Everything started with the Consent Agenda – which is typically the least controversial element of any meeting – but the motion was made to pull out the Nursing Home Payables of $219,719.09 and make them go to the Finance Committee for payment when funds become available as prioritized by t...

  • Preacher's Piece

    Kevin Cernak|Apr 26, 2023

I subscribe to a magazine called The Progressive Farmer. On the last page of each edition the editor prints a bunch of quotes from people, mostly of whom I’ve never heard of, but some of them are famous people from the past or present. The following quote by self-proclaimed radical atheist Douglas Adams (1952-2001) caught my attention. He said: “I’ve come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies: 1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary a...

  • Point To Ponder

    Dan Stevens|Apr 26, 2023

Please excuse my tone of voice, but I am really getting tired of suffering fools. Now, I would be the first one to admit that the current structure of our County Board and School Board meetings is warranted – in particular – it is extremely important to allow the public a forum where they can comment publicly to their elected officials, even if it is limited to three minutes. But after sitting through the public comment at last week’s County Board meeting … I can’t help but wonder if there is...

  • Lighter Side

    Apr 26, 2023

I miss being able to slam my phone down when I hang up on somebody. Violently pressing “end call” just doesn’t do it for me. I think my phone is broken. I pressed the home button, but I’m still at work. I left my phone under my pillow last night and when I woke up it was gone and there was a dollar coin there. I think it was the Bluetooth fairy. Is it true that the security phones that work at Samsung are called the Guardians of the Galaxy? Do you mind if I strap your phone to my forehead so I can pretend you’re looking at me when I talk? No,...

    Dan Stevens|Apr 26, 2023

Students involved in Servant Leadership from 13 area High Schools all congregated inside the Freeport High school cafeteria for one special purpose recently – trying to help feed the World's hungry. "Servant Leadership partnered with Kids Around The World," said organizer Dan Dick. "The goal today is to pack and ship 55,000 meals." Each meal costs 27 cents, and those funds were raised by the students over the course of the year. A meal consisted of rice, lentils, dried vegetables and v...

  • Correction

    Dan Stevens|Apr 26, 2023

In last week’s Village Voices a photo that had been submitted to us in regard to what the photographer believed was a “crop fire that got out of hand,” was printed within our pages. The date and time of the fire were verified, and a call to 911 reporting it was also confirmed, as was the fact that a red flag warning had been issued. However, a text came in from the Lena Fire Chief, saying the information was wrong. Although a return text and phone calls were both made to ask him what was in erro...
