By now, everyone knows how the chances of seeing basketball in December appear to be slim to none. But at some point, the games will be played – everyone is still in agreement on that. We just don't know when. But the expectation that the games will eventually be allowed to go on with a couple of major rules put into place – the biggest one being – No fans will be allowed. True, there is talk about how a school could allow 25% capacity of their gym in to watch – but that number will vary by...

You know, being a kid was great. Being a grown up is hard work. As a kid we played some and we worked a lot. Being a farm kid meant we worked hard and we did everything the old fashioned way. I started driving a tractor when I was about six years old. I drove the baler where we went in low first as slow as we could go with just enough throttle so the plunger wouldn’t jam on the baler. I knew how to throw the lever to shut the PTO off and I knew how to push in the clutch and brake to stop the t...
I have a new business partner. No, I didn’t fire Terry, although there are times, he tries my patience … but I’m sure I drive him nuts too, so that works. What happened is that – as I may have mentioned, my wife and I got a new dog from Freeport’s Friends Forever. We tend to prefer rescuing a dog – partly because we don’t have the patience to train a puppy anymore – but mostly because a rescued dog seems to know it was just released from hell, so they are far more eager to please. So my n...

You see that drunk guy over there? Ten years ago he proposed to me and I rejected him. I just can't believe that after all of this time, he's still celebrating. Here's another secret for success: If you get caught sleeping on the job, slowly raise your head and say, "In Jesus name, Amen." A baby's laughter is the most beautiful sounds you will ever hear ... Unless it's three in the morning, you're home alone, and you don't have a baby. I was in a job interview today when the manager handed me his laptop and said, "I want you to try and sell...
When the announcement first came out – that the IHSA was going to go ahead and allow schools to play basketball in violation of the Governor's order, it seemed to open the door for local schools to give their athletes a season – while Springfield was trying to take it away. The IHSA was standing up to the big bully that was trying to shut down High School sports. They were being a champion to the cause ... or so it seemed at first. But ... a deeper look at what happened tends to paint a far dif...

While Election results from Tuesday’s General Election will not be certified for several weeks, it certainly appears that voters have summarily rejected an effort backed by Governor JB Pritzker and Illinois Democrats to change our State Constitution to allow for a progressive income tax increase, which they believed would annually raise $3.7 billion in new taxes. It is not surprising that voters are sick and tired of the games played by Springfield politicians with continual and broken p...
On November 2, the American Red Cross collected 47 units of blood products at the Scales Mound drive. The FFA goal for the drive was 45 units, and 48 people came through the door to help. Many thanks to our support team from the Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the United Methodist Church, both of Scales Mound, for working the canteen to ensure our donors left well-fed and hydrated. Thank you to Tom and Karen Griffin for greeting our donors and making them feel welcome. A special thanks for the...
I know, I know, technically it's not over as we all still sit around waiting for the final vote tallies to be argued over before finally finding out who our next president will be. But, the process of actually "voting" is now over ... at least outside of Philadelphia – so now I can say something that has been bugging me for a long time. When did the United States become the arena for a two team race that is so blatantly cut-throat? Now, I'm not blaming any one side more than the other – to set...
