  • Extra Inning Excitement

    Dan Stevens|Jun 9, 2021

The two youngest softball teams squared off in the first round at Lena's Dodds Park Wednesday evening as the SM/RR Hornets came to town to challenge the Panthers, but this one took longer than seven innings to decide. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Panthers had the bases loaded against Hornet ace Mikayla Bass, and freshman Kyah White was fouling off pitches to preserve the 2-2 count. "I thought when my team called time out and came out and talked to me, that settled me...

  • Panther Pounding

    Dan Stevens|Jun 9, 2021

Drew Streckwald only threw four innings against South Beloit in the Lena-Winslow Panther's Regional opener, but he still got the complete game victory – allowing only two hits while striking out seven (including five of the last six batters he faced). It would have been nice to see him pitch longer, but the Panther offense wouldn't let that happen as Lena-Winslow blasted out 17 hits, while taking advantage of six Sobo errors as they spent more time running around the bases than covering them o...

  • The Wright Stuff

    Dan Stevens|Jun 9, 2021

Sydney Wright has always been a solid addition to every Pearl City team she has played on, but is typically not the "star". But that all changed Thursday in Pearl City. The Wolves were in a dogfight with Stockton/Warren as the Warhawks held a no-hitter through 3 and 2/3 innings, as Lauren Kehl was actually out-dueling Pearl City's Cheyenne Handsaker early on. In the top of the third inning, Elaina Martin stepped into the box against Handsaker, who had only given up a first inning single, and had...

  • Rockin' The Schoolhouse

    Dan Stevens|Jun 9, 2021

Yes, it was late in the season, and four of the seven cast members had already graduated, but EPC was able to "shift" their productions around to put on a really nice production of Schoolhouse Rock last weekend. And I, for one, am thankful for it. EPC is blessed with a ton of truly talented kids – and many of them never got to put on their final performance when everything got cancelled last year. But thankfully, Mikayla Milam, Torey Leverton, Miranda Mellentine and Makayla Ruttman – who hav...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Jun 9, 2021

Moving water is fascinating. Creeks gurgle, waterfalls plummet, springs bubble, ocean tides crash. The bubbles, foam and noise draws us. The water sustains us. We need water for our physical life, but it also somehow soothes our spirit. We’ve been helping our son and daughter-in-law get a vacant house ready to be moved into. It’s a beautiful structure that has been empty for several years. It just needs someone to live in it and make it home again. A little cleaning, paint, and TLC makes all...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Jun 9, 2021

No matter how careful we are, and what precautions we take, it is bound to happen … you are going to have one of “those” days. Even though my car is the “newest” one in the family – it stays outside on the driveway – and for good reason. “You treat your car like crap!” Now, admittedly, it is not a car for me – it is my mobile office. So the floor of the front passenger seat makes for the perfect waste basket. (I mean, I wouldn’t want to litter.) On a routine basis I clean it out, but that entail...

  • The Lighter Side

    Jun 9, 2021

I'm going to change my Facebook name to "Benefits". Now when someone adds me as a friend it will say "You are now friends with Benefits." Being popular on Facebook is like sitting at the cool table in the cafeteria of a mental hospital. Privacy Settings 101: If it's on Facebook ... it's NOT private. May changing your Facebook relationship status as an April Fool's joke not cause the end of your relationship. I was feeling really down because of the economy, my job, my wife leaving me, and my dog dying ... it was so bad I called the Suicide...

  • Is It Janecke Or Janeckrush?

    Dan Stevens|Jun 9, 2021

The changeup has been an effective pitch in area softball. So much so, that most batters deliberately lay off of it when they see it coming. Not only does it throw off a hitter's timing, but it's coming in so slow that even when people do hit it, they end up with lazy fly balls on the infield, or a slow roller back to the pitcher. Most pitchers, however, struggle throwing a changeup for strikes. So the strategy is to let it go past, take the ball, and wait for something better to try and hit....
