  • One Man's Opinion

    Jim Sacia|Jul 22, 2020

Having had the honor and privilege of serving thirty years in law enforcement, I have often reflected on the amazing changes that occurred throughout that time. Changes not only in the law enforcement community but how law enforcement is and has been perceived throughout those many years. Recalling a situation in Rockford, shortly after my transfer here as a young FBI Agent in 1970. My then young bride, Jenny, was perplexed when a crime against a police officer was responded to with nearly unbel...

  • The Lighter Side

    Jul 22, 2020

Sometimes I like to be alone with my thoughts doing absolutely nothing. It's not that I'm antisocial, I'm just pro-me. Do not take life too seriously ... you will never get out of it alive. My goal this weekend is to move just enough so my wife knows I'm not dead. If I had ten chocolate chip cookies, and you took half of them, do you know what you'd have? That's right, a black eye and broken fingers. Life is hard ... but it's a lot harder if you're stupid. If Cinderella's glass slipper fit perfectly, then why did it fall off? I get paid to be...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jul 22, 2020

You don’t need me to tell you that these are difficult days in our country. After years in which many had hoped for progress, anger and violence over race and other issues have reached new intensity. Someone said to me recently that she could not remember a time in her entire life when so many people were so angry so much of the time. The coronavirus - stoked by politics and fear - refuses to subside. It is not shocking or untruthful for me to say that the fear of an untimely death has g...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jul 22, 2020

This is a column. By definition, that means that this is an opinion … not a factual story, but what I – as the author - “think”. I really need to point that out before getting started. And even though I’m doing that, it’s a safe bet that at some point someone will pass the word, “I know it’s true because Stevens said …” ya-da, ya-da, ya-da. Now, with all of that being said … here goes … I don’t think we will see High School football this season. I know that’s rather harsh and I could have led up...

  • Back To School Challenge

    Dan Stevens|Jul 22, 2020

The date is set for students to return to school in Illinois, and every school within our coverage area will be back in session by August 19th, but exactly what form of teaching that will include varies greatly, and is still far from certain. You could check every single school district's website, and on each and every one you would find the same response in regard to returning during Covid-19: "The health of our staff and students is a primary concern of our district. At this time,...

  • ComEd's Bribery Admission Implicates Madigan

    Capital News Network|Jul 22, 2020

Hours after filing a court document implicating – but not charging – Illinois' House Speaker Michael Madigan in a yearslong bribery scheme, federal officials took to the courtyard of the Dirksen Federal Building in Chicago on Friday to deliver a message to those engaging in public corruption: "We will find you too." The charges in the document filed Friday are officially against Commonwealth Edison, Illinois' largest electric utility company, which has agreed to pay $200 million and to con...

Most people never noticed, but due to the Coronavirus, Illinois relaxed the steps necessary to get your name on the ballot in a political race, and John Cook of Freeport took advantage by collecting signatures and following the requirements in order to challenge Andrew Chesney for the 89th District State Representative office in the upcoming November election. “I was collecting signatures in an effort to be on the ballot, but I won't form a PAC until I know my petitions have withstood any o...

  • Buske's Untold Story

    Dan Stevens|Jul 22, 2020

Covering local athletes and celebrating their exploits is always rewarding, but quite often we never learn the story behind the athlete, or what they went through or had to overcome in their lives to get to that point. So when we were notified about how Garrett Buske, a recent graduate of Stockton High School, had been chosen to represent the Chicago region in a special Shriner's Hospital PGA Golf event ... to say our jaws dropped would be an understatement. Garrett, 18, a patient at Shriners Ho...
