From the people we've talked to, it's been a long time in coming. There are All Star basketball games for the boys' and girls' teams, Highland plays host to an All Star Baseball game, and the Shriners have been doing All Star football games for years, but now – for the first time – we will be seeing an All Star Volleyball game this June. Village Voices is going to sponsor, and has begun the process of putting together, the first ever All Star Volleyball contest. There is still a lot of pla...
It was a scene Panther fans had seen plenty of times before ... never by the opposing team. Lena-Winslow was the ground pounding club that slowly and methodically drained the life out of their opponents. But this ... this was Forreston ... driving 89 yards ... in 22 plays ... over more than right minutes ... and the Panthers were powerless to stop them. In what will be talked about for years to come, and adds yet another chapter to the folklore regarding the Panther/Cardinal rivalry, the...
The Galena Pirates, Aquin Bulldogs and Eastland Cougars have all claimed their respective conference championships, but now we enter the post-season Regional competition. So, who do we think will be hoisting the wooden plaques this coming Thursday night? Let's take a look. AFC Regional Ok, this one is easy. To be perfectly blunt there is a lot of pressure on the Pearl City Wolves, because nobody else in the entire Regional should challenge them. Which means, that if they were to falter ... it...

I was recently asked by someone who is preparing to teach a secular class on transgenderism, what our church’s views are on the topic. I had never been asked this before and although I have strongly held beliefs, I had never formally presented them to someone. So I went to work and did some research and put my thoughts together and wrote them down. Then I met with this individual and had a two hour interview. It was very constructive, informative and enlightening, to say the least. The r...
It’s Halloween – one of my favorite holidays – so for a long time I was struggling over what to write for my column. I mean, I had already told my personal Halloween stories of when I was a kid, and I also did a column ranking the best Halloween Candy … so it was a serious struggle trying to come up with a Halloween topic good enough to make into a column when all of a sudden it hit me … I was watching television the other night when there was a commercial about how the station was going to...

The Freeport City Council, Mayor Jodi Miller, Winter Construction, and Fehr Graham broke ground on Freeport's new water treatment facility on October 15. This highly anticipated water facility has been in development since 2017 and is slated to provide 40-50 percent of the city's daily water needs. It is part of the city's $12.8 million well and water treatment project to upgrade its antiquated water system built in the 1880s. The project is funded through Illinois Environmental Protection...
It's the time of year when leaves of summer begin to fall. Bare limbs reach for gray autumn skies. Darkness will soon cloak the landscape as the last moments of daylight surrender to the nightfall. You may hear eerie sounds that stir anxious feelings. A howl somewhere off in the distance or footsteps behind you. A light fog may swirl through the streets and waft slowly through the surrounding area. A full moon may rise and cast a ghostly glow over the terrain. In the mixture of pale moonlight...
They might call the small candy "Fun Sized" but it takes three or four of them to get me mildly amused. Every Halloween I pretend to be the same thing ... not at home. I hope it's not too cold this Halloween. I'd hate to have the garden hose freeze before the trick or treaters show up. People who yell "Trick or Treat" are giving me one too many options. Nothing says Halloween like Christmas decorations. You know, some of the kids in my neighborhood actually look better in masks. What's the big...
