  • Fulton Firepower

    Dan Stevens|Sep 20, 2023

The Eastland Cougars and Fulton Steamers locked up for their first conference battle, but added a lot of extra "schtick" by also making it their "Pink Out" night to battle cancer. So, with almost identical pink uniforms battling it out on the court, there were times that it wasn't easy telling which team was which because they both stepped up their game to put on quite a show. Fulton is loaded. Make no mistake about it. There is a reason they beat Galena in their opener and pushed Genoa...

  • Cross Country Results

    Sep 20, 2023

Cross Country is still picking up steam in the region among the small schools, but the problem is that you need at least five runners to finish a course and have their scores added together in order to get a team score. But not every team has five runners. The Stockton/Lena-Winslow co-op for example has two boys, both from Le-Win, and two girls, both from Stockton. So, while they cannot get a team score, they can still earn individual honors. Something Ryan Pieper has been doing on a regular...

  • Aggression Pays Off For Pec

    Dan Stevens|Sep 20, 2023

There are several factors that can determine the outcome of a volleyball game. Service errors vs aces, how clean a team plays in avoiding unforced errors, and the biggie – who controls the net with kills and blocks. The last of those three was put on display Thursday night in Orangeville as the Broncos and Indians traded momentum based almost completely on which team was more aggressive at the net. In game one, the Broncos ruled – hammering down 14 kills as a team, with junior Kaylynn O'H...

  • Off And Running

    Dan Stevens|Sep 20, 2023

The Dakota Indians knew they had a tall task ahead of them. Not only were they on the road at Lena-Winslow, but they were also without some starters who were nursing injuries. To their credit, head coach, Eric Didesch, did the only thing he could to try and slow down the Panther juggernaut – he loaded up the box with up to eight or nine defenders at a time to try to slow down the Panther ground game. It didn't work. The problem with loading up the line, is that if and when the runner breaks t...

  • Scoreboards Lie

    Dan Stevens|Sep 20, 2023

Anybody who wasn't at the game between Fulton and Stockton at John O'Boyle Field Friday night who saw the final 40-16 score, would think that Fulton buried the Blackhawks and out-classed them. They would be wrong. The game was not a case of a dominant team beating up on a weak sister. What took place was a game in which Fulton dipped into their bag of tricks to pull away from a resilient Stockton squad that put up a much bigger fight than many people thought they would. Fulton scored right out...

  • EPC No Pushover

    Todd McKenna|Sep 20, 2023

The EPC Wildcatz fought hard and put forth their best effort of the season, but still came up short on the scoreboard 34-20 in Forreston Friday night. Facing the #2 ranked Cardinals on the road is always a difficult assignment, but EPC was up to the task and showed they are growing and improving as a team. Every time Forreston looked to break the game open and run away and hide, the Wildcatz dug deeper and refused to go away as they fought back to keep the game within reach. On any other night playing a team not ranked second in the State,...

  • Weekend Of Winning

    Dan Stevens|Sep 20, 2023

Weekend Volleyball Tournaments allow teams to get a lot of work in to perfect their game - while also providing a chance to measure up and possibly bring home some hardware at the same time. There were several tournaments held last Saturday. In Pearl City, Erie Prophetstown and Marengo were the top two teams to battle it out for first place, but the competition allowed the River Ridge Wildcats a chance to "start over" as it was the first competition they had without senior outside hitter Amie Ri...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Sep 20, 2023

There is no mystery in day to day life quite as exhilarating as the ordinary mailbox. Every day the possibility of something new arrives when the mailman stops at the end of the driveway and drops off the mail. I always thought being a mail carrier would be the best job in the world. You get to see the people on your route every day and you are the one they always look forward to seeing. Growing up, we didn’t necessarily watch and wait for him, but we were excited when we saw the mailman. I r...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Sep 20, 2023

I had it all planned. My wife was leaving with my cousins’ wife for a shopping excursion at an art fair up in Wisconsin over the weekend, and my cousin was scheduled to work Saturday. So, while I knew I needed to cover and/or get results from both the Pearl City and Scales Mound volleyball tournaments – my Saturday night, for the first time in a long time, was going to be open. Now, my schedule typically sucks. So, I rarely have “me time” to go out and enjoy myself. As a special treat, when we f...

  • Lighter Side

    Sep 20, 2023

Fall – when you’re not sure if you should wear winter clothes for the morning, or summer clothes for the afternoon. In the fall, my family likes to play a little game called “How long can we freeze before we turn on the heat for the first time?” I know it may still be 80 degrees outside, but pumpkin spice everything is out and I can wear autumn colors, so Fall la-la-la-la … Fall la-la-la. Sweaters, Hot Cocoa, Walks in the Woods, Falling leaves, Football, Hot Apple Cider, Pumpkins, Chill in the air … In my opinion, there are only two seasons. Fa...

  • Learning About The Grape Industry

    Sep 20, 2023

Students from the River Ridge Horticulture class recently took a field trip to Rocky Waters Vineyard and Winery to explore the science of viticulture. Students had the opportunity to harvest grapes by hand and learn about the grape vines, which can have roots up to 90 feet deep. After experiencing how harvesting was done in the "old days" they got to see how the grape combine worked, a vast improvement over doing it by hand! They then walked through the process of destemming and juicing the...

State Senator Andrew Chesney (R-Freeport) and Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall are pleased to announce that 82 pounds of expired and unused medications were collected at a drug take-back event held in Lena over the weekend. “There is a drug overdose epidemic in this country that demands our attention,” said Chesney. “For our drug take-back event, I partnered with Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall and we helped the people of the 45th District safely dispose of their unused or expired medications. In all, we collected 82 pound...

  • Football Power Ranking

    Sep 20, 2023

Football 1. Lena-Winslow 4 – 0 Another week, another rout. Decatur was supposed to be a tough test, but looks like it won’t be now. 2. Forreston 4 – 0 Cardinals had a battle against an EPC squad that is much better than their record. Now host Thunder. 3. Du/Pec 4 – 0 Rivermen rolled West Carroll, but that’s not impressive. Next up is a trip to Galena and the Pirates. 4. Fulton 2 – 2 Needed a bit of trickery to blow past Stockton, but should not struggle too much at depleted Dakota. 5. Stockton 1 – 3 I know, I know, Galena ios 2-2, but Stoc...
