  • Wire's Words 'Cleave' The Board

    Dan Stevens|Jul 29, 2020

We've all put our foot in our mouths, or had something we meant to say come out completely wrong, but when you happen to hold public office and do it at a public meeting ... the ramifications can be catastrophic. In a meeting of the Stephenson County Administration & Legal Affairs Committee that convened on July 8th, 2020, a discussion occurred concerning the possible removal of a personnel policy for Stephenson County employees. During this important discussion, Board Member, Alvin Wire...

Day 7 of quarantine: Struck up a conversation with a spider today. Seems nice. He's a web designer. You know, all these people who said we should shut down everything because of climate change are probably the same people protesting on the steps of the state capital screaming at the government to open up the bars. I'm so old, I can remember going through a whole day without taking a photo of anything. A side effect of the quarantine is that it's really hard to end phone calls. Twice today I almost said, "OK, I have to run," before realizing the...

  • Preachers Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jul 29, 2020

Windshields and Bugs - This time of year it’s practically impossible to keep your windshield clean of splattered up dead bugs. The gas station squeegee is just not enough to keep up. So I came up with a plan - I put some windshield washer fluid in a five gallon bucket and added some water and set it next to the wall in the garage where I park my truck everyday. Now, when I pull into the garage and get out of my truck, I simply take the squeegee sponge and scrub the windshield. It’s amazing how...

  • Powerful Future Awaits

    Dan Stevens|Jul 29, 2020

Elaina Martin of Warren is only going to be a sophomore this coming year, but she already made a name for herself athletically by seeing plenty of varsity action as a freshman for the Warriors. Last week, during the Freeport Summer Softball League, she was one of several incoming sophomores who put on a private show for their fans. With two on and two outs against Pearl City, Martin stepped into the batter's box and worked the count to 2-2 when the next pitch was hammered. As the ball sailed...

As one who scribbles largely about things Illinois, I feel almost obligated to observe on the bombshell (certainly for the small fraternity that follows Illinois politics) news that utility ComEd has agreed to pay a $200 million fine for bribery of Illinois officials. The announcement by the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago identifies Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan as the ultimate object of the bribery. While the pandemic has canceled events, torpedoed our economy, and is causing some severe depression as separation anxiety has become a very real medical issue – especially among the elderly – the Covid-19 Pandemic has also expanded our vocabulary as the Urban Dictionary recently added a new term – Maskhole. Maskhole - Selfish idiots in my neighborhood who think that they don't need to wear a mask because the rest of us do. Example: "A maskhole jogged right past me in the park today." Not weari...
