  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|May 10, 2023

We live in a world of instant everything. Russian immigrant and comedian Yakov Smirnoff said the first time he went grocery shopping in America he saw powdered milk, powdered eggs, powdered potatoes and even powdered cheddar cheese. As he took all this in he was just amazed. His translator said: “All you have to do is add water.” Then they went down the baby aisle and he picked up a container of baby powder - all he could say was: “Wow! What a country!” We're used to instant. We don’t like wait...

I didn’t realize so many people never knew the story of how the Voices got started – and really liked being able to connect the dots with what facts they did know from the history of newspapers in our region. But, it sparked a lot of questions in regard to why I thought so many newspapers were failing, what I thought made the Voices successful, and my reaction to some of the bashing I often get on social medias – So, let’s get t...

  • Lighter Side

    May 10, 2023

It’s not easy being a mom. If it were, Dad would do it. Today we honor cooks, nurses, chauffeurs, counselors, teachers, maids and referees … in other words – moms. A good mother loves her kids. A great mother still loves them when they’re teenagers. Remember, your children should always be your inspiration … even if it is only to drink more. Mommy has a headache, so you kids go play in traffic. It’s not easy being a mother these days … Texting in all caps just doesn’t have the same impact as good, old-fashioned YELLING! Mother’s Day sh...

It certainly feels like spring and that means farmers are planting or preparing to plant. Farmers are masters of adjusting. They often adjust plans on the farm because of weather, equipment breakdowns and even the occasional loose animal. Farmers remind us to be flexible and to adjust as needed. With planting season upon us farmers will begin to plant, meaning there will be more equipment on the roadways while moving from field to field.
