I want to apologize for this week's paper. Throughout this entire Stay at Home Corona situation, we have been trying to avoid simply using Illinois Press Association Covid releases to fill our pages. And I won't lie, when I kept getting emails and phone calls complimenting us on what we've been able to put together, it made me proud. But this week, as you can undoubtedly see, we are not on our game. Admittedly, I'm making a prediction right now because well ... you see ... I'm writing this to yo...
I’m gonna ask my mother if that offer to slap me into next year is still on the table. Until further notice, the days of the week are now called, “Thisday, Thatday, Otherday, Someday, Yesterday, Today and Nextday.” This quarantine made me realize that I have no real hobbies other than going out to eat and spending money. If you thought the toilet paper thing was crazy, just wait until 300 million people all want a haircut appointment. Yesterday, my husband thought he saw a cockroach in the kitchen. He sprayed everything down and cleaned thoro...
We are all in this together! The Jo Daviess Conservation Foundation (JDCF) is taking COVID-19 very seriously. This week, we are featuring a scavenger hunt at our Horseshoe Mound Preserve, 1679 N Blackjack Rd, Galena. Please practice social distancing while taking the kids in search of the 5 clues on this hunt. A numbered tree cookie will mark the correct spot for each clue...
Sometimes, someone unexpected comes into your life out of nowhere, makes your heart race, and changes you forever. We call those people cops. There’s a story out there that says the following letter was sent to President Andrew Jackson from New York State Governor Martin Van Buren. January 31, 1829 Dear President Jackson: The canal system of this country is being threatened by the spread of a new form of transportation known as ‘railroads.’ The federal government must preserve the canals for t...
By now, if you read our front page, you know I have been spending my week stuck here in a Rockford hospital room. Now, nobody enjoys being in the hospital. The bed is too short for me, so they put on an extender – but when you have all kinds of wires and IV lines sticking on and into you – try rolling over in bed and see how many alarms go off. (Yeah, deep sleep here …) Apologize for the mental image, but sitting in your underwear with a loose back tied hospital gown on also leaves a lot to be...
The Greater Freeport Partnership launched its Partnership Cash program on Friday, April 24 at 7 pm and the program exceeded $10,000 sales of all grant funded purchases before noon on Saturday, April 25, 2020. After just one Facebook Live program introduction, Stephenson County residents pushed the post viral to help promote the program and increase support of small business in the area. Just 18 hours later, the program met its maximum investment allotment of $10,000. The $10,000 investment from...

The vehicle struck a small tree and fence, c...
Over the past month, I have put Northwest Illinois Values on the forefront as we discuss our regional response to the COVID-19 pandemic. I have helped share stories of neighbors helping neighbors, businesses retooling their production lines to produce life-saving Personal Protective Equipment, encouraged opportunities to get involved and updated my COVID-19 website constantly with the latest information and resources for constituents, many of whom are suffering greatly because of the economic...

The Salvation Army continues to adjust services collaborating with other local organizations, understanding and feeling the effects of the ever-growing food insecurity in our community. Unfortunately, the social distancing has distanced even more of our community from the funds needed to continue to provide for the unforeseen needs during this crisis. Although the offices are closed to the public, the Corps continues to provide meals and emergency pantry orders daily Monday thru Friday from...
