Typically, the first game of a basketball season can be pretty ugly, even when the two teams are traditional powers like Lena-Winslow and Eastland. But Monday night in Lena, while there were some stretches where nobody seemed capable of scoring, the defense and execution turned what looked like a double digit win into a last second nail biter. Eastland came out on top early on the strength of their man press, and because they were simply driving past Panther defenders to the basket. Jenna...
Dan; Loved your article about does crime pay. If you want to find some good examples of what their policies are doing, look up Jackie Smith and Abe Haas on judici.com. Then do the same for Wisconsin. Gun charges, abduction, drug charges dismissed. Repeat offenders let walk with zero days in jail for multiple felonies. Ignoring documents from other states and ignoring dcfs. They were rewarded for ignoring their court dates multiple times, then showing up and having red handed charges dismissed. Many caught on video or admitted to. Appreciate...
The Stephenson County Board held their regular meeting last Wednesday, which was really a pre-curser for the main meeting which will take place on November 30th when the 2024 budget must be passed. So, while the normal routine is to keep things tight to the vest in terms of items on the budget they want to cut, trim or change until the meeting on the 30th. Because on the 30th, the looming deadline will force them to pass a budget, so that doesn’t give any opposition, to any position, any time to...

“The Spice of Life” This Thanksgiving, along with so much, I am thankful for the extra characters God has brought into my life and blessed me with. Everyone has a story to tell. I could tell you her name, but that might give it away. Several years ago her daughter and son-in-law came to me for marriage counseling. I gave them the best advice I could at the time and sent them on their way along with a homework assignment. The daughter went home and told her mom what my advice was (which by now...
“Hey good column this week Dan.” I was with my wife picking up her car at Chris Brinker’s Pit Stop where she had taken it in for some routine maintenance when Chris, the owner, came into the office and made the comment. But before I could even thank him and bask in the compliment, it was followed by a caveat. “Yeah, I read it before I stuffed your paper into the air conditioner’s vent to block the cold air from coming in.” “Well, at least my paper serves a purpose,” I answered as we all share...

The Lena-Winslow Theater Department had a massive scheduling headache considering how strong their football and volleyball teams were this fall. With cast members on both of them, trying to find times when they could actually perform their Fall Play – 'Rogues' Gallery' – was not easy, so ... on Sunday afternoon, I took it all in. Now, I had some issues with the show, but the overwhelming impression I got was that the Panthers really have a lot of solid performers. Madi Schierloh and Natalie McNu...
Just remember, the only machine in a casino that always gives you money, is the ATM. I’m leaving you and going to Las Vegas. Men there will pay me $500 for what I do for you for free! (Fine, go, I want to see how you live off of $1000 a year.) The difference between praying in a church, and praying in a casino, is that in a casino – you really mean it. Casino Rule #5: Never ask the Roulette guy if the French wheel was imported. I got lucky the last time I went gambling … I accidentally left my wallet at home. Casino Rule #1: Never gamble more...

There are those who will say that the Blackhawk/Warren Warriors failed as they were beaten by the Edgar Wildcats in the Division 7A state championship game at Camp Randall Thursday morning by a score of 36-6. They'd be wrong. Falling in the state title contest is never easy, and right now the Warriors are probably feeling a bit down, as well as beaten up. Make no mistake, Edgar is a power. In fact, the Edgar team that beat them, had also beaten the eventual 6A champion – Stratford - by a 40-6 r...

The General Assembly recently completed the 2023 Fall Veto Session, and there was no shortage of political gamesmanship on display. It is typical during veto session to examine bills with upcoming sunset dates and determine which ones will be continued. Two sunsetting bills took center stage during this year’s veto session. The first is 2017 legislation sponsored by Senator Kwame Raoul who now serves as Illinois’ Attorney General. The legislation, SB1722 (Public Act 100-0003), established hig...

Any Lena-Winslow football fan who is honest, will tell you that watching Panther games can be rather boring. Wondering at what point the running clock might get triggered is not what most avid football fans would call exciting. But the IHSA semi-final on Saturday in Chicago against the Hope Eagles did not follow that pattern. Let's be blunt, the Eagles were bigger, stronger, faster and overall better athletes. To be totally fair, Lena-Winslow was out-classed by them ... on paper. But the...
