  • You Can't Fix Stupid

    Dan Stevens|Jun 19, 2024

Let me ask you something, if you had been told before you decided to run for office, that if you won it would mean doing work on Saturdays in order to prepare for the Monday meetings, would you have the intestinal fortitude to complain about it, and try to change the entire system? During last week’s Freeport City COW (Committee of the Whole) meeting, Alderman Cecelia Stacy and Rachel Simmons put forth a discussion that asked for the Agenda for the Monday meetings to come out before late F...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jun 19, 2024

There was a moment when Moses had the nerve to ask God what His name is. God was gracious enough to answer, and the name He gave is recorded in the original Hebrew as YHWH. In order to pronounce it we added the vowels A and an E to get YAHWEH, presumably because we have a preference for vowels but scholars and rabbis have noted that the letters YHWH represent breathing sounds or aspirated consonants. When pronounced without intervening vowels, it actually sounds like breathing. YH (inhale) WH...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jun 19, 2024

People ask me why I love going to all of the High School sports contests all the time. When taken as a whole, it does seem rather exhausting. Driving to the four corners of our region to watch a battle between Scales Mound and Warren, then staying up late at night making sure the story is written on the internet, then getting up the next day knowing that I will repeat the process yet again once the sun begins to go down. Friday nights in the Fall are the most hectic - I try and get to at least...

  • Lighter Side

    Jun 19, 2024

I’m one of those people who will ask what’s for dinner while eating lunch. Don’t judge me, I love food. If I share my food with you, it’s either because I love you a lot, or because it fell on the floor and I don’t want it. I can usually come up with two good ideas for dinner. But seven nights a week? Come On! Beer! It’s what’s for dinner. My cooking is so fabulous, even the smoke alarm cheers me on. I always cook with wine … sometimes, I even add it to the food. I’m a second hand vegetarian. Cow eats grass, I eat cow. What do you mean I can...

  • Fat Guys With Forks

    Dan Stevens|Jun 19, 2024

China Buffet A Fat Guy Favorite In all honesty, the plan was to restart the Fat Guys. With Forks restaurant reviews at Cimmino's Pizza for their pasta buffet. I mean, it's listed on their menu, and when we had tried it before, it rocked. But upon entry, we found out the hard way that the staff had no idea what buffet we were talking about, so ... off to China Buffet. I would be the first one to admit that the Pandemic hit area restaurants hard, and the China Buffet was no different. For a long...

  • Battle Of The Apple River Fort

    Jun 19, 2024

This year marks the 192nd anniversary of the Battle of the Apple River Fort. In the spring of 1832, Black Hawk led over a thousand of Sauk and Fox warriors and civilians back into Illinois to try and reclaim their lands. His return caused a panic, and settlers across northwestern Illinois and southern Wisconsin began to build small forts to defend themselves-one such fort was built at the Apple River Settlement, now Elizabeth, IL. On June 24, 1832, the Apple River Fort was attacked by two...
