  • Titanic Stretches Abilities

    Dan Stevens|Jul 24, 2019

There are a couple of ways of looking at Highland College's Summerset 46 production of the musical 'Titanic.' On the one hand, it gathered some of the best talent from the region and challenged them with a difficult musical score, while also including an impressive technical side to the production. But on the other, the script itself didn't allow the show to maximize the talent on stage. Let's start with the technical side, which was impressive. Highland used a single set comprised of a raised...

  • The Best To Ever Blow A Whistle

    Dan Stevens|Jul 24, 2019

Northwest Illinois has always been in love with football, and the men who lead our area High School athletes out onto the field each year are often held up to unwarranted criticism, or undeserved praise, as they become the focal point of every coffee house conversation from Orangeville to East Dubuque. Trying to judge the best coaches our region has seen over the years was a monumental task because ... coaching styles and talents are often different. Some coaches are excellent at preparing...

  • Le-Aqua-Na To Get Multi-Million Dollar Makeover

    Dan Stevens|Jul 24, 2019

Residents of Lena have seen the slow deterioration of Lake Le Aqua Na as the routine dredging and funds needed to maintain it correctly were either missing, or being argued about in Springfield. So when word came at the recent Lena Economic Development Legislative Update Meeting that Le Aqua Na was a major project on the DNR's schedule – it was massive news. As presented by George S. Bellovics, Regional Landscape Architect for the DNR, Lake Le Aqua Na is scheduled for a gigantic - $5+ million d...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jul 24, 2019

OK, at the risk of embarrassing people who don't deserve it, let me begin by saying that the names have been changed in the following story to protect the guilty. Now, with that being said ... I came to a pretty obvious conclusion recently. The easiest way to get a man to revert back to his days as a wide eyed ten year old kid with a big grin and runny nose, is to take him into a fireworks store. Now, I'm not talking about the wanna-be tent displays you have in the area where all you can buy are...

  • The State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney, Illinois State Representative|Jul 24, 2019

I talk a lot with constituents in our district about "Northwest Illinois Values." Often, when I use this term, I get questions. In society these days, whenever anyone tries to say that there are "shared values", the very concept is often met with skepticism. While it's certainly true that there are "values" that are not as widely shared by everyone else in our region, I contest that there are some "shared values" that we can almost ALL agree on. I believe that we should talk more about those...

  • The Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak, Minister - Martintown Church|Jul 24, 2019

"It's been a long time," the caller on the other end of the line said, "but when I was a kid, my grandmother took me to Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at Martintown Church. I heard all the stories, from the creation of the world, to Noah and the Ark, to Daniel in the Lion's Den, to the baby Jesus, to the crucified Jesus, to the risen Jesus. But I don't know what happened, because somewhere between the ages of 15 and 48, whiskey became my god. I don't like it. I want to come back. (long...
