  • Eastland Moves On

    Dan Stevens|Nov 2, 2022

In the opening round of the Polo 1A Volleyball Regional, the Eastland Cougars and Pearl City Wolves both came in with young teams, but it was the experience of the Cougars that carried them to the 25-14, 25-22 sweep to advance into the semi-finals against Sterling Newman. Game one was over early. Maybe it was the Regional atmosphere, maybe the Wolves had Cougars in the headlights, whatever the reason – Pearl City came out flat, and never got into a rhythm. Of the 25 points the Cougars needed t...

  • Seniority Rules

    Dan Stevens|Nov 2, 2022

In their opening match of the Christian Life Volleyball Regional, the Scales Mound Hornets deserved to win. The Hornets only made five unforced errors, while Dakota made nine; and only made three service errors, while Dakota made five. In fact, after trading points back and forth until it was 10-10, the Hornets claimed the lead and looked destined to pull off what many would have seen as the biggest Cinderella story of the post season. The Indians used their first time out after junior Rylee...

  • Bronco Pride

    Dan Stevens|Nov 2, 2022

I'd seen it hundreds of times before, a team fought hard in game one of a volleyball match only to come up inches short. But after trying so hard and leaving everything out on the floor in the effort, they always got blown out in game two. Wednesday night after the cross-country trek to Alden-Hebron (Thanks for nothing IHSA) I was sure I was going to see it again. The Orangeville Broncos had pulled off a stunner in game one by beating Durand 25-14 – although in all fairness, it was Durand who w...

  • Turning Momentum

    Dan Stevens|Nov 2, 2022

Anyone who has ever played sports knows the feeling, a mistake there, a good play by the opponent there, and suddenly no matter what you do, or how hard you try, things seem to be going against you. No sport is affected more by momentum than Volleyball, and that was put on display for all to see in the Regional championship between the Galena Pirates and Lena-Winslow Panthers. Early in game one, the Panthers couldn't do anything right, and Galena couldn't do anything wrong. When it got to 10-3...

  • Your Voices

Editor; I am voting Jazmin Wingert for Stephenson County Clerk. I have personally known Jazmin Wingert for many years, through her involvement in the agricultural community, church, and numerous service opportunities in the community. She is incredibly detail oriented, self-motivated, and a leader in all aspects of her life. The same tireless work ethic she exhibits on a day-to-day basis will be a great asset to our community as County Clerk. Jazmin is one of the next generation of leaders in our community. She will serve us with integrity as...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Nov 2, 2022

“Signs, signs, everywhere a sign, blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind. Do this, don’t do that, can’t you read the sign?” So say the vocals to the song “Signs.” According to YouTube, “Signs", by Canadian rock group The Five Man Electrical Band (formerly The Staccatos), was written by lead vocalist Les Emmerson. It was released as a B-side single in 1970 from their "Good-byes and Butterflies" album and then re-released as an A-side single in 1971 where it reached #3 on the US Billboard Hot...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Nov 2, 2022

I've always loved Halloween. I never got into horror movies, and can remember going to see the original movie "Halloween" after a friend had told me every single thing that was going to happen in the movie so I didn't look like a panicked idiot in front of the date I was taking – and I STILL looked like a panicked idiot as it scared the poop out of me – even knowing what would happen ahead of time. So, no, I am not a horror movie fan – except for the classics – Frankenstein, Dracula, Wolf Ma...

  • The Lighter Side

    Nov 2, 2022

What do you mean I’m not registered to vote? I vote every single week on American Idol. If voting could really change anything, they’d make it illegal. I see there is a four year gap on your resume. Did you work for the Trump administration? “No, I was in prison. I swear!” When the pollster asked me who I voted for as I came out of the polling place, I told him I was trying to forget. Every year I go in and vote for beer … it’s really quite satisfying. What did Russia do to influence the election? They helped the democrats finally deliver on...

  • It Will Get Tougher, Honest

    Dan Stevens|Nov 2, 2022

Walking out of the stadium following Lena-Winslow's round one playoff win over Chicago Richards Saturday, it was a good thing there was nobody left in the ticket booth because everyone would have been asking for refunds. To be perfectly honest, Lena-Winslow's JV scrimmage against Chicago Richards only took place because so many small schools have shifted to the eight man format. With fewer schools competing, even though Richards was 5-4 (thanks to a forfeit win) they probably would not have qual...

  • How Should You Vote?

    Dan Stevens|Nov 2, 2022

With midterm elections set for early November, there is always a question regarding how much voter turnout will occur in an election that does not include choosing a president. But there are some serious local issues on the ballot that will impact us much more than anybody sitting in the White House. Freeport Home Rule (Important point on this one – we have no vested interest what-so-ever, so the information we got was from those educated about the issue who gave both sides of the argument.) Wit...

  • Decorate An Ornament For The Hero Tree

    Nov 2, 2022

Downtown Freeport will be bright for the holidays with a show of festive spirit and humble recognition for our local heroes. The Hero Tree will stand majestically in front of the bell tower at the Stephenson County Courthouse for all to see from Sunday, November 20 through the new year. To make the tree truly represent Stephenson County heroes, we need your help! We are inviting any Stephenson County resident to create a Hero Ornament to be hung on the tree for this holiday season. Clear bulb...

  • Foster Parenting And Beyond

    Nov 2, 2022

Northwest Illinois is home to amazing people who care about their neighbors. You step up to help when you see a need. Today I would like to highlight one of those needs. Across the state, there is a shortage of foster families to accommodate the thousands of children in the DCFS system waiting to be placed in a loving and stable home. If you are interested in learning about becoming a foster parent in Illinois or other ways you can make a difference, my office can connect you with the resources you need. Every year, thousands of foster...

  • Farm Bureau Beat

    Victoria Hansen|Nov 2, 2022

I remember when I was in about seventh grade, American Eagle had come out with this shirt in preparation for that election season. The shirt simply read “VOTE”. Now obviously as a seventh grader I know I wasn’t able to vote and wouldn’t be able to vote for many years. But growing up my family put a great emphasis on voting. My sister and I would tag along with my mother as she voted before work each election and if we were lucky, we’d stop for breakfast at McDonalds and as a kid that was a big...
