Timber Lake Playhouse brings the classic board game and motion picture to life with Clue: On Stage, at the Playhouse, August 1 through 11. When their host turns up dead, they all become suspects. Led by Wadsworth, the butler, Miss Scarlet, Professor...
What is the difference between a true democracy and a constitutional republic? By definition, a republic is a representative form of government that is ruled according to a charter, or constitution, and a democracy is a government that is ruled according to the will of the majority. Although these forms of government are often confused, they are quite different. In a democracy, the people periodically, by majority, vote at the poll to select rulers. The rulers then have absolute power by...
We all need that certain “get away” - you know, the place where we go to recharge our batteries, reward ourselves for getting through another year of working, and go somewhere far from the daily grind to get away from it all. For me - that’s Vegas - and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my four days - even if the temperatures out there were 115 degrees each day. But I realized something - while I truly love going places - New York, Vegas, Cruises, etc - what I really hate is getting there. Here...

We've all seen them. You're driving down a country road, and suddenly above you is a bright yellow airplane flying low. We call them crop-dusters, even though I found out the name no longer applies. But, why are they all yellow? Is that an aviation requirement because of how low they fly? And what kind of license or regulation do they have to go through? Can any pilot do it? As the questions piled up, I realized I was already working on a story. First, the facts: Crop dusting aircraft are either...

The most amazing thing about the sport of curling, is that each country is able to find two men who can work a broom. Suntanning is not an Olympic sport, because the best you can get is bronze. Never forget that Australia’s first ever winter Olympic gold medal was won in speed skating by a guy who was dead last, and everyone in front of him fell down – true story! The 400 meter dash for people who never listen, forces them to run with scissors. I look forward to watching the Olympics and fooling myself into believing I could do better. The 2024...
This week is the IHSA's annual "No Contact" week where coaches and players are not allowed to work on their respective sports as they get ready for the first official day of practice which is this Monday, August 12th. But that allowed everyone to finish their summer schedules last week, and everyone made sure to take advantage of that. In football, Lena-Winslow made a trip to Byron where they scrimmaged against both the Tigers as well as the 5A Sycamore Spartans – and I was there to see them i...
After only a week, we’ve already got a good race going as several readers have emailed, or mailed in their Top Ten lists for places to eat Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. So, we figured we’d give you an update on the race – even though the voting will continue until August 16th. The majority of “voters” are only listing places for dinner – so we think that contest is the most legitimate so far. Hopefully, we’ll get more lunch and breakfast lists in so those races become “valid” in our eyes. (Whe...
One of my favorite things about late summer is the availability of delicious fresh sweet corn. Some of you may remember from past columns that corn is one of my favorite foods, and I especially love fresh sweet corn. With that in mind I wanted to share a few facts on corn. There are three primary kinds of corn. Sweet Corn: This is the kind we eat. You may even grow it in your own garden. Field Corn: Field corn is also known as dent or feed corn. It is hard on the outside and starchy in the...
