The non-conference volleyball battle between Lena-Winslow and Dakota had just about everything in it with the exception of a third game. But while Dakota was wailing away with Tabytha Toelke, Kaylyn Field, Raven Knox and freshman sensation Abi Schlueter, the Panthers seemed content to tip the ball more than pound it to the floor. "I have no idea why they were tipping so much," said head coach Sue Amendt. "I mean we talked about it before the game of tipping into some areas we thought would be...

What a difference a week makes. In Aquin's opener against the Lena-Winslow Panthers, the Bulldogs struggled to stay in the game as they were blown off the floor in two games. But in their second contest of the year, Wednesday night at Eastland, it was the Bulldogs who completed the sweep over the traditional power in a 25-17, 26-24 slugfest. After both teams rattled off some early points, Aquin claimed the lead as Abby Barr slammed down a kill in the middle, and sophomore Ava Hiveley followed...
So where do you start? Do we highlight the final two point conversion run that came up short in EPC's 36-34 loss to Du/Pec last Friday? Or do we comment on the officials who proved to be human as they had a bad ... no, a really bad night? Or do we talk about the moronic Rivermen fans who proved to all within earshot why they won't win any sportsmanship awards? No, I think we'll begin with a premature celebration by the Rivermen as they were deep in EPC territory, holding a 28-22 lead later in th...
That is what some may call an "attention getter." If they hadn't done so already after last week's win, the Aquin Bulldogs Friday night made the rest of the NUIC conference sit up a little straighter and take notice as they posted another impressive victory 40-22 versus the visiting Stockton Blackhawks at Conley Field in Freeport. With only one quarter in the books, Aquin had rolled to a 20-0 lead before the sun even set. The Bulldogs were intent on establishing a running game after a sub-par...
Coming in to their non-conference battle, nobody who followed area football honestly believed that West Carroll would have an easy time with the powerful Dakota Indians. True, they might pull off the upset, but … this was Dakota – the team that had thwarted West Carroll upset bids before when the Thunder had a better team. But several eyebrows rose in surprise after learning that the Thunder had knocked off Dakota with a convincing 24-12 victory that wasn’t as close as the score. With only 1:03 remaining in the first quarter, Cody Sipe cappe...
I have to make a confession. The guilt has been haunting me for several days now, and while I like to think I lead a good life and do the right things … the torment I have been living with on my conscience is too great and I need to get it off of my chest. I’ve been having an affair. It wasn’t my idea at first, in fact I never even thought of it. My neighbor Ryan started it, and then his wife just came walking right on over into our yard and … well … I guess I could have stopped her. And I know...
Illinois State Trooper Brooke Jones-Story was honored August 30 with the dedication of the Springfield Road Overpass on Route 20 in her honor. The dedication took place inside the Visitors Center – US Route 20 @ Browns Mill Road. After the dedication ceremony, there was a procession westbound on US Route 20 past the Springfield Road Overpass. Trooper Jones-Story was killed in the line of duty March 28 in an accident on US Route 20. The Aug. 30 dedication is one of several public celebrations of...
When the press release came in, letting everyone know that Rebecca Motley had resigned her position as the Director of the Greater Freeport Partnership, there were holes in it that sparked our journalistic interest. An extensive search was done, and we found on the Champaign County Circuit Court website that a recent case had gone through where a judgment of $43,123.39 had been made against Motley in favor of the Center For Community Adaptation LLC. It is important to point out that this was NOT a criminal case. So it seemed to spark more...
A couple of years ago I took my family to a Cubs game at Wrigley Field in Chicago. Chicago is a big city. The population density of Chicago is 11,933 people per square mile. There are 4,524,709 vehicles registered in the state of Illinois. By contrast, the population density of Lafayette County, Wisconsin, where I live, is 26 people per square mile. There are 2,130,000 vehicles registered in the state of Wisconsin. One could say one encounters a vast difference when driving from my home in...

The Dakota Indians were hoping to get a lot of games in at the Oregon Tournament in order to find out what they needed to work on according to head coach Kim Toelke. But when the dust had settled on the day, the team that was only looking for areas to improve in had knocked out all comers in claiming the championship with a sweep over Oregon in the finals. "I still say it all comes down to who is going to make fewer mistakes," coach Toelke said. "We played some nice volleyball at times, but we...
With so many worthwhile nonprofit organizations in the Freeport area trying to raise money, it can be hard to decide which events to support. On any given weekend, multiple nonprofit organizations compete with one another to gain the attention of the public. If only there was a way these groups could coordinate and work together, instead of against each other. Enter “Eats and Beats,” a two-day event being coordinated by over 20 Freeport area nonprofit organizations. The event will feature live music from local and regional bands, as well as...
