Fall sports are rapidly approaching, and the one fact I can present that I doubt anybody would even think about challenging, is that football in this region of Illinois is taken pretty seriously. We've got the reigning 1A state champion in Lena-Winslow, and if you wanted to do the research – guess how many years you would have to go back to find a season in which nobody from the NUIC claimed a state title? (We'll get back to that) But when it comes to Highland Community College ... there's no p...
About a year ago, we did the story about how the Stephenson County Board was raising fees for liquor licenses to bars and restaurants throughout the county, and how the extreme increase caused a major reaction from owners of those establishments. Well, it would seem that the Finance Committee has yet to get the point that an increase is one thing, but an enormous increase in fees creates a wave of anger and resentment. As part of the study the County performed regarding fees, the latest one the...

On October 1st of this year, residents of Lena are going to see an increase in their water bill. At last week’s Board meeting the Village Board approved the measure unanimously. But the reasoning behind the increases make perfect sense. “Water rates have not changed in nearly a decade. Sewer rates have changed once in about the same amount of time. Inflation over this time has increased the costs of everything. Meanwhile the water/sewer infrastructure continues to get older and less rel...
He knew everything, but that’s all he knew. I kind of left you hanging on the house we were working on in anticipation of members of our family moving in. I’m happy to say, they are all moved in. The house had a total inside makeover and is the happy home of their little family. I took it upon myself to find a little history on the previous owners. What I discovered was that the owner before them, was born in the house. He and his wife had four children. She was the girl next door and they end...
There is a Gremlin in our house. Ever since the girls left for college, it hasn’t been hard placing blame when lights in the house are left on, or doors left open, or certain food items you wee saving in the refrigerator to eat later suddenly went missing. Or at least that’s what we thought at first. It was amazing how much money my wife and I saved on water bills, electricity, and the need to buy paper towels and toilet paper. So even though we had massive tuition bills to pay coming from Mad...

You know when a joke becomes a Dad joke? ... When it becomes apparent. Why do you never see elephants hiding in trees? Because they're so good at it. To the man in the wheelchair who stole my camouflage jacket ... you can hide, but you can't run. Yesterday I ate a clock ... it was very time consuming. Especially when I went back for seconds. I was wondering why this frisbee kept looking bigger and bigger ... then it hit me. What do you call an alligator in a vest? ... An investigator. I have a fear of speed bumps, but I'm slowly getting over...

It is now official, The Eastland Invitational brought 12 Schools together in Lake Carroll to open up the IHSA Fall Season with the first event of the year. For the Boys, Rockford Christian pulled away for the comfortable victory, but both Galena and Fulton showed a lot of strength in claiming second and third respectively (with only a single stroke separating them) which should make for an interesting conference race between the two. For the Girls, the bigger schools dominated as Oregon and...
Nearly every county in Illinois lost population over the past decade, mirroring a national trend of greater concentrations of people leaving rural areas and moving to larger metropolitan areas. That's according to the latest numbers released Thursday, Aug. 12, by the U.S. Census Bureau showing detailed population numbers from the 2020 census for cities, counties and small geographic areas. In April, the Census Bureau released statewide numbers that determine how many congressional seats and Elec...
