Most people understand how an aggressive hit can result in a "kill" and also a point for a volleyball team. So, being able to get the ball into "system" where a good set can be made to allow that spike to take place is important. But what drives coaches crazy, is when a team is unable to get the ball into system and must hit a "free ball" back over the net because a free ball has little to no chance of getting a point, and makes it easy for the opponent to then get into system. In Warren Monday...
Throughout most of the school year, the Lady Hornets of Scales Mound and Lady Wildcats of River Ridge are on the same team as they co-op in both basketball and softball. So, the one, and only sport in which they oppose each other ... is volleyball. That familiarity with each other makes for a far different kind of match than you would see in most gyms throughout Northwest Illinois. When opposing teams see Addison Albrecht smash a monster hit, or Gwen Miller make one of her line drive drop...
For four years the Lena-Winslow and Aquin seniors had battled it out for volleyball supremacy, with Aquin always coming out on top. The Panthers would have a great team, with a ton of height and talent, only to go up against an Aquin squad destined for the State finals. But this year the tables were turned. This year, for the first time, it was the Panthers who came in as the favorite. The Panthers had the height, the skill and the experience – with only one glitch ... they had never beaten A...
John O'Boyle would have been proud. All season long, head coach Sean Downey had complained about how his team wasn't getting off to a fast start in their games. Friday night in Pearl City, they listened. After holding the Wildcatz to a three and out punt, Stockton got the ball on their own 20 yard-line and proceeded to march ... and march ... and march. Not a single run was over six yards during the drive, but none of them ever went for negative yardage either. For 16 plays the Stockton...
Throughout the season there was a back and forth battle between Fulton and RR/SM for the top team in the NUIC Boys Golf Conference. Last Thursday, Lake Carroll played host to the 18-hole Conference Tournament meet, and when all the numbers were tabulated, the Wildcats claimed top honors in the highly contested Boy's competition, and also saw their Girls edge out a tough Galena squad for top honors. Individually, there were a lot of good stories to tell. Thomas Hereau of Scales Mound was forced...

The future of the Walnut Acres nursing home facility on Walnut Road in Freeport still is cloudy and it looks like it will be in a holding pattern for the foreseeable future. At Thursday's Stephenson County Board meeting, Chairman Scott Helms announced that a vote to hire a legal firm to review the contract proposal by potential buyer Upward Care would be put on hold until Upward Care decides on a date to hold a Town Hall meeting to gather public information on the issue. With the anticipated highlight of the meeting removed, the Board moved on...
Who says God is dead? A few years ago, I’d say about 30 to be exact, there was a little white church out in the middle of nowhere in the country that was in trouble. Their pastor had just stepped down in the middle of controversy and they asked me if I’d be their new pastor. This was not an ideal situation, but I was much obliged to walk through the door God had opened for me. On my first Sunday behind the pulpit, we welcomed about 20 people to the worship service. Word soon got out that the...
OK, I’m sorry, but I need to take a deep breath before this one. I have been covering High School sports for over 30 years, and in all of that time I have seen every negative aspect you can imagine. Cocky athletes, major mistakes by referees, arrogant coaches who think it’s about them, administrators with no backbone, and organizational ignorance from the IHSA. But to this day, there is still only one thing that still burns my butt and makes me want to slap somebody … ignorant parents who think...
COUNTRY Financial Representative Tom Edler is pleased to support the Pearl City Fire Department with a donation of $1,500. The funds will be used to support the department's equipment needs. "Firefighters do so much in our community," said Edler. "Rural fire departments are increasingly resource constrained. My hope is that this donation can help close the gap and support these men and women in their important lifesaving work." COUNTRY Financial has donated more than $5 million since 2020 to...

Why is it that when you blow in your dog’s face he gets mad. But when he’s riding in the car, he sticks his head out the window? The only way to stop a dog from barking in your front yard, is to put him in the backyard. Damn it. My email password got hacked again. So, I have to change my password. That makes it the third time this year I’ve had to rename the cat. My cat doesn’t do touchy feely. He does scratchy bleedy. If Cats ran Disney … “Raindrops on roses and stepping on faces. Cries of disgust when I barf on shoelaces. Scratching...

My household ushered in the beginning of fall this past weekend by “watching” football, or maybe I was half watching and the other half folding laundry, checking my phone and snacking. I did not grow up with a football watching family and only started watching when I got in college because I had some friends who were pretty big football fans. Then when I met my husband, it became a regular fall event. Over the years I’ve begun to pick up on what was happening on the field and gain a bette...

1. Fulton 13 – 3 We give them props and make them #1, and then they have a mediocre tourney. Still a major power. 2. Lena-Winslow 15 - 2 Panthers swept Orangeville and Aquin - with Aquin being the biggie. May be the true #1. 3. Galena 16 - 2 Pirates continue to dominate the West, but this is not the same Galena team of the past - very young. 4. Durand 18 - 3 Bulldogs still crawling back up after loss at home to Aquin, and now they take on Lena-Winslow. 5.
