Dear Editor; It seems to me that the word ‘community’ has been left out of HCC’s men’s athletic teams. The basketball and baseball teams only have players from out of district, out of state, and possibly out of country. Why are local high school athletes not recruited for these teams? We have many good players within the Highland District. I am sure that parents, grandparents and friends would love to see these young people have a chance to participate. I just got my property tax bill and that makes me think that someday HCC may want to put...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|May 22, 2024

Disclaimer: Today’s column may emote strong emotions from friend and foe alike. Read at your own discretion. The other day I saw a news clip where our President was making fun of pro-lifers and mocking the Bible. According to Yahoo.com, “President Joe Biden on Tuesday tore into Donald Trump for his role in getting abortion rights overturned … referring to the Supreme Court case that overturned Roe v. Wade. ‘Maybe it’s coming from that Bible he’s trying to sell,’ Biden said as the crowd laughed...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|May 22, 2024

There was a wedding ceremony last Saturday. And while the days of being a participant are well and gone for me, I was still caught off guard when my loving wife began to present her list of things I needed to do leading up to it. “Get a haircut.” Now, being told on Saturday that I needed a haircut before the following Saturday seemed like a relatively easy task. But when I still hadn’t done it by Tuesday, I could tell she was getting a little flustered. She never said anything, but … trust m...

  • Panthers Win Erie Sectional

    May 22, 2024

Every year it seemed that the Lena-Winslow Panthers and Forreston Cardinals would battle in the Sectional for the right to advance on to the State finals. But, for the first time in a long time, the IHSA got something right by separating the two area powers – sending them to different Sectional meets – and opening the door for the Panthers to dominate the field in claiming the Erie Sectional Crown. Final team scores for the Erie Sectional were: 1. Lena-Winslow 108 2. Morrison 90.5 3. Man...

  • Painful Way To Win

    Dan Stevens|May 22, 2024

Before going into their Regional championship game against Rockford Lutheran, Panther head coach, Nick Werhane, gave a brief scouting report on what he hoped to see. "Well, I know their starting pitcher is a little erratic," he explained. "So we're going to try and see a lot of pitches, crowd the plate, make him work, and hopefully we'll be able to get him out of the game early." By the second inning, Werhane needed to apply for prophet status. The Panthers loaded the bases in the bottom of the...

  • Memorial Day Safety Reminder

    May 22, 2024

Summer is just around the corner, and while travel plans may vary, one thing remains constant: the need to wear your seat belt. With this in mind, the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office today announced that now through Memorial Day weekend it is stepping up enforcement efforts to remind motorists to “Click It or Ticket.” “Whether you’re driving around the corner or across the nation, remember to buckle up every time,” said Sheriff Steve Stovall. “The ‘Click It or Ticket’ effort is about preserving lives. We want seat belt use to be second natu...

  • Lighter Side

    May 22, 2024

I went to find some camouflage trousers toady, but I didn’t see any. Someone who is truly talented, and worthy of immense praise, is the person who can go to Target and ONLY get what they went there to get. What if Soy Milk is just regular milk introducing itself in Spanish? I think it might be time to stop shopping online when my computer asks me if I need another shopping cart. It’s hard to call it a ‘smart watch’ when I feel stupid for buying it. Well son, back in 2013, we used to have these big buildings called malls – where they would dis...

  • Freeport Council Frustration Hits A New Peek

    Dan Stevens|May 22, 2024

Apparently, I am not the only one completely frustrated by the lack of preparation by some members of the Freeport City Council, as tempers flared, accusations were openly stated, and it all culminated with the dropping of an exasperated f-bomb directed at Larry Sanders. (And, no, the 'F' did not stand for Freeport) At last week's Committee of the Whole meeting, there was a presentation made by Maguire – a consulting firm, that had been arranged by Mayor Miller and City Manager Boyer. "I had a...

  • Clutch Broncos Deliver Again

    Dan Stevens|May 22, 2024

For the second year in a row, the Orangeville Broncos took on the Lena-Winslow Panthers in the Regional championship - this time at their own house. And while there were differences to both contests, for the second year in a row the Broncos squeaked out a one run victory to claim the title. But this year, was different. In 2023, down in Lanark, the Broncos had to hold on and fight off a late Panther rally to claim the win. But last Friday it was the Panthers who were in control most of the...

  • From The Desk Down State

    Andrew Chesney|May 22, 2024

Those of us who grew up in stable homes with solid role models are very fortunate. While most of us probably did not know or appreciate it at the time, we were taught from an early age the difference between right and wrong, the proper way to treat people, respect toward others, and the importance of telling the truth and obeying the law. We were told that school was important, homework was to be done, and curfews were to be met. We had siblings that looked out for us. When we broke the rules, o...
