  • Here Come The Cougars

    Dan Stevens|Sep 11, 2024

Several area volleyball teams have been getting attention lately as the region looks to see which ones look like contenders this season. But one team flying under the radar is already looking like all the pieces are beginning to fall into place. The Eastland Cougars opened up their home season with a solid 25-16, 25-16 sweep over Dakota. But while the scores were identical, the games were far from it. In game one, Eastland charged ahead early – prompting Dakota to call time out on a kill by T...

  • The Tide Has Turned

    Dan Stevens|Sep 11, 2024

Stockton fans loved to refer to their matches against Lena-Winslow as a rivalry, but in volleyball, that was hard to swallow. I mean, after all, for it to be a rivalry, both teams had to be capable of winning. And the Blackhawks hadn't beaten the Panthers in several years. All of that changed Thursday night in Lena. The Panthers are a solid team, and will only improve over the course of the season, but Stockton simply dominated play in every aspect. At the net, Stockton amassed 23 kills and two...

  • One 'Schlicht' Panther Win

    Dan Stevens|Sep 11, 2024

On their second play from scrimmage, the Lena-Winslow Panthers introduced Fulton to junior speedster Alec Schlichting. Sixty-seven yards later, it was 6-0 Panthers, and only 2:04 of game time had elapsed. The play was a basic element of the Panther playbook, quarterback Kasch Lessman would often hand off the ball to Aiden Wild on a dive, but then after softening up the defense Lessman would fake the handoff to Wild and give it to Schlichting. Fulton had a hard time defending it. The second time...

  • Warhawk Baseball Gets A Facelift

    Sep 11, 2024

Coach Andrew Janecke has received a substantial grant to upgrade the Meridian Park baseball field from a local donor that requests to be anonymous. The entire old complex was removed: the backstop, chain link fence, storage shed, press box and both dugouts. Concrete pads were poured closer to home plate and the dugouts were stripped of their old siding and placed on the pads where metal siding will be added shortly. A permanent chain link was put up from the right field line to center field....

  • Prostate Cancer Fighter & Survivor Breakfast

    Sep 11, 2024

This September marks the 25th anniversary of recognizing National Prostate Awareness Month. Much has changed in the diagnosis and management of prostate cancer these past 25 years but its incidence has not reduced. It remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers with more than a quarter million men diagnosed annually. Nearly 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime with a higher incidence in men with African American heritage or family history of prostate cancer. Unfortunately, there are relatively few...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Sep 11, 2024

FYI - Humpty Dumpty was pushed. My wife and I had the opportunity to spend last weekend in Nashville, Tennessee with our daughter. We made arrangements to stay at an Airbnb. Before we booked, we read the comments section on their website and it was full of nothing but great comments and five-star ratings. Nonetheless, we were a bit skeptical. When we got there, everything was exactly as advertised. Our suite was an upstairs bungalow complete with snacks, water, juice, antiques, and homey-ness....

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Sep 11, 2024

Every once in a while, we will be going through our normal routine when suddenly something comes up that sparks a memory in our hearts. For me, it just happened this past week when a girl I used to date back when I was living in New York City popped back into my head. Her name was Joan Labisi, and she was the best friend of the girl who did the books for the Wall Street head-hunting firm I was working for back in 1986 when I first moved to New York City after graduating college. Now, to be...

  • Pantherhawks Claim Cougar Invite

    Dan Stevens|Sep 11, 2024

Stockton had been running cross country for several seasons, but this year was the first for their new co-op with Lena-Winslow. The Panthers had several boys from their track team looking to get involved in Cross Country, and as luck would have it – the Lena-Winslow Boys make up the entire roster of boys for the new co-op, while Stockton makes up the roster for the girls. Be that as it may, the team just claimed their first meet title by edging past West Carroll for first place of last W...

Adesse is Latin for support. - Ten years ago, in the inaugural year, eight organizations participated in the Daily Drawing co-op fundraiser. Three of the original organizations remain: Caring Community of Elizabeth, East Dubuque Music, and the Pearl City Athletic Boosters. - In the 2nd year of the drawing, the...

  • Lighter Side

    Sep 11, 2024

All the good pick up lines are taken, so … Hi, pleased to meet you. Excuse me, I don’t mean to intrude, but you owe me a drink. Because when I saw you, I dropped mine. I’m going to complain to Spotify for you not being named this week’s hottest single. Do you have a band aid? I just scraped my knees falling for you. Do you like sales? Because if you’re looking for a good one, clothing is 100% off at my place. I thought Happiness started with an ‘H’, but mine starts with ‘U’. Did we go to school together? I swear we had chemistry. • From The Desk Down State

    Andrew Chesney|Sep 11, 2024

As the State Senator representing the 45th District in Northwest Illinois, it is important to me to seek input from my constituents on a regular basis. Several weeks ago I mailed a fall survey to households across the 45th Senate District. The survey was mailed without regard to political affiliation. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, and others received it to ensure accurate results. While the results cannot be considered “scientific,” they do provide an excellent representation of how tho...

  • When Both Teams 'Win'

    Dan Stevens|Sep 11, 2024

The Warren Warriors and Pearl City Wolves came into their non-conference battle on Monday in Pearl City with two very different goals in mind. For the Wolves, it was a trap game. After finishing fifth at the Oregon Tournament, they had arch rival Lena-Winslow coming on Thursday, so ... how do you get motivated to play a team you blew out on day one of the season? And for Warren, the Warriors – who are easily one of the youngest varsity teams anywhere – they were looking for improvement. In game...
