  • Three In A Row

    Dan Stevens|Jun 16, 2021

It had been a chant the Orangeville Broncos used throughout the post season as the goal was simple – for the third time, advance on to the Super Sectional. And while Pearl City made a huge hurdle to overcome, thanks to some key hits, taking advantage of a Wolf weakness, and keeping their composure when their coach couldn't, the goal was realized Thursday in Pearl City as Orangeville escaped with a 4-3 victory to claim the Sectional title for the third year in a row. The biggest hurdle to overcom...

  • Ty As They Might

    Dan Stevens|Jun 16, 2021

Ever since the pitch count rule came into effect several years ago, the biggest factor that can determine the outcome of any High School baseball game is – who is on the mound. Every team tries to line up their "ace" for the bigger tests, while trying to use other pitchers on staff to get past what is seen as a weaker opponent. But in the post season ... there often aren't any weak opponents after the first round, so how the pitching staff stacks up makes a monumental impact. That was the c...

  • Safe Haven Expands Pet Food Donations

    Jun 16, 2021

The Safe Haven Humane Society in Elizabeth, IL is pleased to announce that it has expanded its donations of dog and cat food to 4 area food banks. Safe Haven began this program in 2018 as a way to help keep local animals in their homes and out of shelters by providing free meals. Not surprisingly, the demand over the past year has increased and gallon size zip lock bags of both cat and dog dry food have become staples at food banks in Elizabeth, Galena, Stockton, and most recently, Hanover. “Safe Haven’s pet food bank aligns with our mis...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jun 16, 2021

We’re remodeling a house. By remodeling I mean, getting it ready to move into. Last week the story was about changing the pump in the well and successfully getting life-giving water to the house. The house has sat empty for a few years. Exactly how many years, no one seems to know, although I know someone knows. This week, the story continues. You may or may not be aware of the fact that the housing market is somewhat crazy right now. If you have a house to sell, I suggest you list it as soon a...

  • Post Pour Output

    Dan Stevens|Jun 16, 2021

Fans had to wait a while longer than expected to see the Orangeville Lady Broncos take on Dakota in the Regional final at Orangeville last Tuesday. When the game opened, Dakota drew first blood as the Broncos seemed a bit off-kilter after Tabytha Toelke stole second base after knocking in the first run of the game. With the sun beating down, and several clouds in the sky, what began as a slight lightning delay turned into an hour long rain delay as the sky opened up and it poured down on the...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jun 16, 2021

Just when you thought things couldn’t get any more crazy … they do. OK, I’m not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but I held the power of attorney for my mother, and was also the executor of her will, even though I am the youngest of her three children. Originally, my older brother held those duties, but when he was overseas working as an engineering contractor in Iraq, she switched it to me because nobody knew when he might be back in the states. Later, after he did return, he suffered a strok...

  • One Fateful Swing

    Dan Stevens|Jun 16, 2021

Warren/Stockton senior Matthew Riedl, and Orangeville's Cade Janecke have been friends for several years. With both of them being exceptional baseball players, they have played together and against each other throughout their lives in Summer Ball, and of course when playing for their respective school's teams. Once again, they squared off against each other as the Broncos and Warhawks met for the Regional championship last week in Warren. And after an error put the Warhawk leadoff hitter on base...

  • Next Stop State

    Jun 16, 2021

The Boys Track Sectionals were held last Friday in Winnebago, but unlike previous years where the IHSA had set cut off marks that determined whether or not an athlete qualified for State, the 2021 results did not include that in the posting. The point being, that there might be more area State qualifiers than what are listed here. All we could do was report the area conference athletes who finished in the top three in their respective events. Regardless of that, Forreston dominated the individual events, while Lena-Winslow’s 4x800 relay team a...

  • Neighbor vs Neighbor

    Dan Stevens|Jun 16, 2021

Murmurs about a major upheaval at Adkins Energy have been swirling for weeks, and multiple sources requested we look into the "termination" of Adkins' General Manager, Ray Baker. It is important to point out that in any situation like this, while we have multiple sources that offered plenty of insight, we will never be privy to all of the information involved, and often let things run their course first, before reporting on what happened afterwards. This is especially true in this case – w...

  • The Lighter Side

    Jun 16, 2021

It's been so hot this June, everybody's common sense about what to keep covered has totally evaporated. A heat wave? In the summer? But that NEVER happens! Except every year. At this exact time, since forever. Summer heat is proof that Mother Nature is Menopausal. I'm pretty sure the heat index today is somewhere between boob sweat and Satan's anus. This heat wave is brutal! Not only is it hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, but you can use your mailbox as a toaster oven. It's summer time, but of course you'd never know it with all the...

  • Lake Le-Aqua-Na To Open In September

    Dan Stevens|Jun 16, 2021

People making the mistake of ignoring the signs and trying to enter into Lake Le-Aqua-Na are typically met with a rather rude response – along with the threat of getting a ticket if caught a second time ... but when you have a press pass and a camera ... the anger tends to turn into a more cooperative update of where things stand. While there had been rumors that Lake Le-Aqua-Na might open in July, those were just that – rumors – and proven false by the State Officials I ran into (admi...

  • Krogman Caps Career

    Jun 16, 2021

The true joy of being a local newspaper that covers area sports, is seeing athletes come in as wide-eyed freshman, and develop over the course of their four years into super star athletes. While many area kids fall into that category, Karlie Krogman of Eastland was one of those rare multi-sport stars who excelled at everything she did – a volleyball middle hitter who led her team in kills, a basketball post who has a state championship title under her belt, and this year she was able to be both...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|Jun 16, 2021

You’d be hard-pressed to find a coach of any sport who will not echo the sentiment, “nothing good ever happens after midnight.” Doing anything in the wee hours of the morning is usually not a good idea. Coaches know that the phone calls they get after midnight are a harbinger of a bad day to come. Usually someone’s been arrested, been in an accident, or been in a fight. When it comes to legislating after midnight, it is usually the harbinger of really bad days to come. But, unfortu...
