Throughout much of Northwest Illinois, business owners tend to be the leaders of their respective communities where they have established a strong reputation as the wise old leaders full of common sense. A quick list of many local business leaders would depict a man – or woman – who worked their way up the ranks, or from within the family, until their turn came to take over. What you don't expect to see, are "Millenials." After all, the typical stereotype of today's young adult is that they are...

You know, I realized the other day just how long I've been doing this job ... Another upcoming season of High School sports is upon us, and I have been running all over shooting Fall Sports pictures and talking to coaches. For a reason I will explain later, I found myself reflecting the other day upon teams and athletes I've seen over the years. With some new volleyball coaches taking over, I find it cool how many of them were former players I used to cover during their championship years. The...
Summer was late arriving this year. Many of the farmers in our area did not yet have all their corn in the ground by June 1. Some were still working around the wet spots in their fields all the way into the third week of June. But that didn't seem to damper the crop's enthusiasm. The seeds sprouted and popped up out of the ground and began to grow with a fervor. I read an article in a farm magazine that said the seed has a way of sensing when it's growing season is short and it "knows" it has...
Timber Lake Playhouse is proud to bring to area audiences a truly unforgettable production full of sass, style and sisterhood. Steel Magnolias, is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming. At Truvy’s beauty shop, the motto is: there’s no such thing as natural beauty—the women are all sass and brass. Through clouds of hairspray and over the buzz of blow dryers, six southern spitfires gather each week to chat and support each other through thick and thin. But those bonds are about to be tested when M’Lynn and her daughter Shelby face a life-ch...
This September, the Apple River Fort State Historic Site will host "Goin' Down the Road: Folk Songs of Illinois, 1818-1960," presented by folk musician Bucky Halker! From the beginning of Illinois statehood through the folk revival that swept the nation in the 1950's, the people who made Illinois their home produced historical ballads recounting floods, tornados, murders, and mining disasters. These ballads allowed communities to remember and pass on their history at a time when newspapers and...
A total of 18 teams – 11 Girls teams and 7 Boys – all made their way to the Lake Carroll Clubhouse Saturday morning to compete in the Eastland Invitational. And although a spitting rain opened the tournament, they were able to complete the 18 hole contest, with last year's reigning state champion in 1A – Marcus Smith of Winnebago – easily out-doing the field to claim first place overall with an impressive score of only 71. In spite of his score, the Fulton team placed four golfers in the top...
There are so many issues in Springfield that Democrats and Republicans are on polar-opposite viewpoints. Tax policies, how to keep businesses in Illinois, how to keep people in Illinois, how to improve our economy for a better future— all very different ideas between the two parties in Illinois. However, there are also those issues that provide rare, hopeful moments of bipartisan progress. One of those issues is enforcement of roadway safety surrounding protection of our law enforcement, e...
