  • A Change Did Them Good

    Dan Stevens|Sep 28, 2022

The Lena-Winslow Panthers were coming off of a tough stretch in their schedule after falling to both Durand and Dakota, but a weekend road trip down to Mount Pulaski for one of the most prestigious tournaments in the state looks like it did them a world of good. "We got to bond," said Alyssa Daughenbaugh. "I thought the bus ride down was good for us." After claiming second place at Pulaski, the Panthers came back to Lena and swept past both Pearl City on Monday, and a vastly improved...

  • Wildcats Sweep Golf Conference

    Sep 28, 2022

The RR/SM Golf Teams had plenty of hardware to show off last week as they claimed both the Boys and Girls Conference Tournament Titles, to go along with the Regular Season Conference Title the Boys already had in hand. What set both the Boys and Girls teams apart, was that they both had their top four golfers all finish in the top 20 overall. For the Wildcat Boys, they were the only team with all four of their top scores lower than 90 over the 18 hole course. Everyone’s attention will now shift to the respective Regionals, scheduled to take pla...

  • We Practice Serving, Honest

    Dan Stevens|Sep 28, 2022

The River Ridge Wildcats have improved to the level of being seen as a major contender in volleyball this season – when you beat a major power like Durand, it changes how people look at you. But the young Wildcats, as good as they are, still have some major work to do. In game one of their conference battle with Warren Thursday night, the Wildcats made seven serving errors. Now, seven errors by itself, is a lot, but the Wildcats made seven in game one, with only two aces to show for it. "We knew...

  • A Not So Pleasant Reunion

    Todd McKenna|Sep 28, 2022

It's been 17 years since the last time the Aquin Bulldogs faced off against a team from Cambridge and that game resulted in a state championship trophy coming home to Freeport for the Bulldogs. Those two schools clashed again Friday night although much has changed since then with Cambridge now part of a co-op program in the Ridgewood Spartans and only eight players per side many of which weren't even born back then. The outcome also was different as the visiting Spartans outlasted the Bulldogs 38-32 in Freeport. As the Bulldogs were driving...

  • Panthers Pass Fulton Test

    Dan Stevens|Sep 28, 2022

All week you were hearing it ... "Lena's good, but who have they played?" "Fulton's the real deal." "We'll see how well they handle the Steamers on Homecoming." And, yes, the Panthers heard it too. But they were also being preached the lesson by their coaching staff. "You're going to get everyone's best shot," head coach Ric Arand told his team. "We have a target on our backs, and you have to be ready for them every single week." But early on, it looked as if Fulton was, indeed, the real deal,...

  • Your Voices

    Sep 28, 2022

Dan; I know — I’m a week late but there’s things to get done before winter. Your words from ‘Points to Ponder’ are so true. “… our world is in desperate need of a common sense kick in the ass.” This is not new. I was outraged and confused when a judge ruled against McDonalds and gave money to a woman who held HOT coffee between her legs. This made it somebody else’s fault. It takes blame away from ourselves. People don’t have to take responsibility for their own actions. Come on, people!!!!! Any action has a reaction. Ya can’t fix stupid. S...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Sep 28, 2022

My phone rang just after five o’clock. I was still in bed and I figured I’d get it when I got up in a few minutes. Sometimes one of my brothers will call early so I didn’t worry about it. About five minutes later my phone rang again. By the time I was able to get downstairs to answer, it was too late. I saw the calls were from two different brothers. At that early hour, that can’t be good. I called one of them back and was told the silo at my other brother’s farm had collapsed in the night and...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Sep 28, 2022

I’ve never been a baby fan. When people would all fawn over a cooing baby, I had no interest. I mean, until they got past the “Squeaker Leaker” stage of life, I couldn’t care less. It’s possible that’s because I never had kids of “my own”. You see, when I got married, my wife had two girls, and while I love them both to death, I was never part of their “Squeaker Leaker” stages in life. For me, I take interest when kids can talk and display their own personality. In fact, when I got married,...

  • Obituaries

    Sep 28, 2022

Lena Alfred “Al” Packard, 87 Alfred “Al” Packard passed away at home on September 18th, 2022. He almost certainly would not have wanted his life’s story read as a standard obituary. Al would have preferred a funny story, likely involving a harmless prank and multiple witty one-liners. It is difficult to execute a prank through an obituary, so in Al’s memory, you’ll settle for one-liners. Al was a natural born storyteller, so sifting through the hyperbole and exaggeration to establish the basics was more difficult than you’d guess. As his b... Full story

  • Lighter Side

    Sep 28, 2022

Whenever the nurse calls my name at the doctor’s office, I like to run through the waiting room like I got called down on the Price is Right. OK, when you tell me to be there 15 minutes early for my appointment, does that mean the doctor will only be 45 minutes late calling me in? I hate it when the doctor says they’ll give me something to ease the pain as he pulls out a six inch long needle of pain killer. The doctor didn’t find anything wrong with me, so shouldn’t he waive the co-pay? You have a rare condition called “Good Health”....

  • Fruits Of Their Labors

    Sep 28, 2022

River Ridge students were presented a bench as a result of three years of sorting, cleaning, and prepping bottle caps. In 2019, Francis Fennell of the Warren's Lions' Club said his organization had bottle caps and that they knew of a company, Green Tree Plastics, in Evansville, IN that would melt the plastics down into a bench. So, River Ridge Wildcats took on the challenge. Then COVID hit and the project went on hold. Once COVID eased up, the sorting, cleaning and prepping returned. On Sept....

  • Citizens Committee Forming

    Sep 28, 2022

A Citizens Committee is being formed to promote a Yes vote in the upcoming Lena-Winslow School District Referendum. The referendum will determine how school board members are chosen. A Yes vote would change from using congressional townships to at-large members. Some of the reasons to vote Yes are: - The use of congressional townships to determine who can serve on a School Board is an archaic system that was used when there were many schools, including one room schools, in a district. Those days are long gone. - The use of congressional...

  • Board Oversteps On Money Pit Payment

    Dan Stevens|Sep 28, 2022

Every month the Stephenson County Board argues over the County Nursing Home – Walnut Acres – and how it is a gigantic financial drain. But no matter how heated the debate, or what numbers are shown – no solution is ever forthcoming and the bills continue to pile up. But at the last meeting on August 23rd, Chairman Hadley and the Board finally reached a point of no return ... First, a little background. There was not enough money to pay the bills for the Nursing Home at the end of June, so the C...

  • ARSB Expanding To Darlington

    Sep 28, 2022

Apple River State Bank announced today that it has closed on the purchase of a bank office at 207 Wells Street in Darlington, WI. The building was constructed in 1987 by Citizens National Bank of Darlington and has been occupied by five regional banks in the intervening years. Associated Bank most recently owned the 14,500-square-foot building. After a remodeling period that utilizes local contractors, the new facility will accommodate both the bank office and professional office space...
