  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2019

“We be po,” I cried to my wife. “Would you stop it, we are not poor. We’re just cash strapped a little until Friday.” In the grand scheme of things, a perfect storm of financial needs came up all within the last few weeks. Of course we had property taxes which are always so much fun to pay, but then added on top of that were the ever present car payment, mortgage, and then top it off with the monthly necessities like the cell phone bill and cable television bill, not to mention the water and sew...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Sep 18, 2019

When I was in the eighth grade riding the bus to school, my family was the last to get on in the morning and the last to get off in the afternoon. In the morning this meant we only had to ride the bus for about ten minutes, but the afternoon ride home was more than an hour. Few things are more annoying for a rambunctious kid than to have to sit on a school bus for seemingly hours on end every day. It was such a long ride home, that my younger brothers and I decided it was better to walk the 3.2...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Sep 18, 2019

In my last column, I wrote about how priorities matter with limited time the General Assembly is in Session. One of the ways I sought to “practice what I preach” was to spend time this Spring working on several measures to protect vulnerable groups, like senior citizens. I was proud to co-sponsor and support several consumer protections that will help with important problems faced by our senior population in Northwest Illinois. One of those measures was to co-sponsor Public Act 101-264. Thi...

  • Forestry Tour And Sawmill Demonstration

    Sep 18, 2019

The Northwest Illinois Forestry Association will tour Johnson Creek Hardwoods, near Mount Carroll, on Saturday, September 21, from 1:00 until 4:00 pm. For over 20 years, this facility has been producing high quality lumber for craftsmen and woodworkers. Their stock is sourced from two-dozen northwestern Illinois hardwood species in their adjacent woodland. The Johnsons will show their standing timber and will lead a walk through their shop discussing how logs are cut, lumber is dried, and their emphasis on quality. The finished products are...

  • Marked improvement

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2019

Very rarely does an athletic event take place where both teams walked out of the gym feeling good about themselves, but that's exactly what happened Monday night when the Warren Lady Warriors paid a visit to Lanark to challenge Eastland. As game one opened up, Cougar middle hitter, Karlie Krogman, was set up for a big kill in the middle – everybody saw it coming – but so did Warren middle hitter Sydni Sigafus who timed her two handed slap perfectly and opened the match with a strong stuff blo...

  • Houston, She Is A Problem

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2019

If you ran into Forreston senior outside hitter, Alexus Houston on the street, you would be convinced she was a popular girl who probably was in the running for prom queen. But her 5'7" frame would never lead you to believe that she was a pure beast on the volleyball court. Houston had "one of those nights" against Aquin in Freeport Tuesday night as the senior dominated the match in racking up 18 kills in just two games to lead the Cardinals to the 26-24, 25-20 victory. In both games, Aquin...

  • Cougars In The Clutch

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2019

If one needs to wonder why volleyball coaches tend to pull out their hair and suffer from premature aging, one look at Wednesday's battle between Stockton and Eastland in Lanark might explain it. In game one, the Eastland Cougars played a nearly flawless game – committing only three unforced errors in the game as a team, while spreading out their offense with six players recording a kill, while four of them – Addison Burkholder, Karlie Krogman, Dani Rush and Maddy Cropper - all had three kills i...

  • Panthers Survive Momentum Pause

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2019

Let's be honest, ever since their victory over Dakota at home, the Lena-Winslow Panthers had not been playing up to their potential ... in fact, opposing teams were hoping to play them now – before they got back on track. Well ... news flash ... you're too late. "This was so much better than the other night," said head coach Sue Amendt. "You could see more smiles on the court. The pressure is gone. I think they realized we need to just be in the moment and stop worrying about next week, or n...

  • Waterloo Wipe Out

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2019

With most of the local teams either being covered, or not having a quality match up, this past Friday I was going to stop off in Warren to see the new Blackhawk/Warren Warrior co-op take on Waterloo. Weather and field conditions moved the game up to South Wayne, but having gone to East Dubuque to cover games, what difference did the direction make – but I won't lie – I was hoping to see good football, but I wasn't expecting it. The last time we covered a Six Rivers team was several years ago...

  • Bulldogs Keep Pedal Down To Crush Missiles

    Todd McKenna|Sep 18, 2019

With a tough back end of the schedule, the Aquin Bulldogs realized how crucial wins in their first few games would be if they had playoff hopes this season. The results speak for themselves as Aquin has roared out of the gate as the Bulldogs now are 3-0 with a dominating performance in a 42-14 win in Milledgeville Friday night. Aquin overcame a shaky start as they fumbled the opening kickoff and the Missiles recovered the ball deep in Aquin territory. A quick score could have given Milledgeville some much-needed confidence as they have nine...

  • River Ridge Lights Out In Home Opener

    Todd Nielsen|Sep 18, 2019

When the River Ridge Wildcats hosted the Lake Forest Academy Caxys (Ancient Greek for the word "ribbit"- seriously), there wasn't a whole lot of drama. In fact, about the only question to be answered came with two minutes remaining in halftime: When will the lights come back on? The power flashed off and then back on at the school, but the lights needed to cool off for about ten minutes before turning back on. On the field, however, there wasn't much to wonder about. The Wildcats completely exer...

  • Baker's Big Boot

    Dan Stevens|Sep 18, 2019

With just over three minutes remaining in the game, the Orangeville Broncos still held on to their precarious 6-0 lead over the Galena Pirates, but faced a fourth and three at the Pirate 15. "People probably thought I was nuts," admitted head coach Jay Doyle. "But I knew they were keying on Carter and Garrett, and I didn't want to pass." Instead, the Broncos came out of their time out setting up in field goal formation with junior Zach Baker lined up to kick. "Watch the ball, don't jump off side...

  • Now We're Running

    Sep 18, 2019

The Eastland Cougars had competed in local Cross Country meets in recent years, but they always had to do so as individual runners because they simply did not have enough to comprise a team. In Cross Country, the fastest five place finishers for each school are added together to come up with a team score. But if you don't have five runners ... then there was no way to get a team score. But the 2019 Cougars have a full team this season, and in their first race last week in Winnebago, those five...
