmas shopping done early this year. When you don’t buy anybody anything, it goes pretty fast. Believe it or not, some people are already done with their holiday shopping … I hate those people. With all of the pushing and shoving to grab this year’s door busters, they ought to call it “Black & Blue Friday.” It’s been a rough week holiday shopping. But on a positive note, I didn’t need any bail money and didn’t need to hide any bodies yet. I’m r...

  • Honoring Bing

    Nov 30, 2022

Bing has pretty much seen it all in his time as the voice of the panthers. From some of the not so great years of the football program, to the happier moments like state championship football teams and state tournament bound basketball teams, Bing has been there. Bing...
