  • Some Regionals Come Early

    Dan Stevens|Oct 30, 2024

While Stockton, Galena, Lena-Winslow, Eastland and several other teams are getting pumped up and primed for next week's Volleyball Regionals, there are others who are not nearly as excited about them. The Warren Warriors got a very low seed, and are not expected to advance out of the opening day of competition. So, while they will show up, and do their best, a much more important game – for them – took place Tuesday night in Warren when they faced off against West Carroll. To begin with, it was...

  • Another Golden Moment For Stockton

    Dan Stevens|Oct 30, 2024

Many years ago, back under coach Chris Thornton I believe, the Stockton Blackhawks adopted a special "alternate" home jersey – gold in color – and only worn for special games, no more than once a season. The impact of the jerseys is still remembered by those players who played for the Blackhawks. As many said that once the coaches brought them out, the entire team got pumped up. And even though they did not "always" result in a victory on the field, their importance to the tradition of the pro...

  • Lighter Side

    Oct 30, 2024

My bank has a service where they text me my balance. I just don’t think they should add ‘LOL’ at the end. Hmm, I see you have over drafted your account 93 times in the past 12 months, but I’m sure this time it was OUR fault. There is a special place in hell for the people who press the call button more than once in the bank drive ups. I went to the bank to open a joint account. They asked, “With Whom?” and I said “Whoever has the most money.” Need a tool to measure productivity? It’s called a bank statement. The bank told us our children were...

  • Your Voices

    Oct 30, 2024

Letter to the Editor To the voters of Jo Daviess County District 7-Nora, part Warren & part Rush – I urge you to strongly consider your vote for John Creighton. John has been a strong advocate for you over the years! He is very fiscally responsible and has done his best to stretch your tax dollars as far as they can go. John has made sure that there is no wasteful spending in this county as he commits to keeping the budget in a surplus. He has been very active in trying to generate income through other means of revenue to keep property taxes f...

  • Yet Another Delay In Broshous Trial

    Dan Stevens|Oct 30, 2024

It was supposed to be a Pre-trial hearing – where everyone would simply confirm that they were ready to proceed to the trial scheduled to begin on Monday, October 28th. That’s what it was supposed to be. “We’re asking to move the trial back your honor,” said Assistant State’s Attorney Thomas Madigan to Judge Schorsch. “In conversations with the attorney for the defendant, we learned that there is some discovery that they have not received yet.” “This is a two year old case, and we’re still h...

  • Van Merchant Scholarships

    Oct 30, 2024

This year, the Van Merchant Rural & Agriculture Scholarship Fund awarded $20,200 to 21 students. Shortly before the Pecatonica farmer passed away in 2020 at the age of 85, Merchant outlined his wishes for a fund to support area graduates’ skill development as they sought farm-based careers. This year, Luke Stabenow received the largest scholarship of $5,000. The 2024 Lena-Winslow graduate is currently attending WyoTech to prepare for a career as a diesel mechanic. “It was as if Luke was present when Van discussed his intentions for this fun...

  • Thank An Illinois Farmer

    Andrew Chesney|Oct 30, 2024

This time of year, motorists share the road with a special group of people who measure time by the acre rather than by the hour. Its harvest season in Illinois! Agriculture is the top industry in Illinois and a key driver of our state’s economy. This is due to the rich, fertile soil, and temperate climate during growing season. According to the IL Department of Agriculture, about 75% of the state’s total land mass— 27 million acres, is dedicated to agriculture, and 96% of Illinois’ farms a...

  • Forward In Spite Of The Foolish

    Dan Stevens|Oct 30, 2024

It may not have been a record, but after a more than three-hour Freeport City Council meeting that included a ton of the usual nonsense and idiocy, the overwhelming feeling when it was over, was an honest sense of accomplishment. The main issue, that brought a lot of people in for public comment, was the Open Bible Water Main debate. The Reader’s Digest Version, is that the Daycare Center at Open Bible was being forced by the Fire Marshall to attach their sprinkler system to City Water, so t...

  • Regional Predictions

    Dan Stevens|Oct 30, 2024

The conference champions have been crowned, and Regional action begins this week throughout the state, but which teams do we think will be hoisting the wooden plaque on Thursday night? Serena Regional This is the least interesting of all the regionals that will feed into the Polo sectional. Newark is the number one seed, and they are a traditional power, so ... we'll go ahead and say they win the title so we can move on to the ones that are more interesting. Indian Creek Regional This one...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 30, 2024

As a seasoned pastor of over 30 years, I have received a variety of comments and advice on how to do my job. Most of it has been positive and encouraging. In fact, October is Pastor Appreciation Month and last Sunday our Board of Elders colluded with our congregation and together they dedicated time at both of our services for people to express their love and gratitude to my wife and me. It was fun and encouraging. Every year as election season closes in, I have found that the vast majority of p...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 30, 2024

This column is coming with a warning: “Unwanted mental images may be formed by the reading of this column, so anybody eating, or operating heavy machinery might want to wait until near a bathroom before continuing.” As many people are aware, I have been dealing – as many of us are – with the payment of my sins regarding diet as I have been added to the roles of people in America with type two diabetes. The number of pills needed each day makes me feel like I’m a walking pharmacy, and the need...
