  • You Make The Difference

    Dan Stevens|Jul 15, 2020

Yes, there have been government programs like PPP, and locally generated grants to help businesses get through this whole pandemic – we understand that. But if you talk to any business owner, they will be quick to point out that what is helping them survive this who situation are their customers. Throughout this week's issue, you will see a host of ads from businesses that all carry a very similar message – "thank you". And you need to understand, those sentiments are very real – so much so, t...

  • The Lighter Side

    Jul 15, 2020

If anyone needs a ride to 2021, I'm leaving tomorrow. The next time a stranger talks to you when you're alone, just look at them shocked and whisper, "You can see me?" Be careful when you follow the Masses. Sometimes the "M" is silent. I don't understand why they are having so many delays in testing. The whole country would be tested by midnight if Chick-fil-A was running the drive thru test centers. You know that tingly little feeling you get when you like someone? That's just your common sense leaving your body. People say nothing is...

  • Switching Seasons Is Not A Good Option

    Dan Stevens|Jul 15, 2020

The rumors were flying recently when the IHSA suddenly changed their policy regarding the Phase 4 opening requirements, and when the Governor of Michigan openly suggested it – the idea gained some serious weight – switching the Fall and Spring sports seasons so that High Schools play softball, baseball and track along with golf in the Fall, and hold football and volleyball until the Spring. On the surface, it makes sense. By its' own admission, the IHSA has declared baseball and softball, "sa...

  • Something Worth Watching

    Dan Stevens|Jul 15, 2020

The Pandemic had placed everything on hold, and many people were actually trying to remember the last local high school sporting event they had seen. But last Wednesday night in Freeport, the blackout was lifted – for most – as several area teams gathered at Reed Park in Freeport to open up summer league softball play. Of the teams initially expected to participate, Forreston – from what we were told – did not get permission from their school board, so the Orangeville JV Broncos filled that op...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jul 15, 2020

“They behaved like men wielding axes to cut through a thicket of trees,” (Psalms 74:5). A couple of years ago my wife found me a new office desk on Craigslist. She negotiated the price and got it down to what she considered to be a good deal and then sent my son and I to pick it up. It’s huge. It took a pickup truck and a trailer to bring all the pieces that went with it home. It has plenty of drawers and includes another completely separate piece of furniture with compartments and drawers as we...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jul 15, 2020

We’ve all got it – some more than others. My dad used to refer to it as having a little “pee and vinegar” in you, while others refer to the “devil on their shoulder”. But whatever it is, every once in a while we are tempted to do something that might be a little “naughty” but feels like it is going to be well worth the effort. Now, for me, I think of it as my “comedy meter”. Every once in a while, a situation arises that is simply too good to pass up – because I can see the potential humor i...

  • Capital Recap

    Capital News Network|Jul 15, 2020

Days after the governor donated $51.5 million of his personal fortune to a committee supporting a graduated income tax constitutional amendment, a new coalition has begun an effort to defeat the measure.
