  • Federal Judge Rules Against Lena Church

    Capital News Network|May 13, 2020

A federal judge in Illinois ruled Sunday that Gov. JB Pritzker's stay-at-home order is constitutional, even though it interferes with people's right to gather in large numbers for worship services. In a decision that came just three days after the complaint was filed, U.S. District Judge John Z. Lee acknowledged that the freedom of religion is a "foundational" right and that the order does, in fact, interfere with the free exercise of that right. "But even the foundational rights secured by the...

  • Cause & Effect Economy

    Dan Stevens|May 13, 2020

As a kid, we all played the game where you lined dominos up in a wide arrangement – taking hours to weave across the floor in a massive pattern – only to enjoy the few seconds of enjoyment as you toppled the first one over and watched as the rapid escalation of each one pushing the next down spread across the floor. Unfortunately, that childhood scenario is the best way to explain what is taking place with our local economy. While most people are well aware of what problems repeatedly tor...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|May 13, 2020

“First Pray Then Speak Then Play” I told my wife how thankful I was to have someone I enjoyed being quarantined with. She said, “Must be nice.” Psalm 119:11 says: “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against Thee.” Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need divine intervention? Nehemiah found himself there once. He was put on the spot by an unbelieving king. He wrote: “The king said to me, ‘What is it you want?’ Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|May 13, 2020

OK, I’m facing a dilemma – and need to turn to the sage advice of men who have been married longer than I have. Now, anybody taking one look at me would immediately know – I like food. And my wife is an excellent cook – her Jambalaya is to die for, and don’t even get me started on her baking skills … “peanut butter balls … enough said.” Anyway, when life was “normal” I rarely ate at home during the week. Lunch would be done somewhere – typically with someone – working on a story, or enjoying m...

  • Our Favorite Musicals

    Dan Stevens|May 13, 2020

Similar to the Best Athlete survey we did with a Google Form, we had a survey out to find which musicals that each school produced over the last ten years qualified as your favorites. And, while we didn't get nearly as many responses for the musicals as we did for the athletics – 584 votes still qualifies as a legitimate response. So, what follows are the final votes for each school, and then – just because – I decided to give you my votes. Partly because I could, but also because – like most of...

Although they saw their "dance" canceled due to the pandemic, the couples from Aquin - who were already famous for their annual "prom draw", took on a whole new definition of charitable service as they paired up to perform community service on the weekend they would have been ... dancing. • The Lighter Side

    May 13, 2020

Home Schooling Update – My child just said they hope they don't have the same teacher next year. Remember when we were little and had underwear with the days of the week on them? Yeah, that might be helpful right now. Fact – In four weeks 88% of all blondes disappeared from the earth. The Powerball is up to an 18 pack of Charmin. Who would have ever guessed we'd see the day where a roll of toilet paper is more expensive than a gallon of gas. No hair salons, nail salons or tanning beds ... some of you guys are about to meet your girlfriends for...

  • State Rep's Report

    Andrew Chesney|May 13, 2020

When the Governor unveiled his Restore Illinois Plan on May 5th, I was, at first, optimistic. From a 30,000-foot view, the plan was regional with phases of re-opening the state for business so we can begin the critical economic recovery in Illinois. However, as they say, the devil is in the details. As I read and reviewed the plan intently over the coming hours, I quickly saw that there are many unworkable elements of the Governor’s plan. Let me start by dispelling a common notion— “Do your jo...

  • Looking Back - First Year A Fun One For Bulldogs

    Dan Stevens|May 13, 2020

Thirty or so years ago the Aquin bulldogs used to have a girl's softball team. But that was thirty years ago. This season marks the return of that program, and with first year coach Rose Mary (Romy) Brubaker at the helm, it has been a season of introductions mixed with success. Pearl City has had a softball team every season over that thirty year span, but last week's contest against Aquin will probably not go down as one of their favorite memories. Behind the steady pitching of Lizzy Hauser,...

  • Cory Called It

    Dan Stevens|May 13, 2020

At the NHS Induction ceremony last week, Seth Cory asked whether or not the paper would be covering the Panther's big game with Eastland later in the week. "We're going to win," he said with confidence. The statement was not a light one – over the past three years, Lena-Winslow has done well in baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball – but the one school they always lost to – the one that always won the title while the Panthers were forced to settle for second, was Eastland. To knock...
