  • One Man's Opinion

    Jim Sacia|Aug 17, 2022

In my quest to send out timely topics, I love it when I find something said that is so much better than anything I could come up with. You would be hard pressed not to love these: Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago. Capone wasn’t famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze, and prostitution to murder. Capone had a lawyer nicknamed “Easy Eddie”. He was Capone’s lawyer for a good reason. Eddie was very good!! In fact...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Aug 17, 2022

Everybody messes up from time to time. One time when I was a kid working on the farm, Dad decided to sell some grain. The guy came out with a semi and parked it under the auger and started loading. The auger was only a six inch auger so loading the truck took a long time. After getting everything set and the grain flowing, the driver sat inside the truck and fell asleep. He must have been really tired because by the time he woke up, the truck had overflowed. It wasn’t a small mess, it was a h...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Aug 17, 2022

I’ve been in a bit of a quandary this week in regard to what my column would be about. I mean, I had originally planned on sharing another embarrassing camping story, but then all the rains came. Like many people throughout the region, my wife and I had a ton to deal with. Living on the south side of Lena, she even got a video of the water backing up from our storm drain and running into the sump pump that simply couldn’t keep up. While Sunday morning was bad, Monday morning was much worse – a...

  • Magical Performance Missed

    Dan Stevens|Aug 17, 2022

I'll be honest, I have never liked the musical "Working" by Stephen Schwartz, and if the truth be told – he knows it, because I told him so when I worked with him back during my New York days. The problem, as I saw it, was that – because there is no plot-line, it is simply a collection of songs and monologues that celebrated the workers of the world – there is no way for any performer to "steal" the show. But Friday night at Highland College, I was proven wrong. First of all, some major kudos...

  • Lighter Side

    Aug 17, 2022

I tried to sue the airport for losing my luggage … I lost my case. I couldn’t figure out why the baseball was getting larger … then it hit me. What’s the best part about living in Switzerland? I’m not sure, but the flag’s a big plus. I wonder if Chinese tourists get angry when they buy a souvenir from America, only to find out it was made in China. Please keep making excuses for your kid’s bad behavior. It really seems to be working out well for you. A teenager is a person who is ready for the zombie apocalypse, but not ready for the midterm m...

  • Pirates Shine At Eastland invite

    Dan Stevens|Aug 17, 2022

The weather was far from ideal, but while the sun had a hard time poking through the clouds, the Galena Pirates didn't care as they established themselves early on as the team to beat in the NUIC this season by claiming first place. Five golfers were needed to have their scores added together in order to claim a team score, and in the Boy's Meet, seven of the nine teams were able to compete for team honors, while LW/PC and Polo had less than five golfers, so they competed individually. When the...

The medications will be disposed of in a safe manner and is just one step in the fight against opioid abuse. Many people don’t know how to get rid of unwanted prescriptions. They flush them down the toilet, pour them down the drain or put them in the trash. More often than not, they simply s...
