The Eastland Cougars and Lena-Winslow Panthers opened up the Girls' Basketball season Monday night with a non-conference battle that was ... well ... typical of an opening game. For the Cougars, they are sporting a lineup of six varsity players, supported by some strong JV talent for depth. And while they were strong in the paint when senior Olivia Klinefelter was on the floor, when she wasn't ... it was a bit of a free-for-all on the boards. "Don't pick on me Dan, I'm not in basketball shape ye...
The Warren Warriors originally told people they were only planning on playing a JV girls basketball schedule. And while that changed as more freshmen came out than anticipated, the Warriors still send out a varsity squad with zero seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and six freshmen making up the roster. So, when the Warriors had to take on the powerful Galena Pirates Wednesday night at the Warren Turkey Tournament ... a blow-out was expected. But nobody told Warren's Lizzy Hartzell that. The...
The LeRoy Panthers offense was averaging over 400 yards rushing a game. Averaging! So confident in their offense were they that when they won the coin toss, they did the unorthodox – they wanted the ball right away. (Normally teams defer in order to get the second half kickoff and have a chance at back-to-back scores – but more on that later) "Yeah, it surprised me when they wanted the ball," said Lena-Winslow head coach Ric Arand. "That made the first possession really important." Three times t...

Dear Mr. Stevens I agree with you about the importance of local newspapers. I read Dan Rather’s book WHAT UNITES US. He is right that a local newspaper keeps a community together. Social media separates people into little cliques. Who else keeps people informed about local government and events? You do a good job of that. I hope you find someone to carry the torch before you retire. Merry Blake...
The Slurp & Burp in Loran had to appear before the Stephenson County Liquor Commission last week for a hearing regarding possible violations. From the outset, it was apparent that the establishment was in trouble as their attorney, Anthony Coon, opened up his argument by saying, "The licensee comes before you today with open arms. We know there will be consequences, but we're looking to cooperate and prevent any future violations." The hearing was in the form of a court trial. With the three...

The story goes how one Sunday morning as a husband and wife were getting ready for church, the husband decided he didn’t want to go after all. But his wife was very adamant about him going. After several unsuccessful attempts to convince him he needed to get ready, she finally said, “Listen, I can give you two good reasons why you should go to church today. One, it is Sunday, that means it’s the Lord’s Day, and God wants you in church. And, two, there’s going to be a lot of disappointed people i...
OK, I am not – or have not – considered myself to be an idiot when it comes to technology. I know all of the ins and outs of several programs I use all the time like Photoshop, InDesign, and even Quickbooks. But, as I recently discovered, when it comes to iphones and the inner workings of several online platforms … I’m officially a moron. My first clue came the other day when my wife handed me a sign that said “Free”. “Here, hold this up, I want to take a picture for Facebook Marketplace,...

All I want for Christmas is a free refill … of my wallet when I am done shopping. I got my Christmas shopping done early this year. When you don’t buy anybody anything, it goes pretty fast. Believe it or not, some people are already done with their holiday shopping … I hate those people. With all of the pushing and shoving to grab this year’s door busters, they ought to call it “Black & Blue Friday.” It’s been a rough week holiday shopping. But on a positive note, I didn’t need any bail money and didn’t need to hide any bodies yet. I’m r...
Following an incredibly successful IPASS on Demand event in Rockton earlier this month, State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) is bringing a mobile team from the Illinois Tollway to Freeport for an IPASS event on December 2. "The Tollway is transitioning away from plastic transponders and are replacing them with new sticker technology," said Chesney. "Rather than having my constituents complete this transaction at the DMV or elsewhere where there may be a fee, I am bringing a mobile team...
One word sums up this week and that word is “thankful”. I am blessed with many things to be grateful for this week. On Monday, November 19, the Stephenson County Farm Bureau hosted our 2024 annual meeting. We reminisced on a successful year and highlighted many exciting activities for this upcoming year. We also thanked our retiring board member, Dan Scheider. Dan has served Stephenson County Farm Bureau for over 10 years and has recently served as our Vice President. A big thank you goes out...
The Le-Win Music Boosters' inaugural Christmas Variety Showcase was such a smashing success in 2023, those musical Panthers are returning to the Panther Den stage on Dec. 15 to serve up a fresh helping of holiday cheer! The student-led showcase directly funds their music trip, which has been a source of precious memories for generations of Le-Win band and choir students. Last winter's event helped offset the cost of the students' 2024 Orlando trip by raising $4,500 with 100% of proceeds...
