    Aug 23, 2023

We'll try to keep this updated as best we can, but not every school's golf team is good about getting us results. So ... for what it's worth, here's what we know. Aug 23, 2023

On August 16th, personnel from the Stephenson County Sheriff's Office, assisted by the Ogle County Sheriff's Office, arrested Daniel Sheets, 37 of Dakota, without incident at a residence in the 100 block of S. Elm Street in Davis Junction, Illinois. The apprehension of Sheets, who was already out on bond for previous charges, was for a Stephenson County felony arrest warrant issued on 8/16-23 for Child Pornography (5 counts) and Unauthorized Videotaping (5 counts), all of which are alleged to...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Aug 23, 2023

Today was the absolute worst day ever And don't try to convince me that There's something good in every day Because when you take a closer look, The world is a pretty evil place, Even if Some goodness does shine through once in a while Satisfaction and happiness don't last And it's not true that It's all in the mind and heart Because True happiness can be obtained Only if one's surroundings are good It's not true that good exists I'm sure you can agree with me, that The reality Creates My...

  • Lighter Side

    Aug 23, 2023

You know when a joke becomes a Dad joke? … When it becomes apparent. Why do you never see elephants hiding in trees? Because they’re so good at it. To the man in the wheelchair who stole my camouflage jacket … you can hide, but you can’t run. Yesterday I ate a clock … it was very time consuming. Especially when I went back for seconds. I was wondering why this frisbee kept looking bigger and bigger … then it hit me. What do you call an alligator in a vest? … An investigator. I have a fear of speed bumps, but I’m slowly getting over it. I also h...

  • And The Beat Goes On

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Covering the Stephenson County Board has gotten to the point of watching live comedy. On some occasions, you simply have to laugh ... in order to avoid crying. The meeting held Thursday, August 17th, was one such meeting. Initially, the meeting was cruising along to the point that you got the impression you might make it home at a reasonable hour, but then the topic of renewing the Health Insurance policies for the County came up – and everything came to a screeching halt. Finance Chairman, T...

  • Fall Sports Volleyball Predictions

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Okay, we've spent a lot of time taking a close look at every team in our coverage area, but how will they all stack up - not only against themselves, but other schools outside of our region? Glad you asked. NUIC SOUTH Forreston ran the table last season, but lost a ton of senior talent. Fulton seems poised to claim the crown, but don't look past Eastland or Forreston as major challengers. The dark horse team will be Polo - with a new coach, the Lady Marcos were a major surprise over the summer,...

  • Fall Sports Warren Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season We could fill you up with all kinds of platitudes about how the 2022 Warren Warriors may not have seen a lot of success on the court, but did see it in areas that are more important - but the bottom line is that nobody (including the Warriors) would buy it. You simply can’t go through a winless season and try to sugarcoat it. The 2022 Warriors never won a match - something that weighed upon them as one player told me while feeling downtrodden, “I just want to win one, is that so muc...

  • Fall Sports Stockton Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season Things went from bad to worse for the Blackhawks in 2022. To begin with, it was a rebuilding year as they had lost the Haas cousins - which was more than 80% of their offense. But then, early in the season, their best weapon - Madalyn Mammoser - went down and was lost (again) as knee issues have tormented her career. The Blackhawks tried to recover, and early in the season things were working pretty well, but at some point it began to erode. A team that was hoping to compete with...

  • Fall Sports Scales Mound Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The 2022 season for the Scales Mound Hornets was a see-saw affair of strong wins and tough losses as a majority of the season was spent trying to find the right pieces to put into each of the many places on the court. An early season smack-down of Milledgeville was followed by some tough losses at the Galena Tournament, and playing in the West proved to be a major challenge as the Pirates ran the table, and West Carroll emerged as a power behind some major stars on the roster who wer...

  • Fall Sports River Ridge Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The magical rise of the River Ridge Wildcat volleyball program hit a new high last season - although it took a while to kick into gear. The regular season was not the 20 wins we thought as the Wildcats had to deal with super-power Galena, as well as a West Carroll squad that had some true stars on it. Add in a couple of head scratching match losses during the season, and the Wildcats - on paper - were just above average at 15-13-3 overall and 7-5 in conference play. But then the post...

  • Fall Sports Pearl City Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season One year after claiming a Regional crown and reaching the Sectional with a squad loaded with senior talent, the 2022 Pearl City Wolves were only a shadow of what had been. With only two seniors remaining from that group, Pearl City was in full rebuild mode, but ... wasn’t taking some of the steps needed in order to groom the young talent on the roster. The end result was a winless 0-12 conference record, and 10-23-2 overall season in which they were swept out of the Regionals in t...

  • Fall Sports Orangeville Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The Broncos struggled out of the gate in 2022, and were saddled with having to compete in what was arguably the strongest conference in the region. With eventual state champion Aquin, along with major powers Dakota, Durand and Lena-Winslow - the conference schedule was brutal. In fact, the Broncos only had two conference wins as they swept Pearl City. And while they took Pecatonica to the limit, they still never beat them as they finished only 2-10 in the conference and 9-19...

  • Fall Sports Lena-Winslow Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The 2022 Lena-Winslow Lady Panthers established themselves as a major power within the dominant NUIC North. They pushed Aquin to a third game - which was incredibly rare - and finished in a three-way 8-4 second place tie with Dakota and Durand when the final North standings were released. In addition, they finished an impressive fourth at the Oregon Tournament, and beat defending state champion St. Thomas More in finishing second at the prestegious Mt. Pulaski Tournament. But best...

  • Fall Sports Eastland Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season Quick question, when was the last time the Eastland Cougars had a losing season. Ever since the program began back in 1986, there have been two constants ... the sun will rise in the East, and Eastland will have a winning record in volleyball. Even in 2017, when the team finished 17-18-4, they went on to win the Regional title, so ... that one doesn’t count. But it’s not a trick question, the 2022 Cougars ended their season at 17-18, falling to Sterling Newman in the Regional sem...

  • Fall Sports Aquin Volleyball

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season Northwest Illinois has seen its fair share of excellent volleyball teams over the years - and many of them were strong enough to make it all the way to the State final four: Galena, Eastland, Lena-Winslow and in 2021 the Aquin Bulldogs made it there too. But even more rare, is to have everything fall into place, and to actually claim the State Championship. Of all the schools in our region, only Eastland was able to do that ... until last year. The 2022 Aquin Bulldogs had all the...

  • Fall Sports Football Predictions

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Now that we've looked at a few teams individually, how do they stack up when compared against each other? Ever since several schools left for the eight man format, or joined a school up in the Six Rivers Conference in Wisconsin, there's now a lot to cover. So, with that in mind, let's look at the Six Rivers first because it is the easiest to break down. The 2023 Six Rivers Conference breaks down more by who can build off of what they did last year, and who is going to be starting over. With that...

  • Fall Sports Benton/Scales Mound Football

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The Knights had an up and down season in 2022. On the bright side, they finished 4-3 in the conference (5-5 overall) and qualified yet again for the Wisconsin post season playoffs. On the down side, they fell to Darlington in the first round of the playoffs 20-7, and when combined with losses to traditional rivals like Blackhawk ... it was not a bad season, just ... not as strong as was hoped. Additions & Subtractions While we always like to look at the new up and coming talent, the...

  • Fall Sports Blackhawk/Warren Football

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The Warhawks returned to dominant football last season, being in the thick of the conference race all year. They finished third with an overall 6-3 record, but once again made it into the post season party and did some damage before finally bowing out in the quarterfinals of the 7A tournament. Additions & Subtractions For the third year in a row, the Warhawks will enter the season with a new quarterback as Reed McNutt was lost to graduation. But, also for the third year in a row,...

  • Fall Sports Orangeville Football

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season After only one year of being in the State Championship game, the Orangeville Broncos fell, and fell hard in 2022 as they lost their star back before the season even started, and limped through a 1-8 season. In most of their contests, they were simply over-matched - especially in terms of speed as Blake Folgate - their top back - also missed time. They did have the offensive explosion against Christian Life, and then ended the year with a shoot-out against River Ridge, but still only...

  • Fall Sports River Ridge Football

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The 2022 season got off to a rough start, and even though the Wildcats put it all together and finished strong with a 4-2 record down the stretch, they just missed making it into the 8-Man football playoffs. The story of the 2022 Wildcats could be summed up as “growing pains” as they had a young squad that got out-classed and pounded by the 8-Man powers (Amboy, Polo and Milledgeville) But, in the end, it was the close losses - like 4 overtimes to South Beloit - that kept them out of...

  • Fall Sports Stockton Football

    Dan Stevens|Aug 23, 2023

Last Season The 2022 season was one mired in turmoil for the Blackhawks. From the opening week pounding they suffered at the hands of the Forreston Cardinals, there simply was never a close game all season long. Stockton was either dominant and overpowering an opponent, or getting dominated and overpowered by one. In the end, a 3-6 mark was not what anybody saw coming, and that sparked even more turmoil off of the field as head coach Matt Leitzen was ... encouraged, to resign, and new head...
