  • Blackhawk's Pirate Nightmare Continues

    Todd McKenna|Oct 25, 2023

The Stockton Blackhawks traveled to Galena Friday with dreams of making the playoffs for the first time in four years, but instead the trip turned into a nightmare as the Pirates scored 15 points in the 4th quarter and earned the victory 27-24. The Blackhawks led at halftime 16-12 and increased that lead early in the 3rd quarter to 24-12, but the Galena defense stiffened in the final period and they found success with an aerial attack led by quarterback Roman Romer. When the dust had settled, Galena had scored two touchdowns in the final 5 minu...

  • Cardinals Get 'Dunk'ed

    Dan Stevens|Oct 25, 2023

There are some good high school football rivalries, and then there is the one between Lena-Winslow and Forreston. Between them, they have won the state championship in each of the last six years. And with a pair of exceptional coaches, and student athletes who embody what we all love in high school sports ... there simply is no comparison. Friday night in Forreston, the Panthers were the heavy favorites, but Forreston had a solid game plan. To begin with, Forreston was running as much clock as p...

  • Volleyball Playoff Predictions

    Dan Stevens|Oct 25, 2023

Galena, Fulton and Lena-Winslow all swept through their respective NUIC conference divisions to claim the crown, but now come the Regionals – so where do we think they will stack up when they compete in the post season tournament? Glad you asked. Earlville Regional There are no local teams competing at Earlville, so do you really care? Newark is the top seed for a region, so expect them to win it and make the trip to Eastland for the Sectional. AFC Regional All of the first three matches will p...

  • Turning Into A Poop Show

    Dan Stevens|Oct 25, 2023

So, what’s your definition of a “poop” show when it comes to local government? Consider the following … As most people know, there is a major impasse in regard to the potential sale of the Nursing Home. Ten Board members look at the potential sale of it for 1.6 million dollars, and are more than willing to cut ties and let a company that knows how to manage medical facilities take over. But six Board members refuse to sell … at least for now – and just recently stooped to some rather biza...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Oct 25, 2023

Most people in the print business enjoy getting feedback from their readers, especially the good kind. I read where a certain publication received the following letter to the editor: “Dear Editor: When I subscribed a year ago you stated that if I was not satisfied at the end of the year I could have my money back. Well, I would like to have it back. On second thought, to save you the trouble, you can apply it to next year's subscription." A man takes his place in the theater, but his seat is t...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Oct 25, 2023

Maybe it was because I was a member of a fraternity, or maybe it was because 20 year old guys tend to pull pranks on each other all the time, but when I was in college, getting “pimped” was a major deal. A “pimp” was a practical joke you pulled on a fraternity brother. They ran the entire spectrum from hanging all of the belongings of one guy – furniture, clothes, everything – in a tree, all the way to the time we picked up one guy’s car and placed it on the platform stage sitting in the middle...

  • Lighter Side

    Oct 25, 2023

It’s official. The fastest land mammal is a toddler who’s been asked what’s in their mouth. If you’re a friend with stupid people, you feel like a genius all the time. When I asked “How stupid can you be?” That wasn’t a challenge. Idiots cause stress. Stress causes depression. Depression causes physical ailments. Conclusion: Stupid people make me sick. Just remember, stupid people were put on the earth to test our anger management skills. Scientists say the world is made up of Protons, Neutrons and Electrons … they forgot to mention Morons. It...
