It's really not too hard to figure out how the Scales Mound Hornets have been so successful this season in spite of graduating all five starters from last season's third place in state team. Turnovers. "That's our game," said head coach Erik Kudronowicz. "We turn opponents over and then turn that into points at the other end." No team is better equipped to do it with seniors Charlie WIegel and Jacob Duerr handling the point guard defensive positions, the two seem to have a sixth sense in regard...
It's been a long time since the Warren Lady Warriors were a force on the basketball court. And while they still may not be among the area elite, they have reached the level of being "dangerous" – capable of knocking off a top tier team that is foolish enough to look past them. (Just ask Morrison) Wednesday night, against their friendly rival Stockton, the Warriors continued to impress – in spite of some sloppy play. On one side of the coin, they were the same Warren team people were fam...
The River Ridge Wildcats are known for their full court pressure defense, but it's not like some high-pressure teams we've seen in the past. "Some teams press and don't care if they give up a layup because all they want to do is speed up the game," said Wildcat head coach Jeremy Knauer. "But we're not a strong offensive team, so we need to get turnovers and transition points. We can't allow the ball into the paint when we're pressing." For thirty minutes, the Stockton Blackhawks handled the...
It was supposed to be an epic showdown – the top two teams in the North, who went into overtime in their first meeting this season, squaring off in their first conference battle. Two television stations showed up to tape it, the only live sports reporter in the region sat his large butt in the corner (camera in hand) and they even had an exhibition where the little elementary girls got to run up and down the floor during halftime. But for some reason, the Orangeville Broncos came armed and r...

Believe it or not, some studies have shown that there are many people who fear having to speak in public more than being eaten alive by a shark, bear or other large carnivore. So, the saying that speech kids hold onto is a simple one: "What some people fear more than death, we do for fun!" Covid riddled a lot of High school extra curricular events, but it nearly killed competitive speaking. But now that the days of being forced to wear a mask while trying to deliver a dramatic interpretation...

Not much scares me. What does is the deafening silence of good people doing nothing. I have no idea who to credit with that saying. I do know that is what is happening at our southern border is an abomination and makes absolutely no sense. Where are our politicians and professional organizations putting pressure on the Biden administration to get it under control!? The figures are staggering. 300 overdose deaths every day in America from the fentanyl manufactured in China and smuggled across...
By Kate Leonard River Ridge Business Student Mrs. Laity’s high school business class of only 8 students was asked to take on the task of River Ridge’s annual Santa Store. In the past, Kim Thorsen (former River Ridge teacher) has always run the Santa Store with assistance from middle school students. This year she decided to hand it off to the business class to practice some of what they have been learning. They did everything from taking care of the elementary students' forms to making tags for each individual student’s gifts. They also helpe...
On Thursday, January 5, 2023 my dad woke up in the Land of Glory! This is from my journal from last week ... My dad is in the last hours of his earthly life. We got him home from the hospital on Monday evening. Since then, we’ve been gathering around his bedside day and night. One or more of us is with him 24/7. The Hospice nurses believe he has a few hours to as many as a couple of days to live. But Dad’s a tough old guy and he may surprise them. Regardless, God has given us this time with him...
I have to be careful how I word this because there are kids reading this right now … Do you know the classic joke women tell about how men have a false sense of proportion? You know, men tend to think that things are “bigger” than they actually are? Well, this has nothing to do with anything sexual, so get that idea out of your head, but the axiom was proven in our house this past week. You see, we have in our family room a television that sat on a cabinet at the far end between two windo...

There is a time each year when the weather goes from magical to miserable … they call it January. It’s so damn cold outside, I just farted snowflakes. If complaining about the cold weather was an Olympic Sport, my wife would be the gold medalist. Well, … on the bright side … there are no mosquitoes. I know I’m snowed in, but it’s nothing a little salt can’t handle … especially around the rim of my margarita glass. OK Winter, you made your point … I’m a wussy. They’re forecasting a wintry mix for our area of the Midwest. My idea of a wintry m...
