Lena-Winslow knew that their contest at home Monday night against Forreston would not see the Cardinals at full strength. Stuck in the midst of a rebuilding year to begin with, Forreston was further depleted due to missing some players because of Covid. But the game was very much in doubt early on as Forreston had a knack for stripping the ball away before the Panthers were able to even put up a shot. At the first mask time out, Lena-Winslow was up 9-6, but the entire game changed over the next...
Most students aren't old enough to remember this, but it wasn't that long ago when there was no three point line in High School basketball. Every basket was worth two points – no matter how far away you shot from – which made the game pretty easy ... you got it inside as much as possible. Tuesday night's conference battle for first place in the north between Orangeville and Lena-Winslow took fans back to those long forgotten days ... not by choice, but because nobody could hit anything from the...
Let's be honest, at the beginning of the Girls' Basketball season almost everyone had written off the Eastland Cougars as far as being considered a post season threat. After losing their star talent to graduation, the Cougars simply had no offense as they were blown out early and often at the Forreston Tournament. "Oh yeah, we've come a long way," said head coach Nicole Brinker. "We knew we could play good defense, and we did. There were games where we held people to only 30 points, but we...

If you come driving through Winslow, you will notice a large sign proclaiming this town to be the home of Doc Carver. Who was Doc Carver? Doc Carver was born in Winslow in 1851. Carver would become a famous frontiersman, dentist, showman, actor, acrobat, equestrian and a world champion marksman. Much of Carver's early life is blurry because he was a proponent of the American Tall Tale. In American folklore, his life and legend are right there with Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, and Buffalo Bill...

February is American Heart Month, and what better way to celebrate it than together as a family. American Heart Month brings awareness to heart health and inspires us to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent heart disease. Symptoms of heart disease generally do not show up until a person reaches middle age and thus are commonly thought of as an issue only for older adults. However, research shows that fatty plaque buildup begins in childhood and progresses into adulthood. Therefore, to decrease the risk of developing heart disease, the American...

We had a little incident last week in our neighborhood. The police dubbed it “The Barefoot Bandit.” The story goes that a guy was traveling down our road when he got stuck in a snow drift. He had become disoriented and had no idea where he was. Instead of calling for help on his cell phone from inside his car, he opted to get out and walk to the nearest house, which was just down the road from us. No one answered the door so he broke a window and went inside and called the police on him...
Growing up in Indiana, it was almost a requirement that you loved basketball. Now, I’ve never gotten into the pros. Our former artist Thomas is a huge Bulls fan and knows the NBA like I know the NFL, but that was never my cup of tea. For me, I always preferred the college hoops. You could play zone defense, the stall used to be a part of the game, and there was just a lot more strategy involved and players weren’t going through the motions for a paycheck. Anyway, back in 1976, when I was onl...
Pecatonica High School had no way of knowing last summer when tournament invitations went out that they would be so lucky, but the High School Boys' Basketball teams that participated in their annual MLK Tournament over the weekend made up quite an impressive field. Opening round games featured: Undefeated Scales Mound against Durand Eastland against Chicago Intrinsic Pecatonica against Galena East Dubuque against Polo In short, there were no "weak sisters" in the field, and only one team had a...

Halfway through their annual showdown with rival Dakota, the Pantherhawks were on the wrong end of a 18-9 team score. But then everything began to turn as Jared Dvorak got the party started with a hard fought 7-4 decision over Case Rockey of Dakota to close the margin. The big swing came when Griffin Luke pinned Adrian Arellona at the 2:34 mark to make the score 19-18. With both teams knowing they would be trading forfeits later in the match, everything ultimately came down to the heavyweight bo...

I told my date to text me when she got home … she must be homeless. The only thing I keep thinking of while looking at all of the online dating options is, “My God, I’m going to be single my entire life.” The only thing good about online dating is that I get to meet and break up with someone without ever leaving the house. Based on the content of your online dating profile, I’m guessing literacy is not one of the characteristics we share. If you’re afraid of not getting what you ordered when online shopping, you should try online dating. I w...

Rhett Barkau was not in the best of moods at the Virginia International Raceway last summer when his car wrecked midway through the race, but that mood quickly changed when he got some exciting news. "The guy who was right behind me in the points race for Rookie of the Year didn't finish the race either," Rhett explained. "So that left me with a 40 point lead over him with only one race to go." Competing in the Trans Am 2 class last summer, points were awarded for the Rookie of the Year honor ba...
Nobody can be sure exactly when the fire started, so it might have been building inside the middle of the Lanark Building Center for hours late Sunday afternoon before it got big enough to be noticed from the outside of the building. But at 7:30 Sunday night, January 9th, the 911 call was made. "I got a call from a friend of mine from Mount Carroll who heard it on the scanner," said Building Center Manager Mark Macomber. "I got there just before the fire trucks arrived. When I got there, you cou...
