  • We Knew We'd Win Tonight

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

In the opening match of the Galena Class 1A Volleyball Regional, it appeared to everyone in attendance that the East Dubuque Warriors were going to move on to the semi-final round. The Warriors had already claimed game one in impressive fashion behind eight kills by senior Anna Berryman to win going away 25-16. But you have to win two games to claim the match victory, and Hornet head coach Keri Werner knew her team had a lot more in it. "We played too timid in game one," Werner said. "I told...

  • Ice Cream And Sushi?

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

The outcome of Tuesday night's 1A Regional Volleyball battle between Eastland and Morrison was never really in doubt. Morrison might have some great kids who will go on to be very successful in life ... but not in volleyball. So, the concern for the Cougars, was not to play "down" to their level. "This team has driven me crazy," said head coach Kelsey Thurman. "I swear they're too nice. If they played our game, we'd blow right past teams, but they let up against them and it's almost like they...

  • Some Lessons Are Tough

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

The River Ridge Wildcats Volleyball team is owed an apology. When the season began, and we did our Fall Sports Preview, we didn't think they would finish higher than maybe fifth in the NUIC West ... little did we know. Behind the first year exploits of coach Brittany Sinagra, the Cougars lost their first seven matches, then ... suddenly ... began to "get it". With only one senior in the starting lineup, the young Wildcats found some stars in the form of Addison Albrecht, Gwen Miller and Sadie Fr...

  • Perfect Time To Peak

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

All season long the Lena-Winslow Panther Volleyball team had shown flashes of excellence as they would have a strong of plays that seemed to be on another level. But at some point in the match, something would happen, a let down or big hit would occur, and suddenly all of the high level play they had been pulling off would crumble away and they'd lose ... yet again. This was the team that never beat Aquin, Dakota, Durand or Pearl City all season long. In fact, they never had a high quality win a...

  • Not Much Of A Warm Up

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

Aquin Volleyball coach Robyn Stovall was only able to come up with one thing she was disappointed in after her Bulldogs had completely dominated their Regional semifinal battle over Rockford Christian Life 25-6, 25-8 ... "It would have been nice to have had a more competitive game," she said. A night earlier, Eastland didn't allow Morrison a kill in game one of their match, but still gave up eleven points on their own unforced errors. Wednesday night in Lena, Aquin didn't give up a kill to...

  • Something To Shout About

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

Sure, the Aquin Bulldogs had won the NUIC North, but who was going to remember that in three or four years. What teams want to legitimize their strong seasons is a Regional championship that can hang on the wall for all time. But in their championship battle with the Cinderella Panthers from Lena-Winslow, Aquin was in trouble. The Bulldogs had already made six service errors, nine unforced errors, and the game was deadlocked at 25-25 with momentum on the side of Lena-Winslow as they had just...

  • Your Voices

    Nov 3, 2021

Dan, I got myself a free trial subscription today so I could read your articles on the school board. It is really nice to know others live on the same plane of reality I do! I attended that meeting after hearing how things were becoming nightmarish for my friends in the administration and on the board. Also, I was particularly incensed when I heard that Mr. Shexnayder had attended the Dakota board meeting to rally that audience to his cause. Wow, I was livid for days and only felt better after I sent the board the attached letter. I did go to...

  • Submit Stories Of Veterans To Be Showcased At Illinois Capitol

    Nov 3, 2021

State Sen. Brian Stewart (R-Freeport) is encouraging constituents to submit a tribute and photo of loved ones who served their country in the military, to be displayed on the annual Veterans Day “Wall of Honor” in the Illinois Capitol. “The Wall of Honor tribute is a great way to remember our veterans, share their stories, and honor their service on Veterans Day,” Stewart said. The Senate Republicans have been hosting the annual Veterans Day tribute since 2017. This year’s Wall of Honor will be on display from Nov. 11 through Nov. 20. Famil...

  • One Man's Opinion

    Jim Sacia|Nov 3, 2021

"Now is the time for all good people to come to the aid of their country". In 1961 my typing class teacher, Mr. Walks, had us type that sentence over and over on our new Royal manual typewriters. The phrase and its meaning never sank in. Today I see it as the most prophetic of comments. On January 20, 1961 President John F. Kennedy delivered his Inaugural Address. Near the end of his 1355 word address he stated: "And so my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you...

Ever go bike riding? When our children were growing up, my wife and I would take them bike riding. One trail we really liked was the Great River Trail along the Mississippi River. It’s a beautiful trail that winds its way right along the Mississippi River. We’d drive to Fulton, IL with our bikes in the back of the truck, then bike the trail down to Cordova, IL. There are tourist attractions to get your attention along the way. There’s also a 3M nuclear power plant right on the Missi...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

As the Lena-Winslow volleyball team began to assemble around me for the postgame interview following their incredible two game victory over a very powerful Dakota squad, I was feeling guilty for having predicted that they would probably lose. “I owe you guys an apology,” I said. “I picked Dakota to beat you tonight, and you proved me wrong.” “You mean you didn’t believe in us?” asked Cierra Mapes with fake disappointment. “I’m sorry, I was an ass.” “Well … are you going to put that in your colum...

  • The Lighter Side

    Nov 3, 2021

Ever have one of those moments when you realize, in the middle of driving, that you haven't been paying attention at all ... How am I alive? Who gave me a license? That man in the left lane looks like he is trying to pass me, so I better speed up to keep up with the flow of traffic. Oh my car can stop on a dime ... all it needs is a wall. Sunday is the "Let's drive as slowly as we can in the fast lane," day. While driving to work, robbers jumped into me car and stole everything. They were Pirates of the car I be in. With the rise in...

  • How Do You Like Me Now?

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

It might be hard to believe, especially when you look at the incredible season they had, but there were people in the region who were beginning to have doubts about the strength of the Lena-Winslow Panthers. After all, in the final week of the season, the Forreston Cardinals literally manhandled them – something that just never happened. And coming into Lena to take on the Panthers in the first round of the playoffs was a formidable Aurora Christian Eagle squad that ... gasp ... knew how to t...

  • Freeport High School Presents "High School Musical"

    Nov 3, 2021

After almost two years without a theatrical performance in the Jeannette Lloyd Theatre, the Freeport High School Theatre Department is thrilled to announce its new production of Disney’s High School Musical, November 11, 12, and 13. This exuberant show is a great way to kick off the new FHS theatre season. High School Musical debuted on the Disney Channel in 2006, and it quickly became a favorite with young people across America. It’s the story of two East High juniors from rival cliques: Troy Bolton (the captain of the basketball team) and...

  • EPC Proves Innovative With Dinner Addition

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

To say that High School Theater has been hit hard by COVID would be an understatement. Try showing facial expressions and character development while wearing a mask – let alone trying to allow hundreds of people to assemble as an audience. Our Theater Awards have been in hibernation, and their return is tenuous as we've also lost some judges due to Covid as well as life itself. Last year, there were some attempts to put on a show as Lena-Winslow did one that was televised – but the masks bei...

  • The State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Nov 3, 2021

To say the Democrats “have taken Illinois families for granted in the past” is the understatement of the year. But now, they have openly declared war on families. Taxpayer funding of abortion was just the start a few years ago. Now, late at night in the second week of the Fall Veto Session of the Illinois House, Democrats passed legislation and sent it to the Governor to allow young girls, 17 and under, to be provided an abortion without ever telling their parents (Senate Bill 1169, House Ame...

  • Bronco Gun-ar Has Six Shots

    Dan Stevens|Nov 3, 2021

There's a "fun" atmosphere permeating throughout the Orangeville School District these days. Sure, a new Superintendent that is willing to go out Trick or Treating with the Kindergarten students dressed up as a chicken helps, but that's not what we're talking about. The Broncos are a proud community that won a state championship in football ... yes, it was a long time ago, but they still won one. So, suffering through decades of falling short was taking its' toll. There were flashes of...

  • Aquin Haunted By Plays Not Made

    Todd McKenna|Nov 3, 2021

In football the plays that are made show up on the scoreboard as points, but often it's the plays that aren't made that make the difference in winning or losing the game. That was definitely the case at Aquin High School Saturday as the Bulldogs fell to Amboy-Lamoille 52-28 in the first round of the 8-man league playoffs. The loss closes the first season Aquin has played in the league adapting to new rules and a different way to play football. Although they exited the playoffs in the first...
