5 Golf teams – including some very big schools – all gathered in Rockford to officially begin the 2024 Fall Sports High School season at the Rockford Jefferson J-Hawk Invitational. The tournament used a two-person, best ball, format. In other words, both players would tee off, but then choose the better of those two shots, and continue this process throughout the tournament. Locally, Freeport competed, as did the NUIC teams from Pecatonica and Stockton. Final team results were: 1 Rockford Guilford 244 2 Rockford Harlem 245 3 Freeport 249 Bel...
A total of ten Boys teams and three Girls teams gathered at Lake Carroll's Golf Course last Saturday for the Eastland Invitational. Eastland also had three girls who competed individually, but you needed four scores to qualify as a team. But the best part of the tournament was that it was comprised almost exclusively of NUIC teams – with only Winnebago not being a part of the conference. So, that gave everyone an early glimpse into which teams might be competing for the conference title. W...

Some people have thought that my coverage of the Freeport City Council has been incredibly harsh. And while I would counter that it has been incredibly accurate – some of them are simply incredibly stupid – Councilman Rachel Simmons proved at the recent Committee of the Whole meeting that she has the potential to be a good elected official. Stacey and Simmons wanted to renew the Pretzel City Skills Enhancement Program. Basically, the program provided local youth a chance to work with a con...
A joke I heard this week: The wedding day was fast approaching. Everything was ready, and nothing could dampen the bride's excitement, not even her parents' nasty divorce. Her mother finally found the perfect dress to wear and would be the best-dressed mother of the bride - ever! A week later, the bride-to-be was horrified to learn her new young stepmother had purchased the same dress. She asked her to exchange it, but she refused, "Absolutely not! I'm going to wear this dress. I'll look like a...
Fall Sports is dominating Dan’s time, so we let him off the hook and are printing an old column of his – we hope you enjoy. “Stevens, you need to do a story on the Blackhawk/Warren football co-op, they’re pretty good.” “I already did. In fact, I’ve done several.” The conversation is not unique, and happens often – but not between me and some reader who doesn’t subscribe to the paper. No, that typical conversation happens on a regular basis between me and my business partner – Terry Whalen! “Do...

Back to school … time to officially begin remembering what day of the week it is. Thank heavens it’s time to go back to school. I don’t think I could take another beautiful summer day of my parents ranting about politics. Sweetie, you have to come out. It’s the first day of school. “No! I refuse to go! They can get someone else to teach my classes.” I’m sorry Kayla, but we don’t all follow you on Twitter. So, please just tell the class what you did last summer. At Freeport's Committee of the Whole meeting last week, Police Chief Shenberger made a special presentation to a couple of officers that was more than worthy of merit.
